Rhyta
The PoliceVan HalenThe FixxDuran DuranINXS Not necessarily all my favorite bands, but their music was everywhere. Some good ones I forgot, The Fixx, Duran Duran and INXS. That's why I picked Prince, he was on the radio and heavy rotation on MTV. Raspberry Beret drove me nuts but his other stuff was great. Nova Carmina
Bands that epitomize the '80s? If we're talking the 80s as distinct from other decades, then I wouldn't have much* metal/hard rock on my list, since those things were residual from the '70s. I guess thrash could be on the list . . . oh, and hair metal. EurythmicsDuran DuranMetallcaMotley Crue/Bon JoviDepeche Mode (Huh, I guess 40% isn't "much") Edited July 12, 2020 by Nova Carmina

His songs were all on the radio throughout the late seventies and eighties Genesis too. Was going to mention The Cure but went with The Fixx instead.

Rick N. Backer
Duran Duran The Police Mötley Crüe U2 Def Leppard I might swap the Crue out for, say Prince and the Revolution to get some dance/funk representation in there, but that's otherwise pretty solid. Metal, punk/ska, alternative/college (I was thinking U2 or R.E.M. here), new wave, you covered the gamut.

The Cat 3
The Go-Gos... ...they gave us three great albums in the 1980’s with “Beauty and the Beat”, “Vacation” and “Talk Show”. The first two albums, “Beauty and the Beat” & “Vacation” are amazing pop-punk classics. The third album, “Talk Show” is simply a hands down pop masterpiece.

goose
DEVO, Prince, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Talking Heads I changed Depeche Mode to Duran Duran. Also, no metal, because I don't think the sound is specific to the 80s. Edited July 12, 2020 by goose

There were so many great bands in the 80s, it really is difficult to pick just five.
