I thought of this before, and after a search, didn't think there was a topic thread of it. If many people would want to do this, I don't, and didn't know. Pick as many songs from "Presto", "Roll the Bones", "Counterparts", and "Test For Echo" to equal, and total ten-sixteen. It can include bonus songs, too. Here is mine.

I like all of these albums, so my twelve well be songs I think are great.

 

I have never cared about song order on an album, the pacing of an album has never mattered to me.

I like doing things in vinyl/cassette sides if that's alright, but I also like bonus tracks

 

Side A

1. Show Don't Tell (the most opener-y of the four openers here)

2. Stick It Out (heavy stuff goes on track two cliche, check)

3. Bravado (midtempo ballad goes on track three, check)

4. The Color Of Right (mid tempo rocker follows ballad, check)

5. Cold Fire (get back to rocking out after a couple mid tempo numbers)

6. Where's My Thing? (close side one with an instrumental to make vocals sound fresh again on side 2)

 

Side B

1. Alien Shore (the best "side two opener" of these four very CD oriented albums)

2. Driven (just a great track two in every way, honestly you could switch this around with Stick It Out and it wouldn't make much difference)

3. Nobody's Hero (again, mid tempo ballad goes to track 3)

4. Presto (and midtempo ballad is followed by mid tempo rocker for track 4)

5. Time And Motion (which is followed with a heavier rocker, but this time one with some real weight and urgency because we're nearing the end and we need to build tension for...)

6. Available Light (not only the best closer of the four records but also a really cathartic minor key anthem the feeds off of its finality, and my favorite song on Presto)

 

Bonus track!

Roll The Bones (catchy, upbeat, but also oddly serious in lyrical tone until the wacky rap comes in, doesn't sit nicely in a tracklist filled with rockers and a couple ballads but hard to leave out of the discussion for being so unique and so oddly good, so bonus track it is).

Yes, I like Counterparts as it shows from the song collection.

The other albums I find a bit mediocre from Rush but all having some standout tracks that I really like.

 

There were a number of other borderline tracks like maybe Test For Echo, Show Don't Tell and Bravado. Maybe others but the fact that I'm not sure of which ones says it all.

 

Personally, I love Ghost of a Chance and Superconductor and I don't know why these tracks aren't giving more love but maybe it's just me and my dodgy preferences!

I know Ghost of a Chance was on one of the live DVDs as a bonus track so it obviously was considered a reasonable track by the band.

I get the feeling I'm the only one in the world who likes Neurotica. I find the rest of the album full of good ideas that weren't quite implemented fully or polished enough.

And I find the track roll the bones very bland and don't know why it's given as much 'love' (well, liked) as it is - because it's the title track maybe?

 

But i thought Counterparts was a bit of a return to form.

 

And anyway, as the famous (in the UK) football manager, Brian Clough, said when dealing with disputes with his players:-

paraphrased "We can talk about it for twenty minutes and then we will decide that I am right."!!

These are all my favorites from this period. I had to leave some songs off that I hated too (Alien Shore, Chain Lighting, Test For Echo, Where's My Thing, War Paint). But I wanted to get a good representation from every record in the period. Driven and Totem are to me outstanding Rush songs on an album that was not looked upon highly from some. But they had to make the cut. I took the best 3 tunes from Roll The Bones (leaving off the title track which I love too so I can have the 4 stand outs from Presto which to me are truly awesome songs). Counterparts is well represented IMO here with three powerhouse tunes. Just missing the cut were Double Agent, Everyday Glory (I hated leaving that one off big time but again I tried to make a balanced album here) and the awesome Alien Shore.
