  1. It's because the songs were on the radio all the time and it really brought the band into the public after a long slide into relative obscurity. Rush fans liked the idea of being part of a cult band type atmosphere, and they were pissed that everyone could get into Dreamline and Ghost of a Chance and that these new poseurs didn't know the real Rush. this has NOTHING to do with why rush fans "dislike" the album. I don't recall this album being hugely popular at the time.. Like all of a sudden, Rush were as popular as Aerosmith or somethin Rush had lost a lot of fans in the synth era, and RTB was the first album to go platinum since PoW, and it was the first Rush album to have 3 top 10 singles on mainstream radio (and the only with 4 top 15 songs on mainstream radio). You can argue that the album isn't good, but you can't argue that it wasn't popular. I know you like to quote album sales for RTB. However, at that time in '91, ABSOLUTELY NONE of my college friends, classmates, or acquaintances EVER mentioned having or liking RTB. They were talking about Metallica's black album, Pearl Jam's Ten, Nirvana's Nevermind, and still talking about Queensryche's Empire which had been released a year earlier (I think). Hell, college kids then even talked a lot more about Tom Petty's new album as opposed to RTB. RTB DID get a fair amount of airplay on MTV that year BUT nobody I knew ever said anything positive about it. Usually, they simply asked me if the album was any good. Just looking at album sales doesn't give a clear picture of how that album was totally viewed. If anything, I think RTB sales benefited from being from a legendary hard rock band (even though the album wasn't really hard rock) when hard rock was popular and strong

  3. This was my first favourite, when I was seven! They did Xanadu on that album too? I love Cinderella Man too- have you seen the movie upon which it was based? I didn't want to break Eaglemoons' chops for that one. We are in a zone lately and I don't want a simple miss step on her part to screw it up. You talking about the boxing movie? I somehow don't think you are... :) Geeze Louise, What a mistake to make! I guess I was thinking that Hemispheres is my favorite album but Xanadu is my favorite song. That's my excuse and I'll stick with it. It's alright my second choice would have been Natural Science from Moving Pictures.. :P

  4. My brain would show chocolate, cupcakes, math (only because that's what I've been working on at the moment), Geddy Lee, Rush, cooking, blogging, makeup, wine, Geddy, baseball, my dog, Geddy, and more Geddy and then a bunch of other complicated stuff even I do not want to deal with. Did I mention the Geddy hemisphere? :geddy:

  5. Maybe if we ask really nicely, you know, strike a conversation up with him first, he'll let us play with it...   Oh...you meant his bass... or did you? Oh yes the bass, that's definitely what caught my eyes...certainly nothing else What do you think of his glasses? I think I'm almost more distracted by the glasses than I am by the.......bass.

  6. First off, I believe most of us here don't love Rush unconditionally. We seem to be a rational bunch of fans! That said, I think Rush would have the decency and integrity to hang it up before it's too late. So far, it doesn't seem to be too late.

  7. I think it wasn't that they always bad live, it's more that they had their good days and bad days. They weren't one of those bands where every last note is rehearsed and set in stone. Zeppelin left in lots of space to improvise and go off on tangents...the end result was that sometimes it really really worked and was magical, and sometimes it sucked donkey balls

  13. What? I'm a 30 year drummer and I would say that Neil is playing as good or better than he ever has. He certainly has MUCH more technique than he did 20 years ago. Neil is his own worst critic and will certainly know when he can't do the songs justice. To those saying that Neil's arms and legs will start to give out, have you seen Buddy Rich videos towards the end of his life? The guy still played circles around pretty much anybody. In rock drumming you certainly use more arms and legs, but I don't think a lot of you realize that most of your speed and control in drumming comes from the wrists, fingers, and ankles. It takes a LONG time to develop these but once you do it stays with you pretty much. I will say that Neil could lose just a little speed and reflex when he gets older but there are no signs of it yet. Even Neil's tempos on this tour were fast and smooth compared to like the SnA tour.

