Legendary DEEP PURPLE and RAINBOW guitarist Ritchie Blackmore has paid tribute to Eddie Van Halen, who passed away on Tuesday (October 6) at the age of 65.

Blackmore said in a statement: "Eddie Van Halen was a brilliant guitarist who started a technique of guitar playing which was emulated by a whole generation of guitarists. He was one of the nicest musicians I ever met in the music business. Very shy and not at all conceited about his ability as a guitar player.

"Frank Zappa said [Eddie] reinvented the guitar. I agree.

"He will be sadly missed but his brilliant legacy will always be remembered. The ultimate guitar hero."

Quite something from Blackmore.... not always forthcoming with praise. To me that really says it all about EVH! Edited by zepphead

What did Dave say?

EDIT: Never mind. I see all he said was something about a long trip.

I won't say what I'm thinking

It wasn't exactly a glowing tribute ...... considering the legacy of what EVH has left, he needs to say more.

I was reading this old Guitar World interview from 1996 that Billy Corgan did with Eddie Van Halen here.

Below is the part that stands out.

One of the things that struck me after listening to all your albums is your fearlessness -- you've never been afraid to go where you've wanted to go. You 've played blues, you've played crazy music, you've played synthesizer music…

I think my desire to do my own thing came from my dad. He was a real soulful guy. He played sax and clarinet like a motherf**ker. Unfortunately, he was also an alcoholic who died when he was 66. But he lived a full life. My mom, on the other hand, is 80, but she doesn't live. So I'm trying to find a balance between them. I don't want to be like my mom and live to be 80, and not live. And I don't want to die at 66 like my dad.

Justified because Deadpool was right about Fred Durst. He killed the golden era of 90s alt rock especially with Woodstock 99 so screw him.

Durst is part of the equation why real rock and roll is dead!!!!

Durst is the worst!

I am so happy and lucky that I am 52 years young!!!

I like many of you are the luckiest humans on the Earth!!!

Well I feel sorry for the idiots and tools that love bands like Nickelback, Green Day, Creed, Bush, stinking park, Puddle Of Mud, Godsmack, on and on and on and on!!

It doesn’t matter anymore to my insane brain I’m the membrane!! Lol!!!

Rock And Roll will never die!!!!

Thanks to the past!!!!

You people love Regretta Van Fleet???

Kills my soul daily.

It’s just me.

You want to listen to that crap go for it!!

The music I love and grew up with is coming to an end.

I try to love something current.

I can’t.

I love Coheed & Cambria!!

Even Pat thinks they are EMO.

Fuckk that shit. You are wrong Pat.

You rarely are wrong.

I’ve met Claudio. Loves Rush.

Heavy influence.

At least Claudio plays a white double neck like Alex on the song Welcome Home.

It is what it is.

I’m trying to reach tonight.

We can argue all night long until we are blue in the face or get a warning from 73 to cool it.

Eddie Van Halen IS the greatest guitar player on the Earth!!!!!

DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol!!

Please scroll back 14 years and look at my archive.

It has been written Fools!

I love using 73’s Forum to write all of my happiness and pain out of my body!!

Don’t judge me!!

Look in the mirror of yourself!!!!

We are all immortal for a limited time!

Embrace the sadness. Absorb the pain.

When sunlight finds your stomach, enjoy the rain.

You people hate the Rush song “Face Up.”

Better to be Face Up than Face Down!!!

I know the world is hurting.

Not just with our musical heroes passing away.

This is one of the worst years in human history.

You who read this are lucky.

Stay healthy.

Wear your mask.

Flu season is coming.

There are silver linings in this existence.

Take it from me!!

I’m so crazy and sooooo insane!!

I’m soooooo drugged up and wasted!!! Def Leppard

I have fallen in love during this chaos.

This sadness!!!

This pandemic!!

Losing Neil and now Eddie!!

My two favorite musicians and mentors are gone!!

Do you know how I put this in perspective???

My mom and dad are still alive!!

I cherish them.

I love them unconditionally.

Again, my dad has seen Van Halen with me!!

Four times!! Or more!!!

He’s sad!!!!!!

Live for you!

Take care of your family!!

Life is short!!!!

This is my “Fair Warning” to you all!!!!

Best album on the planet next to “Hemispheres!!”

The ones who know me get me.

I’m over the top.

Yet consistent.

Do the research.

Run the numbers.

If you don’t like my opinion

Then suck on some cucumbers!!

If you like hard lumber instead

Then read Shakespeare and drift into

A midnight slumber.

Eddie and Neil are gone.

But as Dream Theater kind of says,

“Their Spirit Carries On.”

I can rhyme al night and drive you all crazy.

Why are California skies always orange and hazy?

Some of you hate “Hold Your Fire”

Everybody Wants Some!

I mean you prefer “On Fire.”

It’s ok.

You have your own brain.

I bet some of you think I’m totally insane!!

Tora Tora!!!

It is what it is!!

Everything is about the fuckingg money!!!

Mutherfukker, I wish I made millions in the music biz!!!

I love you Neil!!

Love you Edward!!!!!

Thank you 73 for letting me be me!!!

Rock will never die because I’m “ALIVE!”

KISS me!!!!

Get it?

Prog nerds!!!!!

VAN HALEN RULES!!!

You can have your pansy ass pop Sam Halen Slop!

Did you know that Edward L. Van Halen (yep, that’s Eddie Van Halen!!) has a US Patent No. US 4,656,917? It was filed on 30 July 1985 and is titled “Musical Instrument Support”.

I've been to several music forums in the past 2 days including VH Links. I have posting access there, but I'm just too exhausted to start online friendships with anyone new at this point in my life. It's just funny to see all these people competing to see who was the biggest VH fan and who had the strongest connection to the band. Some of them act like they knew Eddie personally. One fellow wouldn't stop bragging about his signature EVH guitar. I guess this happens when most celebrities die.

When I first heard that Eddie passed, I actually thought of Rod.

The poor guy will never get his interview now-- unless he conducts a seance.

He was out of my league...but in the back of my mind, I always thought maybe one day it would happen. My favorite guitar player of all time, and I was never able to see him live. I was 8 years old when he played in Brazil, and when I moved to Canada in 2017 Van Halen wasn't touting anymore. I hope now they release more live material, and that Wolfie gets on 5150 and manages to curate the best of his demos to show it to the public in some way.

At least you got to see them in Brazil. I can't imagine them touring ever again without Eddie. That would be like U2 without Bono.

I didn't see them then...I was only 8. One of my cousins went and stayed near Eddie's amp. He was deaf for a week or so!!!!

Here's an AMAZING interview he did quite recently. It was the last time we'd see him in good health:

I'll say it anyway,

Knowing Dave, he's probably thinking There goes my meal ticket

This is an old interview so it's not up to date but I think it works as a fitting tribute (Eddie Wank is on it though so hold your nose).

Fitting since EVH played on Beat It and Nuno played additional rhythm guitar in the music video version of Black Cat by Janet.

Ray Danniels also managed both Van Halen and Extreme (noted here) besides RUSH.

This is probably how Gary Cherone got the gig with Van Halen.

Mitch Malloy of Great White also auditioned to be the singer of Van Halen after Sammy Hagar's departure.
