  2. I was always surprised "Cut to the Chase" never got more attention. Would have done well as a single and would have killed live.

  3. I think the section of NS that starts at 5:09 could be part of Sir Gawain. It sounds like a completely different song from NS.

  4. From the book Rush Chronology https://www.amazon.c...x/dp/1926462033 Permanent Waves: "The Spirit Of Radio", "Freewill", "Uncle Tounouse" (Unreleased), and "Sir Gawain And The Green Knight" (Unreleased) were finished during July 1979, and demos were made of those songs, as well as unfinished versions of "Jacob's Ladder", and "Entre Nous". "Jacob's Ladder" and "Entre Nous" were finished during soundchecks in August 1979, while "Natural Science", and "Different Strings" were written in September 1979. The album was recorded from October-November 1979 Sir Gawain was recorded and finished by July 1979 It exists somewhere http://www.therushforum.com/index.php?/topic/102886-rush-writingrecording-sessions-guide/

  11. An unannounced “mystery band” performance at the Orbit Room on some random weekday even. A mere 20 minute or so performance before attendees could notify all via social media. Peart on a bare bones kit. Set list: 2112 Overture Headlong Flight The Spirit of Radio A medley of whatever with the remaining few minutes Blink and you miss it.

  12. You are exactly right. I don’t think anyone in this thread really cares about how much money he has. I also don’t think anyone in here actually wishes him financial ruin just to see another Rush gig.

  13. Another cool thing about Vapor Trails was that it featured part four of the Fear series, adding a final chapter to the Fear series with Freeze, focusing on the fight or flight response. It's another song I really like. I love Alex's guitar tone on this one and Geddy's bass rocks. I love Geddy's bass tone and playing style on Vapor Trails. This is the album he really started using more chords and playing them with that right-hand flamenco attack. But I could go on and on about this album because I think it is a work of art... The drums on Vapor Trails are unbelievable as well, and let's not forget Alex's riffs... Damn it, I love this album!

  15. As a guitar player, I have long felt that Alex would have been the last one who wanted the band to morph into what it did by the mid 80s But in reading some interviews and quotes from the Permanent Waves era, I just came across this - Alex talking about Permanent Waves and the direction "I was really bluesed out about the whole thing," Lifeson continued. "'Jacob's Ladder' seemed to be a typical Rush song, a rehash of something we'd done in the past. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/rush-permanent-waves-album/

  16. Sections of Natural Science were originally a side length piece titled Sir Gawain And The Green Knight ... I will try to find links, but I do remember reading that Sir Gawain was indeed recorded as a demo at the time of some of the other early Permanent Wave demos .. As time progressed, the band decided that another side length epic wasn;t fitting in to want that wanted to do , so they plucked sections of Sir Gawain and made the condensed Natural Science .. Somewhere, that demo still exists

  21. "Earthshines" doesn't seem to get a lot of love. Damn good song, damn good guitar solo thing. "Here Again" is another fine slab o' rock that is often overlooked (with a great slow-burn Lifeson solo). Maybe because it doesn't have windchimes and woodblocks on it. :( :P

  22. I’ve been saying it since the final show of R40… “Well, I guess that’s it.” Neil is retired and Rush as a band, is too. But, if the boys were someone how convinced to give their fans one last show, where should it be? No question, Toronto is the city, but the venue? Three obvious choices: One is the Rogers Centre (or whatever the hell they call it these days), the place could hold 60,000 which would easily sell out. Two, the Air Canada Centre, which is the hockey arena that holds about 15,000. Or, finally and for nostalgia sakes, how about Massey Hall? This legendary 3,000 seat theater has great acoustics for sound, but as most know, it’s where All The World’s A Stage was recorded back in 196. A full circle… So?

  23. Musing on a Saturday morning and wondering what would Permanent Waves have looked like if the boys had done a full side epic version of Natural Science. What track/tracks would have been sacrificed if any? I'm thinking Jacob's Ladder would be the track that would be dropped as brilliant as it is.