  16. Rome, december 5th As the whole world knows, we Italians hate only two things: bad food and taxes. And as your great Benjamin Franklin used to say, dear American readers, one these two is unavoidable. So this afternoon, after leaving Lorraine (who is still smokin' hot!) and the SCOG to practice their dancing number for the Pope - I refuse to put deeper thought into this, or I might become even more insane than I am now - which is due soon, I went back to Testaccio. You see, I couldn't bear the thought of my tax-money going to pay... a turd polisher?? I'm tempted to say we Italians have had even worse jobs, but really, you have to draw the line somewhere. So I checked out that strange fellow, Rugantino Frategiovanni, and sure enough I found him in the midst of his... activity. No shortage of prime material, that's for sure. I did this the Italian way. I offered him a coffee. So we sat in Piazza Navona, and Rugantino (same black clothes, black hat, black gloves) didn't shy away from my questions. «Don't worry - he said - Your tax money is down the gutter but not because of me. I ain't getting a penny for this». «Then why do you do it?». «Well, turns out the dog poop is part of the charm. People don't want to come to Rome and feel like they are in Switzerland, you get what I'm saying? There's no such thing as too clean, not here in the Mediterraneo. We are passionate people, crazy, a little wild, and a little, just a little, dirty. That's what tourists want to find». «Ok, but you're not sowing poop (Dear Francis, I can't believe I actually uttered those words), you are POLISHING it!». «That's because it doesn't have to look TOO dirty. It's a fine line, you know? A little is ok. Too much is too much». «But who gave you this... this task?». «I volunteered. I went to the Mayor office and told my story. I've had a lot of experience polishing turds in the USA». «Whaaaa.... You already did... this??». «Actually there was a time, my boy, when me and my socio (that's "associate" for you, my dear readers) would roam the USA putting Steppenwolf to shame, polishing turds like there was no tomorrow». «So you were not alone?». «Nah. Actually, he taught me all about it. I was just a freaked-out roadie, working for Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead, but I used to drop too many amplifiers. So I ended up on the side of the road, till this guy picked me up». «You must be grateful to him». «Well, yes and no. We had this business, but he was very strong-headed. Very opinionated. So we parted ways, and I came back here». «And you never heard from him again?». «Bah. There was a time when I would receive packages. There was all sorts of s*it inside, and always, always Michael Jackson's new album, with a Post-It note saying 'I wrote this!', 'I wrote that!'. Insane s*it». «Wait... Michael Jackson... What... what was your associate's name?». «Ah, who remembers... he wanted to be called Goober, or Goobs... You know, those were the Timothy Leary years, if you get what I say». «And now... you are forced to polish turds in Rome to get a living?». «What are you, braindead? I told you I ain't getting nothing! I have my savings! I made a fortune in America. I'm a millionaire! I could buy this bar and the whole of this Piazza. I'm just doing it for the City, for the tourists, for the image of Italy!». Indeed, dear readers, the Lord works in mysterious ways. How was I to know that, just by meeting some crazy bum in Testaccio, I would end up even more entangled in Goober's shady web of folie? Is there no end to his legacy? How long has this been going on? Just how deep do these roots go? The only one with some answers seems to sit on Pietro's throne. And you just can be sure we'll be there.

  17. Well, Alex plays his 355 at least once every show (This tour it was for Far Cry). Neil isn't going back. He's happy with what he is using now. The great thing about DW is that they make a solid, workhorse drum. An older kit will not be nearly as reliable. Besides, he doesn't even own his old drum kits. They were all given away. So, he'd have to get a different old school drum kit to use and it wouldn't really be authentic. But, it doesn't matter what equipment they use. So long as they're having fun. Other things that don't matter: What setlist they choose. What videos they show. What stage props they use. What clothes they wear. Their hair styles. What does matter: That they're having fun, and that they're playing music! :rush:

