  1. 1. POLL: Is Eric Clapton overrated?

Recommended Posts

Clapton was good in Cream, The Yardbirds and The Bluesbreakers and as a guest (like on The White Album) but somewhere along the way he lost his motivation or desire. He sold out to become a pop singer who plays guitar a bit.

I think he decided songwriting was more interesting than learning new licks. To be fair, I love a good number of his solo songs, and his Unplugged album is great.

I think he decided money and a life of superstar luxury was more interesting than learning new licks. :16ton:

Any guitarist who is deified is overrated.

Any person who is deified is overrated.

What aboot Jebus, or the Pope, or Mary, or Joseph Smith, or L. Ron?

side note, as a Christian, the only one of those who's is deified is Jesus. Or at least He's the only one who should be, anyone doing otherwise didn't read their Ten Commandments.

Not that we want to get into a big religious discussion outside of SOCN, right? ;)

RIGHT. You're bloody well right! :) My post does not refer to any past or present religious figure.

My post is about people, as in a beloved rock star, sports star, film star, politician or your favorite bartender. When you put someone on a pedestal of "Can Do No Wrong", you're setting yourself up for some major disappointment!!

Never much for his solo albums, but 461 Ocean Blvd is my favorite.

He was fantastic in Blind Faith and that album is a true classic. His solo in Do What You Like still gives me chills. 3:15 in

I played this album in high school until there were no more grooves.

Voted unsure, and hoped the replies would help me decide. And now I'm more unsure than when I voted. :P

He's very good, great in his early days when he was among a handful of elite players paving the way. He's written some excellent songs since then, but as a musician I feel like he's focused more on songwriting than playing so... great then not great. Hence, maybe-ish.

What would you say?

Eric is a Legend but once he went solo he became totally boring. Just give the CREAM stuff all day long. Also Eric absolutely kills it in the "TOMMY" movie shredding to "Eyesight To The Blind." Epic.

Derek And The Dominos is also excellent.

Everything else?

A snooze fest......

Got to agree with this....daft though it seems, if I'm thinking of guitarists, I tend to forget about Eric completely, even though I have most of his albums. For me, he's a singer who plays the guitar.

Much like Eddie Van Halen, Clapton inspired many to pick up the guitar, and his name is synonymous with rock guitar playing , even though his output has been a bit spotty over the years. Yeah there are guys all over YouTube who can ape their style, but they do that because of the inspiration they gave them. I enjoy his work with cream and some of his 70s stuff. His place is secure in the history of guitar, even though I prefer a gary Moore type blues to Clapton.

There is no way Eric Clapton is "overrated".

That is truly an insane suggestion!

Even if you were to somehow diminish his contribution as a guitarist - which really impossible - but then you would have to argue his influence through the bands he founded or co-founded. And even if you were to to diminish those, you would have to argue his prowess as a hit-maker.

Writing "You Look Wonderful Tonight" is incredible in and of itself.

Randy Bachman mentioned in an interview that he's perceived as the Canadian Eric Clapton.

They're both guitar legends who've played in multiple successful bands with solo careers.

Mind you, when I listen to 'Wonderful Tonight' and 'These Eyes' by The Guess Who; both Clapton and Bachman wrote them with the same subject matter in mind. They were both feeling frustrated with waiting awhile for their significant other to get ready, from interviews noted.

I've really been enjoying your trivia tangents lately, RushFanForever.

Meanwhile, in my opinion, Bachman beats Clapton on songs about this subject matter.

Agreed. These Eyes is a stone cold classic. Wonderful Tonight is just alright.

Wonderful Tonight bores me silly.

But then, I'll take Randy Bachman over Eric Clapton any time Clapton didn't have Ginger Baker playing behind him.
