Brown Eyed Girl was the first song My Sweet Bride and I danced to as husband and wife at our Wedding. To this day, I get goosebumps whenever I hear it.3 points

Not bad but glaciers are slow...The Ice has been proposed too...I wouldn't mind the Blizzard (although too close to the Avalanche ) and Outlaws has possibilities. These are on the registered trademarks list and fans are voting on them. Time will tell if the team will get a good name. Fingers crossed.. The welcome party yesterday had a full house and lots of kids in their youth hockey jerseys met them at the airport. I was surprised at the size of the turnout. https://www.nhl.com/news/utah-nhl-team-welcomed-by-fans-at-delta-center2 points

The Weeknd-After Hours (10/10) Another guy who i think is making really cool pop records he's more on the R N B side but he is just really unique i think. Mick2 points

Van Morrison every time. Great voice; nice lyrics without being insipid. Funkier groove.2 points

Exactly. Or, in the case of Tik Tok, a (malevolent) government hiding behind a corporation.2 points

"The evidence," in this context refers to, "the Chinese Communist Party accessed the data of TikTok users on a broad scale, and for political purposes." And yes, a case can be proven on the word of 1 witness provided the jury believes that person is telling the truth. China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law states that “any organization” must assist or cooperate with state intelligence work while a separate 2014 Counter-Espionage Law says “relevant organizations ... may not refuse” to collect evidence for an investigation. Since ByteDance, which owns TikTok, is a Chinese company, it would likely have to abide by these rules if Chinese authorities asked it to turn over data. Laws and regulations are only one aspect of the Communist Party’s pervasive control. There are no legal limits on the party’s powers. The authorities also can threaten to cancel licenses, conduct regulatory or tax investigations and use other penalties to compel compliance by Chinese and foreign companies operating in China. The party sometimes conveys orders using “window guidance,” or informal communication in private. It has used crackdowns to tighten control over technology companies and force them to align with its goals. Advertisement The Chinese government has also sought more direct control over companies by getting seats on boards of directors. https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-bytedance-shou-zi-chew-8d8a6a9694357040d484670b7f4833be There's a reason why the Chinese version of TikTok has dramatically different content than ours.1 point

Here's how it goes: "Tell you what, we'll let a foreign power harvest data on every citizen in this country!" "Hang on, won't the serfs clamour for such an outlet to banned?" "Exactly! Then we can completely control the internet!" You've got to hand it to them, the statists are miles ahead of the scum.1 point

It wouldn't surprise me at all. A guy like that needs some focus for his intensity; I don't see him sitting in rocking chair and reading on his porch. He has said he'd never manage in England again, but that leaves a lot of room elsewhere.1 point

The reasoning for the ban all sounds complicated to me and probably holds a lot more bias than can easily be parsed into right and wrong. What I can say though is Tik Tok has had a very strange effect on popular music the last five years or so, and while it hasn’t all been bad, there are definite negatives I wouldn’t be sad to see go. Not to mention I have a lot of skepticism towards the staying power of any art that goes viral on such a fickle and fast paced platform. Friends have told me Tik Tok is the future of music promo, I don’t think so. I think it’s a weird part of the present, and may quickly become part of the past.1 point

You know I’m a sucker for good backing vox. Man she’s incredible. She and Olivia should work together honestly. Idk what it would sound like but it just couldn’t be average.1 point
-
her backing vocals with herself too. a few of those made me back up the song to hear them again. i think she gets flack because of her image from that first album. but really that's not her (at least fully) she's hilarious in interviews too. like she seems really chill. i can't wait till next month. This seconed album was special as fukk. Mick1 point

YES!! I have no idea where the negativity towards her originates. This is pop music at its best. Forward thinking, relatable, sing able, impressive, and backed with some actual quite classic ideals (Billie Bossa anyone?) Plus the girl can SING. She might be the best vocalist in the top 40 right now.1 point

Billie Eilish-Happier Than Ever (9/10) I REALLY REEEALLY like this girl now. i short changed her a lot. There's a handful of people trying to bring pop outta the mud. Olivia, Taylor, Sabrina Carpenter. WILLOW. i'd even put the Weeknd there as well. and yes......Billie Eilish has to be named. ESPECIALLY after this sophmore album. i mean. Take your pick of tracks on here. i was gonna list favs but it's literally highlight upon highlight for me. Her lyrics are super relatable even with me at 39, lol. she's mixing genres pretty smoothly. and got tyo say more nuanced singer then she appears. She has a new album next month so i'm excited. I like the debut.....but I LOVE Happier Than Ever. Mick1 point

Not just any pop acts either. He’s a tried and true hit maker. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Watt_(record_producer) Apparently he also plays guitar in Eddie’s solo backing band, so that’s probably got something to do with his presence here.1 point

https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/08/tech/tiktok-data-china/index.html China is an authoritarian government. Useful idiots may tell you that a Chinese company is not necessarily beholden to the CCP. You're smart. Is that consistent with how you've seen those type of governments act? Tik Tok can continue on in the U.S. as long as it likes. It just can't be run by a company that is a front for the CCP.1 point

this guy worked with pop acts. why he's working with rock acts like PJ and the Stones don't know. i liked the stones album but that production stunk too. Mick1 point

I have voted 'no choice' purely because I don't recall ever hearing the Turtles' song. The band probably are not so well known in the UK so unfair to vote otherwise.1 point

Hey Rush Fans The new movie "The Iron Claw" about the Von Erich family who were big in wrestling in the late 70's and early 80's features Tom Sawyer played in full during a cool wrestling montage! This is the film's preview but the actual film plays TS almost in full: I recommend the movie, it's entertaining, but tragic.1 point

I have never used Tik Tok but know of others who use it for their business. I would assume they could use other social media for the same thing but I am not clear on why the same scrutiny is not being directed towards Meta, YouTube and Twitter. The foreign government involvement is worrisome but I haven't seen much information to back that up. Seems like a knee jerk reaction IMHO but I don't have a dog in this fight.1 point

I'm an old guy, so I asked my kids (20-25): "Will you miss Tik Tok?" "No, not really," they said. I asked my students (17-20): "Will you miss Tik Tok?" "No, not really," they said. "There are other options," they all said. End of story. (I think it's hilariously sad, though, how little Americans care about how much of our activity is tracked -- by governments and by corporations.)1 point

Feeling very sad for my brother today. His cat Garfield was put to sleep Sunday. She (yes, a girl..there's a funny story there) had been losing weight for a week or so and I took them to the vet Thursday. Seems she had a blockage and wasn't getting much nourishment from her food, and even if they did surgery the prognosis wasn't good. He took her home Friday to have time with her over the weekend. Losing a pet is always traumatic but for him, it has been devastating. He lives alone and she was his little buddy and companion. Going to be difficult to come home to a truly empty house now. My heart just hurts for him.1 point

I like it. Would it be the first Maiden album I grab if I haven’t listened to them in a while? Probably not. But I feel like I like the last 2 more than most of the post 7th Son stuff. And for the record, when I got into them Killers was their new album.1 point
