One hour and forty minutes on my bike. Rode for a long time and then suddenly I turn a corner on top of a hill - and there was the sea. It was a perfect summer day.

It's gonna hurt tomorrow!

But its a good hurt! :D

So, here's a couple of pics of my daughter and I at Tahoe yesterday evening, before seeing Shakespeare at Sand Harbor.

Today I went to ophthalmologist in Iowa City to talk about my ever-notorious eyes - why my prescription is so friggin' high (contacts prescription is -12) and why I'm Ray Charles at night. Ran some tests (including this excellent photo of me wired up for an electroretinagram), and we determined a couple things.

My night blindness - diagnosed as congenital stationary night blindness - cannot be fixed unfortunately, but because it runs in my family, I'm going to give a blood sample in the future for research for future generations, and will get treatment if and when it becomes available. My high prescription, however, can be fixed, and I may qualify for a lens surgery similar to what people with cataracts receive - implanting a lens to boost the natural eye lens. Will likely see a cornea and contact lens specialist later this year.

Problems might arise with my insurance provider because this procedure is commonly done for cosmetic reasons (like lasik commonly is), but given the increasing difficulties to find contacts of my prescription - my current provider just stopped making my index - and to find frames that will fit my thick lenses, and because I am essentially handicapped without 24/7 corrective vision, this is a serious health and quality of life issue.

So I suppose in the "what made my day" category I learned a lot about my terrible eyes and what can be done to help!

TL;DR My eyes are f***ing terrible and have always been f***ing terrible. Night blindness can't be fixed, but I might get surgery to fix being blind as a bat. Scheduling appointments to determine options including but not limited to surgery, and donating my body in the name of SCIENCE!

^ Nice!

That is great news! Best of luck with the vision correction. BC. In the meantime, I'll just say that you are one of the most perceptive people I know. You see plenty.

Thanks, goose, means a lot coming from you

We'll see how this pans out. Without 24/7 corrective lenses I'm full blown handicapped, and when wearing glasses, this obviously eliminates any peripheral vision.

My mum's prescription is that too I think. She also has bad astigmatism I think.

I don't have astigmatism but I have severe myopia.

Andrew, good to hear about your trip to the eye doctor.

I have horrid night vision as well. I hate, absolutely hate, having to drive at night as I have a very hard time seeing the road, and the glare from ongoing headlights is a killer. No, there is nothing that can be done, and it is, more or less, an inherited "defect" that we just have to learn to live with.

Hoping that all turns out well for you. There's so much that can be done today. So many options we didn't have back when I was growing up.

Spending time with Blue J last night. Good to actually meet him and share life...very good!

Cool. "Goatnut meetup" kinda rhymes

It's got Country Top 10 written all over it. Kenny Chesney, maybe?

That'll work.

TM, any future meetup organized by you should be called exactly that: Goatnut Meetup. The event title alone would draw in thousands!
