Why? Please tell me? :eyeroll:

I don't care if he wants to drink, not play the drums, or whatever, but I do care that he has such disdain for people in general and fans specifically. The very people that allowed him to pursue his livelihood and make a lot of money doing it, are the ones he seems to talk the worst about.

Neil once said,"extroverts will never understand introverts" and based on my personal experience it's the most truthful thing he's ever said.

Neil can't become that person any more than you can teach your dog to sing Red Barchetta.

I've pointed this out on here so many times when these threads come up because i have the same personality in that respect and it's baffling to me that people just can't grasp this.

If you walk up on a bird and it flies away it's real easy to assume the bird is a dick and hates you but that opinion is of no consequence to the bird and has no basis in reality. . Silly analogy I know but you get the idea. ..hopefully :P

How much of an introvert can a person be when they play in front of thousands of people multiple nights a year or appear in concert films and documentaries? If you want to talk about that, maybe look up Andy Partridge.

Not to mention long drum solos and stick tossing and twirling!

He wanted to retire but decided to keep giving 120% for a couple more decades until he physically couldn't do it to his own high standard any more and being called a dick every step the whole time because of his shyness. . wow! I for one hope he's having a nice retirement.

In his books he talks about both his drive for perfection and his difficulty of staying motivated once he feels he's nailed it in a tour. Once that happens he yearns for home. Not exactly 120% IMO.

Thanks Goose

Perhaps this guy has had a skinfull and had a bad day, I have been there

Had a skinful last weekend ha! No jk..

I think I'm so eager to jump in and defend Neil because I've dealt with the same type of misunderstandings all my life. I don't mean from my fans (haha ya right!), but people. trying to figure out how to connect with people while being labeled "antisocial".

"People are social creatures", says the extrovert to the other agreeing extroverts while the introvert in the room quietly thinks to himself..

Anyway, didn't mean to rant there lol

Oh and Steve.. Sabian but I've been without a kit now for over a year :(

Thank you so much dude, I knew you are a top guy who is just a bit pissed off right now

No worries

I'm going to listen to Focus now and perhaps a bit of The Dan and Weather Report

Thijs has got Pierre Van Der Linden back on the kit. It would be wonderful if they could get Jan back.

Here's hoping xxxxx

"For a person of my sensibility..."

Meaning, in his most insufferably elitist tone, the only correct sensibility.

Amazing drummer offset by his weird and taciturn personality and copy cat intellectualism.

I'll never forget the vid of him RUNNING full tilt from the stage to his bus on the last documentary...god forbid he interact with any of the other human things behind stage. f***ing weirdo.

Geddy & al...they seem like more normal humans. I wouldn't be surprised if they're relieved to not deal with peart's weird personality traits.

I love Rush but the more I learn about Peart the more I think he's basically a selfish douche who wanted his cake and eat it too.

It is hard to grasp such a concept. Neil should written lyrics aboot the subject there would be the makings of a great song there.

Performing is not socializing. I'm an extreme introvert and spent 30 years as a dynamic classroom teacher and public speaker.

Introvert's can develop a professional persona that belies their discomfort with socializing.

Totally.

Teaching and public speaking has helped my introverted nature though. I wouldn't say I'm an introvert anymore BUT someone from my childhood would never guess I do what I do today. I've heard "You've changed/You're different" (in regards to those introverted tendencies) from various people who hadn't seen me in ages too.

I was going to comment earlier that Peart's comment about extroverts not being able to understand introverts is something an introvert would say! I'd know since I was one for half of my life.

Nobody is born with INTROVERT or EXTROVERT stamped on them .. There is no one set of traits or behaviors for any label

Jung believed that each of us have introverted and extroverted qualities - which I feel is true ...

I believe that Neil does fit the definition of an introvert, in that his focus is on his inner activity - it think that is obvious in Neil's case ..

Again, there is no one size fits all ... Some people who lean towards introversion can be very aware of other's feelings, and some just the opposite ....

Neil could very well be both and introvert and a dick

There's a difference between being an introvert and having a social disorder. Introvert/extrovert labels apply to how a person "recharges their batteries. It has nothing directly to do with having an awkward social manner. I took a Briggs Meyers test years ago. I can't remember my 4-letter result, but I was definitely classified as an introvert. All that means is when it's time to recharge the batteries, I prefer to be alone. I get in the car and go for a drive by myself, or play 9 holes alone, or plug in my bass and noodle around. My wife, even though she's much more a social butterfly, is also anot I. My father on the other hand, goes nuts if he's left alone, and doesn't understand why all people aren't like that.

What i've never understood is if you like what Neil has done with Rush, why does it matter how he is personally? Even if he was a friendly guy, most of us would still never have the chance to meet him. So, who really cares what he's like? I couldn't give two shits how he is for real. All I care about is the fact that I enjoy what he did with Rush.

It's NOT Neil's introversion that irritates some of us. He has every right to his privacy. It's how judgmental he can sound when speaking of people he often doesn't even know. I continually get a sense of generalizing and looking down from a pedestal, which is probably why I've never gotten far with any of his books. He's absolutely free to make that kind of social commentary; I just personally find it off-putting.

At the end of the day though, I don't need my rock stars to be perfect human beings. He's a phenomenal drummer and that's ultimately all I really care about.

I think some of you are over-generalising from some brief views into Neil's life. He does sound like he's pontificating sometimes but I would think if somebody told him that, he'd be surprised. Nobody forced anybody to read his books where he's free to express whatever the damn well he wants. If you don't like his tone, don't read them. When you're locked inside a motorcycle helmet and have thoughts you'd like to capture, you're probably not overly concerned about what a potential reader would read between the lines. For all we know, he was running to his bike because he was late, not because he was running away from contact. I've noticed he does very well in one on one encounters when he knows who he's talking to but not in groups of strangers. I'm just like that. I used to speak to groups of 200+ and was told I did it well. But I would rather run away when a few strangers wanted to speak to me afterwards. And if the other two all get along with him and did for 40 years, who are we to judge?

 It's a well-documented pattern from him, and not just off-the-cuff commentary.

Doesn't make him less of a drummer, of course.

You are absolutely right re: performing and socializing. Tossing and twirling is showmanship. What the sticks do on the drums is performance. You can't hear tossing/twirling on a recording (unless it's Keith Moon!). It's one thing to play the drums (I do), it's another thing to attract attention to yourself by doing stick tricks. I find it interesting that such an introverted fellow does such extroverted musical things such as long solos and stick stuff. I'm sure he feels safe in his musical zone but damn, I wish he looked like he was having fun when he played. He looks like he's as the dentist's or having something removed. "Guess I should twirl my stick now. Sigh." :D

Some fun stick stuff at 2:45:

Fancy, showy, and musical. This guy is amazing and a metric tonne of funne!

Neil gives a huge glimpse of himself with his books and website. It sounds like he has problems with one on one and group interactions.

He owes us nothing but the music. A guy like joey Kramer seems like a party type typical rock drummer, but who would you rather hear play drums? I like the fact that Peart goes against the grain of the typical Keith moon , crazy , out of control rock drummer.