  18. Every time I told my family something I wanted to do/be their response would be "that's hard". At the rink where my boys play I always hear, "It's not like these kids are ever going to the NHL.". Well... why the hell not? My son is 4!?! A few months ago a father of one of the kids gave me that line and followed it up with, "Do you realize that only 1 in every 3,000 kids even plays Division I hockey? Our kids have no shot." My response was, "Well, you have to subtract from that 3,000 number every kid who's father told him he had no shot so he stopped trying, right?". Daggers were shot out of his eyes but I was dead serious. I will never tell my kid he is so good he will play in the NHL but I am definitely not the guy who will tell him he won't. What I will tell him is exactly how hard he has to work to get there. My parents thought the only way to succeed in music was by being a rock star. While that was the ultimate dream, music surrounds us all day every day. Somebody is writing and performing it. Why not me?

  22. The "hung-like-an-infant" thing: I usually think that about guys who have jacked their pickups so far off the ground they just barely clear bridges and overhangs, put tires on that look better suited to a combine harvester (complete with shocks and struts as thick as one of Rosie O'Donnell's thighs), and have barely-legal mufflers. Also don't forget the stadium-lighting on the roof and grill. Serious compensation going on there. That only applies to the ones out on the road - monster truck rallies are where they belong.

  23. Back on point: There are like 8 songs or Staples that should expect to fine their way onto the set list of any RUSH concert. It just doesn't feel like a RUSH concert without at least six to seven of their so called Staples: (Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Limelight, 2112 O/T, Freewill, Subdivisions, Closer to the Heart & YYZ). They usually play about 26 songs so this leave another 19-20 songs they could pick and choose from. Fortunately or Unfortunately to some, depending how you look at it, their last two albums have had plenty of good material to chose from. Hence, the lack of older songs in the set list. Regardless, RUSH still provide a varied set list. S & A and TMT was jammed with plenty of gems and great songs as was the CA Tour. Between the last two tours, only 7 songs were repeated. {Caravan, Far Cry, Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, YYZ, The Spirit of Radio and 2112 OT.} That means they played 19 different songs on the CA tour than the TMT. If that's not changing things up, I don't know what is. Somehow I have a felling that the next tour, other than the aforementioned Staples the bulk of the set list will be devoted to mostly never played songs, Instrumentals and post RTB stuff. Just a hunch! :codger:

  25. Why is that surprising? The production on MP blows away CA as well. Production just doesn't seem to be high on Rush's priority list these days. It is kind of head scratching so I see what you're saying. Man no joke. The whole sonic experience with MP is awesome. Love how that album sounds.

  28. I much prefer remixes as opposed to remasters. The mastering process should only be done once; however, mixing can be done in a variety of different ways that the possibilities are nearly endless! :D Random musical thought...well, this is an interesting one. I work as a courtesy clerk (read: bagger) in a grocery store and have been employed there for about give or take three weeks. I was about to get off of an eight hourr shift and a woman came to the lane I happened to be working. She was on Ohio WIC, which stands for Women, Infants, and Children. It's a food program that specializes in helping needy families (or is supposed to, at least) get their children healthy foods. She presents the checks and food to the cashier, everything is going normal. She turns away for a second and one of the checks goes missing. Not too soon after that happens, an argument starts between the cashier and the woman, with the latter accusing the former of stealing the check (which was for a gallon of milk and a dozen eggs). After five minutes of arguing, I finally pipe up "I'll pay for your eggs and milk, miss". So, true to my word, I pay for what I said I would pay for. By the end of it all, she's crying. When I came home, the first song that came on my iPhone was "The Garden" by Rush, and I was particularly struck by the lyrics: "The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect/The way you live, the gifts that you give/In the fullness of time/It's the only return that you expect". And it was in this moment, that I knew I had not only done something ordinarily "good" that night, I had done something that probably meant the entire world over to someone. I did something that meant too much to express in words to this woman, and it took a Rush song for me to realize that. I realize I had done something good, but nothing on the level which I have just described. It's an incredible feeling, and I haven't come off that high for days. I hope I never do. That's my random music thought.

