I think Rush can be considered metal, as back in the 70s, they were considered metal, and their fanbase was metal heads ..

 

From my recollection and experience, Rush was NOT considered a "prog" band back then - if you liked Rush, you probably liked Sabbath, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, UFO, KISS, AC/DC etc ....

 

Maybe not all these bands could be considered metal by today's standards, but it was different back then ..

 

I saw Saxon open for Rush - and they were the only band I have ever seen open for Rush that was well received by the crowd

Max Webster was very well received when they opened for Rush on the MP tour, at least in Indy.

Rust in Peace is absolutely deserved, to have been the first mention out of their catalog...sure. But yeah, they made so many greats during that period. I might even include Countdown to Extinction, too.

Truly one of the best progressive metal albums made, I'd put it above almost everything Dream Theater has made. Most of the album are all huge concert hits for Opeth, it's like their Moving PIctures. Plus it features the Leper Affinity which I find one of the most evil sounding songs, it's the album that opened the door for me to start listening to music this heavy.

 

NO HATE GUYS!

 

The worst of Opeth tops the best of Dream Theater.

Opeth are just in a different league to all other bands of their genre.

 

DT are just over praised. Seriously...in their day maybe they came across as something amazing but in the last 16 years prog metal came a long way and surpassed DT in little to no time at all.

Perhaps one of the finest metal albums ever made. My personal favorite. We would be ashamed of ourselves if we looked back and this was not on the list

I chose Blizzard of Ozz because when it came out no one really saw it coming.

 

Everyone had written Ozzy off as a victim of his own excess.

 

It was pretty original stuff and just far enough away from Sabbath to make it interesting.

 

And then, of course, you have the late great Randy Rhoads.

49. Isis - Oceanic

 

Since djflex beat me to including Panopticon on this list, I'm giving its predecessor the nod for inclusion on this list. This is the modern "classic" for the so-called "post-metal" genre (a pigeonhole name which I despise yet I have no other choice but to use it) post-Neurosis' Through Silver In Blood, and the only other album of theirs that should be included on a greatest list. To this day it remains one of the best albums of that metal scene and just my opinion, it's not surprising since the bands that spawn after them are either complete hits or misses for me personally.

A near perfect slice of Black Sabbath inspired pop metal, with beautiful crooning vocals from the 21st century Jim Morrison, Ville Valo.

 

During the 00's, Finland's HIM were one of the biggest bands in the metal scene AND the pop charts. Cathedral, Black Sabbath, Metallica and others have all embraced and praised their music.

 

Metallica even handpicked them to support several years back.

 

One of the defining albums of my teens, and one of four albums that completely transformed my listening habits.

The dawn of the Dio era. And maybe the birth of what became "80s metal." From the opening rush of Neon Knights to the closing churn of Lonely is the Word, IMO no filler on this one. Even Wishing Well and Walk Away.
