sleeper, been a long time since I have seen that one, but some scenes just never leave your mind completely.

As far as sci-fi comedy goes, i really enjoyed Galaxy Quest

Galaxy Quest is classic!

There's one classic I remember watching

a few yrs. back called " Forbidden Planet"

It was released in 1956, and it was really

ahead of its time, as far as affects go.

The flick stars Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon,

and Anne Francis...Awesome early SI-FI !

Terminator 1 & 2

Star Trek 2 & 11 are the best ones

Empire Strikes Back

The Thing (1982), if that counts as sci-fi.

The Abyss

Total Recall

The Running Man

Predator

TRON

Alien

Back to The Future 1 & 3*

*I would consider these movies Sci Fi.

Back to The Future 1 & 3*

*I would consider these movies Sci Fi.

By definition they are considered science fiction. The basis for calling a work science fiction is that it has to have one or more of the following:

  • Set in the future
  • Technological advances that aren't present in the year set
  • major changes in social structure or environment
  • aliens/robots/cyborgs/etc
  • Things that contradict our current understanding of the laws of nature (ie time travel, wormholes etc)
  • Psychic powers/telechenetics/mind control/etc

The best definition of science fiction and fantasy, that I've ever read, is this:

Science fiction deals with the improbable. Fantasy deals with the impossible.

Huey Duey n Louie...damn right! and

Soylent Green. The scene where Edward G. is on his way out..cremated and? Turned into Green Chow. Those nature scenes after you've been immersed in inner inner city: sweltering unrelenting heat, dirt, air pollution and overovercrowding. Those scenes with the classical strains as background....you never forget his final journey. The "streetsweepers" coming along, scooping up rioter looters what have you....for people feed!

and another Charlton Heston work

The Omega man

What are your favorite Sci-Fi movies of all time?  Or better yet, list all the great sci-fi movies you can think of!

And let's keep fantasy out of this thread - I love LOTR and Harry Potter, but they're not sci-fi...

Top of the heap:

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Matrix
Brazil
Altered States
Terminator 2
Blade Runner
Logan's Run
Zardoz

Honorable mentions:

Alien
Avatar
2001 - A Space Odyssey
Back to the Future trilogy
Brainstorm
Children of Men
The City of Lost Children
Contact
Cocoon
The Dead Zone
Dark City
The Dark Knight
Escape From New York
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Galaxy Quest
Inception
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (70's version)
The Last Starfighter
Men in Black
Minority Report
Planet of the Apes (original)
Return of the Jedi
Sleeper
Spiderman
Spiderman 2
Starman
Star Trek (2009)
Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek Generations
Terminator
The 5th Element
Time After Time
Total Recall
X-Men
X-Men II

I'm sure I missed some great ones.

That's a great list. Most of mine are on there. All of the obvious ones like Star Wars' and The Matrix etc. But I LOVE Blade Runner, Logan's Run and Contact.

I own Logan's Run and I have a friend who is a giant sci-fi fan. I kept telling him how Logan's Run was a classic. I explained that it has dated special effects, but still amazing. He watched it and was like, "thanks for wasting 2 hours of my life!" wtf.gif

One movie that is on my second tier list that I really like and NOBODY ever remembers or has seen is Outland with Sean Connery.

Another old movie that I love is The Andromeda Strain from 1971. The book by Michael Crichton is great too, as all Crichton's books usually are.

I am a DIEHARD Carpenter fan, but I absolutely could not get into Ghosts of Mars. And I even liked The Ward...

Blade Runner is the greatest sci-fi movie of all time and Galaxy Quest is the best Star Trek movie ever made. The first three Star Wars movies used to be good until Lucass rendered them unwatchable and I'd rather watch a week-long marathon of Jersey Shore than any of the prequels.

My favourite Sci-Fi movies are Blade Runner and Alien.

After that it's the likes of The Matrix, Aliens, Predator and 2001 but those two are far out there far me.

Let's see, my faves....

2001: A Space Odyssey is my fave sci-fi movie and possibly the finest movie in any genre I've seen.

Star Wars/The Empire Strikes Back might for sentimental reasons still make it into some sort of top ___ list. The other 4 not even close.

Any of the Star Treks? Naw. Maybe the reboot? As JA said Galaxy Quest might just be the best 'Star Trek' movie.

The first 2 X-Men, not any of the others. And if we're including superhero movies then The Watchmen as well. No others.

The Matrix-- not parts 2 and 3.

Blade Runner.

The first 2 Aliens.

The first Predator.

The first 2 Terminators

Close Enounters Of The Third Kind.

Definitely The Day The Earth Stood Still (the original of course).

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, both the original and definitely the Nimoy one.

Logan's Run for sentimental reasons.

That's it for now.

Brainstorm

That's interesting that you mention this one. I remember very well when that movie came out but I think most people have never heard of it. It was in 70 mm and alternated between 35 and 70 whenever someone put on the device. It was a really cool effect. That was the last movie that Natalie Wood did, in fact she died while filming it. They had to alter the movie in order to make it work. I think that it would have been better had she finished filming it. At any rate, that movie ranks as one of my most wanted movies to be redone. It had a really cool concept.