  29. At work today we had a Christmas event with cake, decorations and 'glühwein'. Lots of people coming by and after that we went to a restaurant where I tasted Confit de Canard for the first time, had some beers and a few drinks - free of charge. Tomorrow there's a storm coming in so nobody's coming in for work. What's not to love? :D

  34. It's the slowest day of the year thus-far at work so I'm going to spend some more time elaborating on this. It's his eyes. It's the beautiful shade of green and the brown that surrounds his pupil when you look up close and they aren't covered by glasses, it's the unique shape and tilt of them. It's his smile and the way his eyes light up when he's laughing because Alex has said something funny. It's his gorgeous masculine jawline. It's his nose. Yes, his nose, that beautiful huge proboscis and the way he sticks it into a wine glass to take a sniff before tasting as he explores one of his favorite passions. It's his skin, the beautiful ivory/porcelain shade of it. The gorgeous head of unnaturally dark unruly curls on him and the ears that stick out just a tiny bit. And yes, the body that at age 60 has no business looking as good as it does. It's baseball (for me). I love a man that loves baseball. Not football, not soccer, hockey or basketball. A man that enjoys the old-time sport that is baseball will always catch my attention. It's knowing that he's been with, and built a family with the same woman for more than 35 years. It's the way he respects others when he talks to them and the soft-spoken voice that still carries a soul-vibrating deep undertone. It's seeing him bring his Mom to the RRHOF induction. It's his love of travel and art. He's just really f***ing adorable.

Hey, if you're ever in the US and make your way west, loo me up. Tahoe is a great place to hike around! Some years ago my ex and I went out and bought some hiking boots because we were planning to go to Sweden and hike. We took them out for a "test" one day, walking from downtown to the airport 9 miles out. Seriously, my feet was hurting so bad and was all bloody from blisters but I bit my tongue (was probably acting tough ;) ) and when we got home I didn't touch my boots for weeks. One day I tried them on and they just fit perfectly. But walking 18 miles the first time with them was probably not my brightest idea :P With winter coming soon it's time to use them again :)

  38. I never said anything similar to that. Tom Sawyer and other hits are played so often I was wondering if they needed to be played when the majority of people at Rush concerts are usually die hard fans. Actually, I'm pretty sure that the majority at Rush concerts is made up of casual Rush fans who have greatest hits compilations, semi-serious Rush fans who have a few of the albums, friends of die-hard Rush fans who have been convinced to come along and give the band a chance, classic rock fans who like to see all the old acts that are still playing, people who enjoy rock shows and are out to have a good time, and other assorted folk who want to hear the songs they know, not deep cuts from albums most people don't even know about. Rush probably does have MORE die-hards in their audience than most bands from their era, and certainly enough of those to support them in continuing a career at some level, but it is definitely the seekers of Tom Sawyer and The Spirit Of Radio who make these big tours and fancy productions financially viable. I, for one, am grateful to them! Rush is a polarizing band. I've never met a single soul who liked a few songs but not the rest. It's either "Yeah Man I F*ckin love Rush!" Or it's "Aw man I F*ckin hate Rush!" As I've said previously in the thread, I don't know how anybody can justify going to see a 2+ hour show when they might know 4 songs tops, especially currently when a lot of newer material is played. For instance, I'm not a huge fan of the Stones, but firstly: I would get bored hearing Satisfaction, Start me up, Paint it Black and Miss you. I know them too well and wouldn't WANT to hear them live. Secondly If I'm not a stones fan but like a few of their songs, WHY would I even go to a stones show? Hell, even if I had the money and the time I still wouldn't go because I have little interest in watching a two hour concert of a band I'm not really a fan of. This applies to pretty much any rock band.