  24. CA is being called 's first concept album, but I heard in some interviews in the 80's the band say that most of their albums are built around thematic concepts. I am just wondering if someone can held elucidate all of the themes/concepts for me. I'll give it my best shot. 1. Rush --> young man's blues 2. Fly By Night --> basic fantasy (By-tor) 3. Caress of Steel --> High Fantasy () 4. 2112 --> kick-ass Science Fiction 5. A Farewell to Kings --> Fantasy Mash-up (historical, adventure, space) 6. Hemispheres --> Allegorical Fantasy 7. Permanent Waves --> Enduring Human Expressions (freewill, preserving relationships, environmentalism) 8. Moving Pictures --> Oxymorons (modern Tom Sawyer, LIVING in the limelight, counterproductive mob mentality) 9. Signals --> Clash of the Old and the New 10. Grace Under Pressure --> simply, people acting with Grace Under Pressure 11. Power Windows --> the views by which we see/experience power 12. Hold Your Fire --> NOT REALLY SURE 13. Presto --> Life 14. Roll the Bones --> the chances we take by being alive 15. Counterparts --> Relationships 16. Test for Echo --> Endurance 17. Vapor Trails --> Humility, Redemtion 18. Snakes and Arrows --> Harsh Realities 19. Clockwork Angels --> High Fantasy Let me know your opinions and correct me if I am wrong on any of these!

  25. Natural Science is epic! I remember quite well when I 1st heard it and the complete state of awe struck I was in. This song was the one that started me on my journey of being a life long :rush: fan. It was when I heard this song and said to meself "Man if there is a song like this on a :rush: album I have never heard on the radio, I wonder what kind of songs are on their other albums" From that point on the album collecting began. This all happened in the summer of 1980 as Permanent Waves was the very 1st :rush: album I went out and bought brand new from the record store. So P E although written & produced in the 70's is most assuredly an 80's album! Sorry I couldn't resist throwing that in there :D

  31. Rush No main theme. Basic rock-n-roll type lyrics. Fly By Night A combination of Ayn Rand's Objectivism and Tolkien-like fantasy. There is no real album theme, but being young, wanting to travel and finding meaning in life could be seen as a theme in some songs. Caress of Steel More Tolkien-like fantasy. Again, there's no real theme, but viewing life as an epic battle could maybe be considered a theme on this album. 2112 Ayn Rand's Objectivism combined with a futuristic dystopian science-fiction story. The main album themes are individualism, the power of creativity, and the dangers of collectivism. A Farewell to Kings Individualism and the dangers of collectivism. Hemispheres Finding a balance between the heart and the mind and/or between the left and right side of the brain. The dualism between logic and creativity in the human psyche. And again, more individualism and rejection of collectivism. Permanent Waves Artistic integrity, individuality, and modern technology versus nature. Moving Pictures Individuality, self-actualization, and modern society. Signals How people interact with each other, modern society, individualism, and exploration. Grace Under Pressure How to deal with fear, anxiety, and stress. Power Windows Power in all its different forms, both good and bad. The power of money, the power of technology, the power of art, the power of patriotism, the power of human emotions, the power of perseverance, the power of having dreams and goals... Hold Your Fire Instinct, human nature, and time. Presto Life in general. Struggling with depression and doubt. Dealing with life as an individual who does not believe in magic or religion. Accepting the difficulties of human existence and finding the beauty of life. Roll the Bones Taking your chances in life. Making choices and accepting the consequences. Constantly adapting to changes and having the courage to choose your own path. Not believing in a predestined fate. Counterparts Love and human relationships. Femininity and masculinity. Human emotions. The struggles of everyday people. Test For Echo Human interaction and communication. Dualism. Vapor Trails Dealing with loss. Finding hope again after facing adversity and tragedy. The beauty of life. Dealing with the darker side of things and not becoming bitter or defeated. Love. Snakes and Arrows Faith and religion. How religious beliefs can be dangerous. Atheism. Living in a dangerous world full of threat. Finding meaning in life and believing in hope and love without being religious. Clockwork Angels The journey of life. How one's personality and beliefs grow and change throughout life. Dealing with adversity. Atheism. The lessons to be learned in life.

