  2. Well, he was the only one who WASN'T a Nigerian scammer to answer my Craigslist ad. . . . Kidding! Honestly? There wasn't any one "ah - HAH!" moment for either of us. We may have had one of the most unromantic "proposals" ever. We were living together and one day I came home and announced, "I called Rick (our favorite priest) and we're all meeting for breakfast Friday to talk marriage plans." Husband's response was, "Oh, OK, cool!" He did get me a ring a month or so later, though. I also married kind of late - I had just turned 35. I'd been engaged in my 20's (we ended it because he reallyreallyreally wanted kids and I reallyreallyreally did not), but in retrospect it's good I waited. I think I was too much of a chaotic little mess to have married then. It wouldn't bother me if he called me the c-word. In fact, we have "insult contests" sometimes: Me: "You turdburglar." Him: "Slut." Me: "Assmunch." Him: "Gutter bitch." And so forth, until we get to the hardhitters like c--- and c-sucker. We also have farting contests. :D

  4. I, for one, love Nirvana. I'm the same age as the band and I honestly connected with their music. With that said, is Kurt Cobain overrated? Probably. Is David Grohl over-exposed? Yes. But, they represent a passing of the baton, so to speak. Look who David Grohl associates with - EVERY BODY! The man collaborates with LEGENDS! Does that make him a legend? Not yet. Foo Fighters are very popular and they connect with a generation that would benefit some exposure to a band like Rush. Try to enjoy the induction, afterwards put on Permanent Waves or A Farewell to Kings and remind yourself Rush deserve respect from musicians like David Grohl and Taylor Hawkins.

  7. That's what we see all the time kids in music shops composing songs that own the Beatles, it happens so often, it's called Beatling. You see them in there with their Kay SG guitars, coming out with classics by the boatload...

  8. I have zero problem with Dave and Taylor joining the boys for a song.. that is what they do at the RnRHoF induction show.. the inductees are hooked up with influential bands that THEY influenced for a song.

  9. There are alot of people in this forum who like to have their own version of the future rather than listening to the words that are right out of the Band's mouths. Listen to the full eddie trunk interview: http://eddietrunk.com/media/eddie-tv/ Right from the guys's mouths you hear it all without the need to speculate and create alternate futures. 1. They are taking at least a year off, There wont be an R40. 2. They arent done, They will make a record again. And they will tour it properly like they always have, they will just have to manage themselves physically. Everyone should see them this summer, more than once, if possible and get your fill. I think the biggest threat to Rush is some sort of external factor. A family member illness, a motorcycle accident, something unforeseen. That is more the worry I think they SHOULD take at LEAST a year off. They have done extensive touring, every year since 2007 except 2009, Let them take a break. Get their family groove back. NOT GET BURNT OUT. They have played so much of their material already since T4E, its not like they have an abundance of uncovered material anyways, except deep album buts mostly. They will turn the machine back on down the road, let them just take their proper time.....

  11. Damn right. I think Nirvanna is too, especially Cobain. Sometimes the truth hurts... and here's my version of the truth. Cobain is regarded as a "great song writer"... a "legend"... a "great poet"... why? Because he's dead. If he didn't take his life, Nirvanna would likely still be together, but no more "legendary" that The Chilli Peppers or Pearl Jam. They'd probably be a good band, but not legends. Nirvana changed music during a time when "hair" bands were the thing. I remember sitting with my band and hearing them for the first time—wow! We were a group of shredders and thought this was something so new and fresh. Image was suddenly passe. I'm thankful they came along...their music was formative to a generation of young musicians.

  12. I loved CA when it came out, and still very much enjoy it today. Knowing the story, and having read the book, makes it hard for me to just listen to one song and not the whole album. To me, it ranks up there with MP, Pew, and PoW as one of their best. Not only that, but the CA tour itself has reinvigorated certain old songs for me as well. (Are there still people avoiding spoilers at this point?) Both "the fourth song, just after Ged's first talk-set" and "the song from PoW just after the CA suite" just have a certain je ne sais quoi about them live that I just don't feel on the studio versions. Also, having "the song they open with" as the opener this tour has made me enjoy it a lot more than when it's buried in a random place in the set like on recent tours (maybe because of the anticipation building before the show and through the intro film).

