If Def Leppard qualify, then so do Rush, and even more so.

 

Masterpiece. I really can hear the roots of 21st century prog metal bands such as Mastodon and Dream Theater when I hear these early Rush albums.

 

And Alex was certainly a metallic guitarist back in the day.

Ehhh I think Def Leppard are more metal than Rush. Hair metal is a genre that is still part of metal. Prog rock is kind of its own thing and it requires quite a few extra notches in heaviness to become prog metal.

From my recollection and experience, Rush was NOT considered a "prog" band back then - if you liked Rush, you probably liked Sabbath, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, UFO, KISS, AC/DC etc ....

 

Maybe not all these bands could be considered metal by today's standards, but it was different back then ..

 

I saw Saxon open for Rush - and they were the only band I have ever seen open for Rush that was well received by the crowd

Fair enough, and I do think it's true that they were heavy for their day... but still! It feels wrong to me.

I got into Rush through Mastodon.

 

I hear so much of the Rush influence on metal that to my ears they sound more like metal than any of the Hair Metal bands. Who, for the most part, sound like out of control AOR bands.

I remember being harassed to no end as a kid because I liked Rush and Kiss .. The main culprits were fans of The Who, and I remember one older kid who loved YES who would always say shit to me ..
