Victor Or My Favorite Headache, Which Solo album is better?

I like both solo albums a lot(both 10/10 for me), but I will go with Victor!

Geddy wins this pretty easily for me. A really solid album , I would even rank it higher than certain Rush albums. The Victor record is a more hit and miss affair. It's still got some excellent stuff on it (Start Today is a brilliant song imo.) , but Geddy's album is more consistent I think.

Both albums represent what each bring to the table. Alex brings the inspiration and left turns. Geddy brings the craft and structure. Thank the music gods they found each other.

Victor's highs are higher than MFH's and Victor's lows are lower than MFH's. MFH takes no chances -- Geddy is playing it absolutely safe.

 

For those reasons, I like Victor better.

I love what Lifeson was doing on Victor. He took every chance there was, tried everything he couldn't do in Rush, turned the humor dial way up, took every left turn, and he sounds like he enjoyed the pure freedom of creativity.

 

It is chock full of missed marks, but just as full of creative curiosities that I would love to have seen explored more.

 

What it is not is structured. It's clearly an artist who has emerged from the boundaries set by Lee and Peart. He needs to be reined in, but Victor is a great testimony to how important he is to Rush.

 

Nevertheless, MFH is a better album. It's also very safe and very Rush. Lifeson didn't play any Rush on Victor. Lee clearly is better at making a great album. He is controlled and meticulous. It's very very good and it seems that he is definitely the one who keeps Rush from getting out of control.

 

I think what both albums do best is show how they need each other.

I don't think Geddy was intentionally "playing it safe". I think he was just making the album he wanted to make.

 

I do agree with your first sentence though. Still, overall I'd have to go with MFH.

 

A few points...

 

- Geddy's MFH vocals are way more listenable than Edwin's on Victor.

- Dalbello's vocals were fun but I'm glad it was just one tune. Don't think I would've liked a whole album of her.

- I really could've done without Charlene & Esther and let that tune be a full on instrumental.

- I wish Geddy had the desire to make at least one instrumental on MFH.

- Geddy's lyrics > Alex's lyrics...by a huge margin

I agree with most of what you're saying there. But I think Lifeson DID play Rush (albeit just a little) in "Promise". I just have to ignore the Edwin vocals and forgettable lyrics in that one and I'll hear some Lifeson Rush.

I'll listen to Geddy's more probably (Admittedly not an Edwin fan) but damn if Victor doesn't hit that sweet spot. The guy really is a musical genius.

no bigger fan of Al than me, in Rush simply the most imaginative rock guitarist there'll ever be imo but, Victor is complete garbage :) just gave it a listen now actually first time in years, only one little section in the middle of At The End does anything for me, sounds like coulda been on a Rush album.... Ged's solo effort on contrary is a fine piece of work, beautifully written and arranged, doesnt even miss Al's edge, makes it clear who main song arranger is in Rush
