  1. That gatefold LP cover scared the shit out of me when I was a little kid. My cousin showed it to me and she narrated some demon and devil stories thereto and when she dropped the needle of the record player, I nearly died! I was 8 at the time.

  2. Here is "Time Stand Still" as performed by the US Army Band as a tribute to Neil. Coincidentally, I was cutting onions at the same time.

  4. The album is special because it's the band's debut album. Black Sabbath's sound is unique, which is why people have been forever arguing over how to define it (heavy metal, psychedelic rock, etc.). The band gave rise to a sub-genre of rock & roll, be it Satanic rock, or Occult Rock or whatever people want to call it. The band's sound and lyrics were immensely seductive to young people in the late 60's, who always loved a reason to reject Authority - especially the Catholic Church. Just by mentioning Satan or Lucifer, the band made their songs very attractive to young people. The heavy-blues rock music blended perfectly with the eerie, even scary lyrics that talked of Satan, Armageddon, and other horrors. It was a perfect album for the counter-culture of the late 60's and early 70's.

  5. Objectively? Well I suppose one could point to the technical abilities of Ward, Iommi and Butler. That's about it. Subjectively? If you like the sound those three created with Osbourne (in the running for my favorite band) then it was a fantastic collection of songs. It's not their best album, that will be celebrating its 50th a little later this year, but not too many bands released better debuts.

  7. Another great article from medium: https://medium.com/@...ro-d2775dfda119 This describes the essence of Neil's character as an individual, his approach and attitude towards life and fame, etc. I'll admit that there is nothing new here, but the way the writer has expressed so many lovely sentiments about Neil just warms your heart! :)

  9. Lemmy also said Motorhead was a rock band too. Obviously both he and Ozzy heard things differently than the rest of us. i just find it funny that fans passionatly al say Sabbath.... first metal band. ozzy.......I HATE THAT LABEL!!!!!! lol. Mick MCR hates the emo label, none of the grunge bands liked the grunge label, I bet the Ramones didn’t consider themselves a punk band either. Amazing how artists don’t always realize what they’ve created, or just don’t like its reputation.

  12. What doesn't mentioned a lot is that Black Sabbath has a jazz influence, which is noted in this recent Rolling Stone article here. In 2005, All About Jazz interviewed drummer Bill Ward in a two part interview about the jazz influence here and here.

  13. I was at both nights of the Manchester gigs and Hemispheres was a train wreck in the ‘Armageddon’ section because Lifeson’s Roland Guitar Synth refused to behave. The Spirit of Radio track that is currently available sounds great.

  15. From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it’s different. Consider again that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is the only world known, so far, to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment, the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known. Carl Sagan - 1994

  17. Oblivious fuckwits at the gym who treat equipment as their personal media station. Seriously. I did ten sets on the leg press and the same dude was on the leg extension the whole time, texting. And then he acted all offended when I asked to work in with him. Dude, I have four total sets left in this goddamn leg workout; go home and text on the couch. And I am lifting more than he is!

  18. I'm still having a hard time with this. I was in 9th grade (1983) when someone handed me a cassette tape of Neil's drum solo at that time. I was a drummer in the marching band at school and was a Steve Smith fan. This guy in the drum line says, "here, listen to this." It was Neil. I was blown away. I have been a fan ever since. Only saw them twice - in the 2000's. I really feel this loss like a lot of you do because even though I didn't know him personally, he's part of my growing up and adult years. He was a big influence on me in many ways. What a loss. I departed from atheism a few years ago and became an Eastern Orthodox Christian. We believe in praying for the dead, especially within the first 40 days after passing, and so this is really all I can do right now. The world was a better place for having had Neil in it and I will miss him. I pray for his family and friends.

  19. The songs on the first album are basic so having them re-recorded with Neil would serve no purpose. It would be like asking Picasso to do something with crayons and fingerpaints.

  20. Yep. The first album is Lee-Lifeson-Rutsey. A lot of Rush fans have a soft spot for that debut album -- it's raw and youthful and loud, and Rutsey is big a part of that. No reason to erase him from Rush's history. Alex and Geddy aren't like Eddie Van Halen and the way he's treated Michael Anthony in recent years. We have several live versions of a few of those debut album songs with Neil on drums, and that's good enough.

  21. No need to add Neil to the first album. It was a part of the history of the band. Don't re-create history.

  29. This is NOT worth the money that they are charging. My god for similar money check out other bands boxsets and what they include. yes they could make it right by providing a site exclusively for downloads of live concerts and videos. But yes secure everything Rush has ever done. Reach out to Rush fans and collectors. Create a great archival department digging into every rumor and getting it out there for fans. What a disservice.

  37. You mean this list? https://www.nypl.org/blog/2012/11/05/neil-peart-reading-list You could always try posting something to "Turn the Page/What Are You Reading" to see if anyone would be interested in discussing any of these books. I've read 20 of the authors listed; some I enjoyed, others I didn't. From the NP books that I've read, I'm surprised that Dos Passos didn't make the list. (But then again KJA had 3 listings, so there obviously wasn't any room. :P )

  38. It's a shame that you have an issue with those of us who think KJA is a hack and glommed on to Neil's popularity to write a series of substandard books which only serve to diminish the legacy of Peart. #endrant

  40. I saw Jojo Rabbit the other day. I actually liked it better than Marriage Story. The ending was kinda sad. I found out that Scarlett Johansson has been smoking since she was 15. That's why she has such a deep, husky voice. She also hates being called Scar Jo by bloggers. She said it sounds lazy, flippant and violent. I thought it made her sound like a hip hop act.
