You guys have probably all seen this, but basically, Geddy Lee almost was the one to produce Metallica's third album, Master Of Puppets in 1986 while the band was on tour promoting Power Windows....Sadly, 1986 was the same year where tragically, Cliff Burton lost his life in the bus crash...This leads me to ask a very interesting question...What if Metallica was never introduced to Jason Newsted and instead, decided to recruit none other than Geddy Lee to take Cliff's place?

For starters, they probably would have not been satisfied with the poppy and twangy sound of the Wal bass that he was playing at that time and probably would have made him play the Rickenbacker or the Jazz bass. I honestly would not be able to imagine One being played with a bass tone that was similar to the Wal.

Geddy would have declined, and if he hadn't everyone in both bands would soon have regretted it.

Never would have happened. :rush: we're still peaking evolving away from anything Metallica was at that time. If anything :rush: was loosing some early fans to Metallica.

I could imagine Geddy producing an album but not recruited to join the band.

I can't imagine Geddy being able to put up with what was Alcoholica in those days . . . .

Bingo. He may have had squabbles with Al and Neil but that would have been nothing compared to the mental issues from the remaining Metalica members. I actually don't think Geddy would have been a good producer for them. He was just too far removed from metal at the time.

You know what, I agree. If Geddy had become the official bassist for Metallica, he would have always been the odd one out.

Would never have happened. There was no reason for Geddy to leave his very successful, probably well paying gig to join Metallica. At the time Metallica was getting popular but they hadn't made it huge yet. They probably weren't even making that much money yet back in 1987. Geddy would have had zero reason to join them.

Let's not forget the musical differences as well. They would have never gelled together as a band. No one involved would have benefited from it.

In this issue of Guitar Player magazine Geddy Lee discusses leaving the Hold Your Fire recording sessions to join up and coming Thrash Metal band Metallica.

I don't think Geddy would have put up with Lars and James' rule of not straying away from Metallica at any time for other projects. I believe for G, that would haven been an immature suggestion at best and would have absolutely declined. I am glad however, that the Metalligents, as human beings, have each matured in their own way.

Obviously he would have had to change his look :) Probably something more reminiscent of Signals, but with more of an edgy look.

Obviously this would never have happened, but an interesting hypothetical.

Since Geddy was still really into synths, I imagine AJFA would have been filled with moody synth bits, perhaps a Hawkwind but heavier feel. He would not have allowed the disappearance of bass that mired AJFA, which Newsted rightly objected to but nevertheless had to accept. Metallica would have been better in the 90's than what they were in my opinion, and obviously Rush would have been worse. Geddy would have been a major writer musically and that would have altered everything Metallica did in the 90's.

On the matter of Master of Puppets, I am so glad Geddy never produced.

No matter what happened to Metallica, Master will always be an album I love start to finish, so Metallica made the right choice.

Would never have happened because James & Lars were looking for someone that would fit INTO Metallica. No way would they have gotten Geddy for THEIR band despite what they had said in past interviews about wanting a bassist who could add to the Metallica sound. At that period in their lives, Geddy in Metallica would've been like a pro tennis player on a rugby team

Metallica 1987-now still have to make an album of the same level of Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets and I'm afraid that even Geddy (at that point, the 'new boy')wouldn't have been a power strong enough to put the band back to the proper path.
