  2. This was my first Rush show. Saw it with my mother and big brother, and it was an experience I will cherish the rest of my life.

  3. So you've joined the club of fools? Good :eyeroll: Why? Because lyrics don't necessarily influence if I think a song is good or bad? I love Sigur Rós and I have no friggin' idea what the lyrics mean, in fact, sometimes the lyrics mean nothing. I love Yes and Jon Anderson can sometimes write the most pseudo-intellectual/spiritual lyrics ever. But, both bands write great melodies. That's the key. Another example, I love the album The Indestructible Beat of Soweto and I have no idea what the songs are about. I love Paul McCartney's "Let 'Em In". The lyrics are infantile. I love Dylan and the guy can sometime tend to ramble on in a very pretentious way.

  4. I like Stone Temple Pilots, but I always got the impression that Scott Weiland was more concerned with being a rock star than being a musician. He's written some good melodies and lyrics, but he's strictly a B-list rock star, at best.

  5. Hi all, Thanks for all your compliments :) And here's a couple of extra Ziggo Dome pics ;) http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3717/8937068883_08aa8a1795_c.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5338/8937695904_bd2f2601db_c.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3714/8937069199_7353238cea_c.jpg

  7. Let's see if I can predict how this epic will play out. Two minutes of atmospheric noise accompanied by an answering-machine message that sounds all creepy but is really about making cookies. Two minutes of palm-muted riffing played on the third, fifth, and sixth frets as Maynard grumbles about emotional subjects like violence on TV. Two minutes of a screechy Adam Jones solo that sounds like every other screechy Adam Jones solo. Two minutes where they get really quiet for "atmosphere." Four minutes of one sludgy riff played over and over again. Four minutes of a Danny Carey electronic drum solo that sounds like one of those pre-programmed beats on an old Casio keyboard. Two minutes of a screechy Adam Jones solo that sounds like every other screechy Adam Jones solo. Two minutes of the same power-chord driven finale they've been rehashing since Pushit. There we have it: a surefire Hemispheres slayer. Can't wait!

  9. Blizzard to The Ultimate Sin for me :D-13: you dont really need anything after diary as far as I'm concerned...however, you could've put all the good post-randy ozzy tunes on one great album, and call it greatest hits or something Still the Jake stuff comes out now and again. Forget Zakk and his torturous squealing, no fukkin way...unlistenable and way overrated imo while the Jake years are virtually forgotten about now. Yeah appologies for the thread derail, couldn't help it.

  15. All I'm going to say is that CA is a concept album, and BU2B2 is part of that concept. It's not meant to be a standalone Rush hit. It may be unnecessary "musically", but it's not unnecessary to the overall story that the album is trying to convey.

  19. Poison on the other had has done some songs that are darn good, plus they rock live. I have seen them live 4 times and they have always been real good. Their "LIve, Raw & Uncut" DVD really rocks. One good song after another. Ok, now you're just being silly. Um, no. Actually I was being serious. I am not saying that they have written anything remotely close to thought provoking lyrics or (to my ear) complex music. Far from it. They are just a very good bar band. But that's part of what makes them fun to listen to and sing along with (although in my case most folks don't really want to be around me when I try to sing. Heck i don't like listening to myself trying to sing - that's part of the pleasure of concerts, I can sign along and never inflict my voice on anybody - including myself!!!). That being said, with songs to sign (or howl) along with like "Nothing but a Good Time" "Fallen Angel", "Ride the Wind", "Every Rose has its Thorn", "Talk Dirty to Me" & "I Wont Forget You" they can be a blast live. Esp. if you have a beer or two and some cheap lawn seats. Seem them with Quite Riot opening for them - good show (both bands). Saw them opening for Motley Crue - kicked Crue's backside. Saw them twice with Def Leopard. Both of which were fine shows. Both bands rocked live (another reason to like DL over ACDC - my one ACDC show was good but not in the same league as the DL shows I have seen). I am certain a few folks will be sickened by that last statement!!! Glad I made you laugh. I figured I might make some folks spew.

  25. Worst name ever for any product, though. Had the marketing team done even a modicum of research on the word "wen", they'd have said, "eewww, yuck" and picked an alternative. (A "wen" is a skin boil or big whompus cyst, fyi). That's my theory and I'm stickin' to it!