  14. I liked it when it was first released, and I like it better than that now. The music on it has developed its own character after repeated listens. As for where it ranks among the others, I won't say- too long and drawn-out for me to explain, and it would be rather "nebulous", to use a Geddy word. But yeah, it's a really good record.

  15. http://images.crystalscomments.com/6/4258.gif Not only is that my favorite song on Led Zep IV, it's my favorite Zeppelin song, and one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time by anyone. Your wrongness cannot be overstated. http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lt0vogdaPb1qcyv0d.gif It's your favorite Zeppelin song? I think you're just trying to yank my chain. :P It's just too folksy for me. http://www.therushfo...re#entry2262273 - that's my top 25 songs of all time as part of my top 500 songs of all time thread - The Battle of Evermore is #10. If by too folksy you mean an incredibly beautiful song with fantastic acoustic guitars and incredible complex winding vocals with an amazing Lord of the Rings theme that completely blows you away every time you listen to it, then yes, I agree - it's "too folksy." :sarcastic: Okay, I stand corrected. I still don't care for the song, but that is an impressive list! Sorry, I might have responded a tad dramatically, ;) but glad you liked the list. :)

  16. Aren't these the same people who used to throw paint on fur coats? Even if you agree with their goals, it's difficult to support them when they engage in looney tactics.

  18. Very cool to see him mention Ronald Jones! Jones is a brilliant sound generator. I still don't understand what happened to him. It's clear he was something of an eccentric, but apparently there was some bad blood between him and some other members of the Lips, perhaps over drugs. My interest in the Flaming Lips severely diminished after he left. I know that's blasphemy in some circles. And this thread also reminds me of how much I like Adam Jones, and how much I tend to forget about Tool in general. They don't maintain a high profile, but that's part of their appeal. Anyway, the first time I saw the Flaming Lips was at a show they opened for Tool in Milwaukee. Failure was also on the bill. My friends and I had no idea who the Lips were (this was prior to She Don't Use Jelly). We were all pumped up for Tool and this totally bizarre, colorful band took the stage and began broadcasting noisy pop bliss with bubble machines blasting and Christmas lights swirling in the background. Most of the crowd was entirely bewildered. But I loved them.

  19. I still haven't gotten tired of it; obviously I don't play it as often as I did when I first bought it, but it still gets a lot of play. There's only one song I generally skip and that's "Halo Effect".

  20. It still gets far more plays than other albums. Whenever I try listening to one song, I always get stuck listening to the next 3 or 4 or just finish the damn thing.

  21. I'm trying really hard to like King Crimson...but they made it impossible. Too many notes!!! I'm not a big fan by any stretch (and I've never found one perfect album by a long way) but I swear they have something for everyone if you delve deep enough. Just soldier on through from beginning to end and enjoy the journey! :D-13:

  25. None of the criteria you list applies to me, but I don't hate it, and I don't think it's one of the best things they've ever done... I think it's a step below Snakes and Arrows, but I like it a lot more than some of the mid-late 80's output! It will never hit my top 5, but does live in my top 10

  27. Scarily enough, I can totally imagine Chuck D rapping Tom Sawyer, and picture the guys in Rush grinning. This idea gets my vote I absolutely believe we'll see SOMETHING with RUSH/PE and RUSH/Heart I think it would be SWEET to not only see Chuck D. taking a verse and styling it his way.. but we gotta have a Flava Flav "YEAH BOYYYYYYYY!" somewhere.. maybe at the end of the Freewill break? Alex's Limelight solo? I can only hope it's NOT the RTB rap.. not only is that too obvious, it isn't appropriate for the HoF show IMO. They've been reading the Yukon Blade Grinder it seems...amazing how that online rag influences RollingStone.

