fraroc Posted September 27, 2016 Share Posted September 27, 2016 http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/rushs-geddy-lee-says-he-almost-produced-metallicas-master-of-puppets-album/ You guys have probably all seen this, but basically, Geddy Lee almost was the one to produce Metallica's third album, Master Of Puppets in 1986 while the band was on tour promoting Power Windows....Sadly, 1986 was the same year where tragically, Cliff Burton lost his life in the bus crash...This leads me to ask a very interesting question...What if Metallica was never introduced to Jason Newsted and instead, decided to recruit none other than Geddy Lee to take Cliff's place? For starters, they probably would have not been satisfied with the poppy and twangy sound of the Wal bass that he was playing at that time and probably would have made him play the Rickenbacker or the Jazz bass. If anything :rush: was loosing some early fans to Metallica. He may have had squabbles with Al and Neil but that would have been nothing compared to the mental issues from the remaining Metalica members. I actually don't think Geddy would have been a good producer for them. He was just too far removed from metal at the time. J2112YYZ Posted September 27, 2016 Share Posted September 27, 2016 Would never have happened. There was no reason for Geddy to leave his very successful, probably well paying gig to join Metallica. At the time Metallica was getting popular but they hadn't made it huge yet. They probably weren't even making that much money yet back in 1987. Geddy would have had zero reason to join them. Let's not forget the musical differences as well. They would have never gelled together as a band. No one involved would have benefited from it. I believe for G, that would haven been an immature suggestion at best and would have absolutely declined. Since Geddy was still really into synths, I imagine AJFA would have been filled with moody synth bits, perhaps a Hawkwind but heavier feel. He would not have allowed the disappearance of bass that mired AJFA, which Newsted rightly objected to but nevertheless had to accept. Metallica would have been better in the 90's than what they were in my opinion, and obviously Rush would have been worse. Geddy would have been a major writer musically and that would have altered everything Metallica did in the 90's. On the matter of Master of Puppets, I am so glad Geddy never produced. No matter what happened to Metallica, Master will always be an album I love start to finish, so Metallica made the right choice. 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

No way would they have gotten Geddy for THEIR band despite what they had said in past interviews about wanting a bassist who could add to the Metallica sound.