  32. Scream 2 (8/10) Not quite as good as the first, although I love the villian reveal at the end and the cast are once again fantastic. I haven't seen this trilogy in around a decade, nd two films in I am a massive fan still! Can't wait to see the third as I remember really loving that one!

  33. Double feature Friday Two very different movies Up first is Akira Kurosawa's Dreams .... some of the most visually breathtaking and emotionally stirring movies ever have come from Japan .. And this is definitely not one of them .. Funded by Warner Bros, and apparently Steven Spielberg had some hand in this mess - Eight unrelated vignettes - and I seriously doubt most of these stories were even dreams to begin with - just the taking of ideas from far better movies ... Next up Oliver Reed, Ian McShane, Jill St John and Edward Woodward .. Great cast, a little uneven but never a dull moment ... Reed seems very at home in the role of an escaped convict out to murder his unfaithful wife ... This one saved the night after the dud that was Dreams

  37. Aww, shoot. RIP, Burt. I enjoyed his movies a lot and I agree that he was underrated! I think The Longest Yard was one of the first grownup movies that I saw, and it's still good! They were saying on our news that he was the #1 box office earner in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982- it's hard to imagine that these days. And at one point he had 4 different films that had been released and were all running in theaters at the same time because of their popularity. I am from the generation that remembers the big Cosmopolitan nude centerfold pose! (Much better than David Cassidy's, lol.) No actual naughty bits were shown but it was considered very provocative at the time. A friend's mom had it on their laundry room wall for years! RIP, Burt, I miss you already.

  42. I've been getting gayer and gayer for Steven Wilson as the months go by. Saw him live in May. I gave The Raven That Refused To Sing a few hard listens the last week. What an album. The latter half of The Watchmaker has beautiful piano progressions I wish I could replicate on guitar. I don't think I'm getting off the Wilson train anytime soon.

  44. QUOTE (DistantEarlyRushFan @ Sep 5 2012, 11:51 AM) QUOTE (rushgoober @ Sep 5 2012, 01:39 PM) Here's my take: 1. Rush --> The I wish we were Led Zeppelin album. 2. Fly By Night --> The what are these nutty songs are new drummer wrote oh well let's make the best of it album. 3. Caress of Steel --> The let's do drugs and make a weirdo album that alienates the record company AND the fans album. 4. 2112 --> The overthrowing a totalitarian regime sci-fi concept album plus a few other songs we came up with to fill out the 40 minutes about smoking pot and crying and stuff album. 5. A Farewell to Kings --> The we missed the boat on prog rock, but damnit, we're going to pretend it's 1972 anyway album. 6. Hemispheres --> The nobody can make music more complex than us album. 7. Permanent Waves --> The I'm exhausted after all those 20 minute epics about the nature of the universe except for that last song album. 8. Moving Pictures --> The we're going to buckle down and write catchy commercial songs if it kills us album. 9. Signals --> The let's take the whole synthesizer new wavy thing and go nuts album. 10. Grace Under Pressure --> The world is complicated and sucky and we're ready to whine about it album. 11. Power Windows --> The please take us seriously we write about really important stuff album. 12. Hold Your Fire --> The f*ck you to all the fans who abandoned us after 1981, we're going to turn the synthesizers up to 11 album. 13. Presto --> The we took the synths as far as we could, let's try to make songs as catchy as possible and hope for the success of Moving Pictures even though the songs are nowhere near as good album. 14. Roll the Bones --> The let's try that again and make even worse songs album. 15. Counterparts --> The let's cash in on the whole grunge thing album. 16. Test for Echo --> The let's go back to our roots and come up with lyrics as bad as on our first album album. 17. Vapor Trails --> The floundering in confusion while we overcome tragedy album. 18. Snakes and Arrows --> The we're in our 50's now and can still kick your ass comeback album. 19. Clockwork Angels --> The we're getting really old and we're going to make a big statement by doing a huge prog era concept album but without the prog because that was a long time ago album. You are commenting more on the musical direction of the band on some of your evaluations. I am trying to get to the heart of the lyrical/conceptual/thematic elements binding the songs on their respective albums together. Your comment about 2112 is very funny though. "fill out the 40 minutes about smoking pot and crying and stuff " Dude, I hope you didn't take ANY of that seriously.