  29. That's an excellent observation, TS. I hadn't thought of that, but it does make perfect sense. And, 10 really just is an arbitrary number, after all, based on the number of digits most of us possess and the natural numbering system it engenders. I'll be happy with any Rush tour or album and they can all either whatever they want. :D Yes, agreed... it's just a number, so what's the big deal with an R40 Tour? Just like New Year's (which I think is just an over-commercialized, over-priced, drunken farce) or my birthday (which I couldn't give a shit about either)... RD40 is just a date on the calendar or just another multiple of "10" on the whole scheme of things. To the guys in the band, I'll bet it would be a good time to take break and have some time with their families.

  32. ^^^ this was my first thought too. I am not a drummer but Neil says it is difficult. Who are we to argue? I remember hearing them say (Geddy, iirc) that it was the toughest track to get to sound correctly when it was created in the studio too. I find Geddy's newer stuff to be more challenging to play than a lot of his older lines. To me, his playing today has faster passages, more subtle grace notes and his phrasing is more fluid. He plays with more emotion and has more command of the instrument than he did 30 years ago. MalNar is a great example and its done on a fretless bass, too - what intonation! :o CA song is very challenging with vocals that runs counter to the bass (a first for Rush!) I am not a guitarist, so I don't know the answer for guitar. But, I've known more than a few guitarists who've been frustrated by many of the Lifeson chords. "That's crazy" was a common utterance I would overhear from the guitarist I've known who could play Rush. JMO. In the pocket BassGurl!

  33. Sheldon Cooper, you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. If you choose to give up that right, anything you say, . . . how is natural science in any way a weak track?

  34. Not if you never really expected anything more from him other than a mediocre drummer and backup singer.

  35. Failed attempts at Super Bowl "half time" have not taught everyone a lesson? Remember Aerosmith a few years back. They paired them with some silly R&B singers and it sounded like crap. Ruined it for me. Let Rush do their music without the annoying influences of the other attendees. This night will be for them. This night has been long coming. Let Rush perform for us, not them.

  36. In all fairness, I'm thinking a lot of the old guard at RS are gone, replaced with younger , cooler, more well rounded types . Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan , but I'm sure a lot of current RS writers are aware of past ones ignorance. You're too nice. I was thinking that Rush has been in the limelight a lot more in the last couple of years so it's only natural that the bandwagon, suck-up, elitist maggot writers at RS would be there to interview the band

  40. I now hate Rush because of this! I can no longer be fan of a band that gives honest answers about how they felt in the past. I will now go find a band that does nothing but lie and gives me a constant smooshy feeling inside. Rush, you have lost your smooshiness somewhere down the road! :tsk:

  41. We met online. For the 4th of July, I would usually go to the beach and watch the bonfires and fireworks. For some reason, on that particular 4th of July, I didn't feel like going to Humarock and fighting through crowds and traffic and decided to join an online dating site instead. I signed up for a six month membership. Two hours after joining, I got an e-mail asking if we could meet. A few days later, we met at a restaurant and talked and shared a meal. We had both been through tough on-again/off-again relationships and were looking for some stability. She had also forgone her usual plans for the 4th of July, choosing instead to look online at the same dating site. Two weeks later, I went to a party with her and her family. We spent the day together and I couldn't remember ever feeling so at ease with someone. She was funny, she was easy to know, she was humble, she has the most amazing blue eyes I have ever seen. We talked long into the night. I never did go on any other dates from that dating site. Turns out, I didn't need a six month membership, I only needed a two hour one. We are quite the opposite of the other. She has simple tastes and is easy to understand. She is very down to earth and humble. Me, not so much. We balance and compliment each other. She pulls me back from my flights of fancy and I round her out world and teach her new things (like Rush!). Of course, there are down times too, but I would not trade a single day of the time she has been in my life. She makes me a better person and I love her with all of my heart. I am grateful to have her in my life and I feel lucky to have found such a grounded and loving person. Our marriage is a natural extension of this feeling and our commitment to a life together. Today is our second wedding anniversary. We both wish we'd met 20 years earlier. Of course, we couldn't have gotten married back then.
