Well, here it is. My ranking of RUSH's full 165-song studio catalog. In preparation I re-visited every album, at least in part, rating each song it contained and giving a longer listen to the songs I traditionally have liked the least in order to give them a fair shake. Some songs climbed the ranking as a result. I also spent a fair amount of time watching YouTube vids like this of groups of RUSH fans ranking their favorite and least-liked albums. I found those discussions interesting, and a common theme seemed to be that one's rankings of albums and the songs within them often depends on when and how a person became a fan. In that spirit, I'll share my love-of-RUSH history as my list unfolds. I'll gladly start with a song I absolutely hated upon hearing its first note. How the band I had grown to love could put out something this dismal baffled me. The keyboard playing was absolute shit. The lyrics were trite. The guitar work was banal. And it was so stupidly short I couldn't imagine why it was even included on the album - an album with such a great title, such amazing artwork. Re-visiting it for the ranking process has confirmed one thing: This song is a crime against prog-rock humanity. 165. Madrigal6 points

Just popping in to say hi from way back. Things are shitty what with Ukraine and Palestine but aside from that, hanging in there. I do miss old rush forum and friends from there. Also I’m not so negative and that comes from time and therapy. Any older trf peeps—hi 👋 tree duck, trout man and Jack Aubrey, sulky sue, 1001 and Michelle come to mind instantly…life is weird and I’ve let go of a lot of shit. Hoping this finds you all well 🩷 Well whatever… miss you all.2 points

I have Color of Right at #152. I like the line "You're so full of what is right, you can't see what is true," but the rest of the lyrics aren't hitting me in any way, and musically it's pretty mundane. It's a song that gets skipped 99 times out of 100.2 points

Cool, another list. No argument from me on these bottom three. Good examples of Rush being very non-Rush-like.2 points

It took the usual TRF turn. The Chronicles of Narnia is already mentioned. I read it many times as a tween and immersed deeply in it. Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials might be more appealing to teens, but it's worth keeping in mind for the near future. I remember enjoying Robert C. O'Brien's Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Oh boy, it was a thrill! I think I will have to find it in the vaults of our library.2 points

On "Youtube", I've watched some videos from "Sea of Tranquility", and what I've seen, I like them. How much I like "A Farewell to Kings" c.d., and album, "Madrigal", is bottom four as the worst on my list.2 points

I'll bet the extended re-listen was difficult for you, and I thank you for giving up your time in sacrifice to keeping these rankings going. I'll bet the rewards of discovering the positives you missed were greater than the pain of revisiting Madrigal, though, right?2 points

Dear Headline Writer(s), I don’t “need” to know any of this. I don’t want to know about any of this. I don’t care about any of this. The information regarding sign-stealing by the University of Michigan football team is not essential to my existence, my well-being or my happiness. You headline writers insist on irritating me with the redundant headlines What to know…Here’s what to know…Here’s what we know…What you need to know, etc. I’m starting to think that your headlines are written not by human beings but by computer programs, which people mistake for “AI”. Stop doing it.2 points

Rolling Stone published its original list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists in 2011. It was compiled by a panel of musicians, mostly older classic rockers. Our new expanded list was made by the editors and writers of Rolling Stone. This one goes to 250. Our guy made position 58. Rick Beato is unimpressed. https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/rick_beato_slams_rolling_stones_idiotic_top_250_guitarists_of_all_time_list_this_is_so_embarrassingly_bad.html1 point

Idk if I'd call that one the worst, but it's definitely bad (on a much overrated album too if you ask me).1 point

I thought I would do this. When the usernames "LaughedAtByTime", and "Mosher" were posting theirs, and with "Hi_Water" that has been ongoing, I didn't want to start it at the same time, and during "LaughedAtByTime", and "Mosher", and right now, don't know about "Hi_Water" getting to finish, and complete posting his. I know the "Administrator" has started, and finished figuring out how many, and the positions, where he wanted Rush songs on his own list, and going to post his. I didn't include studio unreleased, non-album singles, live, cover, and semi-official/RoIO releases, and songs. Instead of other people, and individuals saying a lot of different comments, I would like to see more of them try starting to do, and post their own finished, and completed Rush song's list, too. I'm expecting different, and a variety of comments. At one time, mine could be a couple, or a few songs, but will depend, and vary. It will be the song, song # on the c.d., and album, my entry # on the c.d., and album, and the title of the c.d., and album. Since I wasn't going to include Rush's cover's c.d., and album "Feedback" in the list, I did a separate my entry list of it. From somewhere, the list has to start, so mine is at number 165. Here is the start of it. "Feedback" the Seeker, song #4 Shapes of Things, song #7 Heart Full of Soul, song #2 Mr. Soul, song #5 For What It's Worth, song #3 Seven and Seven Is, song #6 Summertime Blues, song #1 Crossroads, song #8 Tai Shan, song #9/10, "Hold Your Fire (1987)" Neurotica, song #9/10, "Roll the Bones (1991)" 164. Tai Shan, song #9/10 - my entry #10/10, "Hold Your Fire (1987)" 165. Neurotica, song #9/10 - my entry #10/10, "Roll the Bones (1991)"1 point

It does seem a bit harsh to say the least. I was speaking to a couple of drummer friends of mine this evening - both are well pissed off as they reckon that Mangini is technically a much better player than Portnoy. I can't really comment as I don't play drums myself.1 point

I listened to scenes from a memory once sometime around 1999. That’s my full exposure. Carry on1 point

and EP it's rubs methe absolute wrong way how quick they threw mangini out after MP's the one who peace'd out after a hissy fit. AND BTW just so you guys know if a new mike portnoy DT is amazing i will say so. if i don't like it though....hoo boy, lol you think i'm brutal on CA. Mick1 point

I feel a bit sorry for Mangini, I really liked his work with DT ...... but ...... Mikey boy returning to the fold is a big deal! However now that he is back on board, I assume he will cut down his work with the ten million other bands he has been involved with!!1 point

I'm not surprised that RS didn't include certain players that only guitar players have heard of. I'm betting none of those editors and writers have ever heard of Guthrie Govan or Allan Holdsworth. But they did include Joan Jett. Yes, Joan f**king Jett, all the way up at #76, is ranked higher than Wes Montgomery and Larry Carlton. That tells us the real deal -- this is not a list of the most talented guitar players ever. That is not what RS does. Their interest in covering music is more about how culturally significant they think a band or player is. That said, do I still think this list is shit? Absolutely, and Rick Beato very efficiently outlined why. If RS' aim is to list the top 250 culturally significant guitarists of all time, the fact that they didn't include Peter Frampton -- who has both talent and cultural significance -- makes the list null and void all by itself.1 point