  26. Thank you, that's much more like it. I really don't know how someone can say happy birthday and then bring up vapor trails. "Happy" & "Vapor Trails" in the same sentence is a true oxymoron. :P Regardless, thanks everyone for the happy birthday wishes! I now have over 40 facebook happy birthdays to respond to - yikes! :P

  27. Great post, goob. As I relative newbie to TRF (1+ years ... woohoo!) I found your post very informative. I'm not really surprised. It seems to me (I could live my life) that the substance of TRF really hasn't changed over the years because the same sorts of people continue to be drawn to the band. Yes, they've achieved quite a bit of mainstream acceptance in the last few years, but at the core, it really is the music and the three men who make it that draws us together. To all of us who've laid in a dark room with headphones on listening to Cygnus X-1 at volumes not helpful to the human ear. :haz: To all of us who recognize it as the music of our lives.

  31. Poor man! If this isn't a classic case of someone suffering from Rushitis, I don't know who is. I know I have a bottle of Benny Rush's mercury laden laxatives around here somewhere...perhaps this will help Mr. Xanadu.Gangster has the right idea. Get thee to a deprogrammer! And fast. Come to think of it, anyone that would choose this motley trio of wanna-be musicians/singers over Paris is in desperate need of one too.

  35. Yeah and Clockwork Angels isn't like other band's 40+ years albums which only contains about 1 or 2 good songs. They have 10 great tracks on it! :rush: :haz: :rush: I think you forgot how to count. There are 12 tracks on Clockwork Angels. No I haven't! Please read again. I said 10 Great tracks on Clockwork Angels. Not 10 Tracks Clockwork Angels had . I know the English language can be difficult at times, but until I consider BU2B2 and Wish them Well as (Great Tracks). I won't revise my statement, until then sir! ! I'm saying all 12 tracks are Great.

  36. Wow, I used to have everything by them on cassette until I stopped buying cassette tapes. I had everything from Rush through Counterparts on cassette - I probably still have most of those actually. I guess it's a question of what was the last one made. I just looked online, and they exist for T4E and VT, but I don't know (and doubt) if they exist for S&A and CA. In terms of live albums, not sure what the last one made was.

  39. tl;dr Oh, ok, i read most of it. Let me give you some of the best advice someone ever gave me on TRF. Break up your megaposts into shorter paragraphs - much more likely to get read if it isn't one monster paragraph... and while people are talking about ear fatigue, that retina-searing green gave me serious eye fatigue! OK sorry for the green font . I was trying something new . and for those who find my post too tedious to read . here is a summary . I am a old Rush fan . I miss the synthesizers. Ged said he cant do nothing about losing fans through the eras . I probably was never gonna like the Nik era Rush .If Nik produces the next cd I'm not even gonna bother listening . And finally I think Rush wanted to break up years ago but fans keep them touring . That's as simple as I can spell it out . I missed the synthesizers intensely for a long time, but it was only because when I first joined TRF in 2005 there was only 1 post-synth era album I enjoyed, and that was Counterparts. Now that there are three of them; Counterparts, S&A and Clockwork Angels, I'm happy that they've redeemed themselves and gotten back to putting out some great material. No, they don't have the consistency they had from 1974-1987 where there were practically no bad songs, but at least they've put out two great (or almost great) albums in a row, even if we do have to wait years in between them. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. And sorry man for being harsh - it wasn't too tedious to read, it's just that one enormous paragraph tends to make people feel overwhelmed and they don't make it all the way through.

  40. I also think it's a matter of managing expectations. There is just so much music available these days that it's unrealistic to expect the same impact of Hemispheres, Dark Side, Powerslave, A Night at the Opera etc. from any new release.

  42. All I can say to the OP is thank you for taking some of the heat off of me as being one of the more hated people on TRF at the moment for their unpopular opinions! :P Seriously though, while the album is far from sonically perfect, it's far more than sufficient for me and I rarely listen to it and wish it sounded better. And besides that, CA is their best album since the 80's. Outside of one VERY short unnecessary track and one other weaker track, it's all pretty outstanding. No, it's not Hemispheres, but it's a great album - far better than anything I could have expected in these latter days. Too bad you're not enjoying it...

  46. Show Don't Tell from Presto was the song that got me into the band, so I damn well DO think of it when I think of Rush Not enough variety on Clockwork Angels? Listen to Caravan, Halo Effect, 7COG, Wreckers and Wish Them Well... none of them sound like each other. MP, Hemi, and Signals IMHO from your "golden" period are each far more uniform in tempo/style than CA is. As for being stuck-in-the-past whiner #79476 to bleat "I want Terry Brown baaaack waaaaa :boohoo: ", Rush writes the songs, not their producers. Bringing Brown back would not result in Rush writing "Cygnus X-1 Book XIII". And in conclusion:
