I suspect the giant sandwich and sugary drink and cookie are not going to help matters (well, it solved the old "I'm hungry" problem). I've tried listening to music, and I've tried reading, and I've tried lying still with my eyes closed and thinking about stuff. (I can't not think about stuff--clearing my mind is not something I've ever been able to do). I've tried melatonin. The thought of warm milk makes me want to gag. I don't want to use sleeping pills.

If you must eat something, eat MEAT. Nothing with any carbs or sugar. No breads, crackers, cereals of any kind. And, of course, no soda pop or beer. Take some aspirin or ibuprophen.

And take a break from any computer or tablet screens. The white-blue light from the screens tells your brain that it's daytime. It possible, get some reddish light in your room or house.

If you're gonna watch TV, turn on C-Span. That should work!

A) chemically alter my brain (this is the best bet, usually)

B) pull an all-nighter (the result of this is never too good)

C) ignore all my impulsive tendencies and stay away from "screens" (this is nearly impossible to do for over an hour)

D) none of the above (a D is just required)

Advil PM. Simple but effective...

I know you said you don't want to take sleeping pills, but have you ever tried melatonin? It's natural. Your body produces it naturally. It helps me when I have trouble falling asleep.

I take Benadryl (the ingredient in things like Advil/Excedrin PM) when I really cannot sleep. It allows me a good night's sleep, plus helps with any allergy issues I might be feeling.

No drugs whatsoever for me. I'm rarely sick and I have to at least partially attribute that to NOT taking medicine (except for something like the flu). I couldn't tell you the last time I've taken aspirin. Anyway, your body will sleep when it's ready. And if you're patient, it won't be long. You may have one crappy day following your night of restless (or zero) sleep but chances are that the next night you'll sleep like a baby.

The more you obsess about it, the worse it will be.

Someone mentioned aspirin already. It does help.

But when you find yourself tossing and turning, just tell yourself that even if you can't sleep, it is still good that you are laying down and can at least rest. This will take the stress off of trying to fall asleep.

Drugs aren't the answer. Nor is drinking.

I try not to obsess, and I agree about needing the physical the rest. It`s just that, for me, the bed starts to become uncomfortable after a while. I get hot, then chilled, and lying on my back is no good, etc. etc. and then I think my tossing and turning might be disturbing my wife even if she is asleep. I should probably see a sleep specialist or something. My wife also believes that I have misophonia, and to some degree I think she`s right, especially when it comes to repetitive sounds. I fixate on those things. She tried a white noise machine out on me, and it got to the point where I could tell when the thing was going to come back around to the beginning and I would just lie there and wait for it. However, it`s not the only cause of sleepnessness for me. Sometimes ya just can`t sleep.

Between Thursday to Sunday afternoon I read three Stephen King novels, all in the 400-600 page range - I had the time . . .

I use a loop of fan sound for white noise. No beginning and end. I would do the same thing as you if it were a repeating pattern.

This. When has that not worked?

I find sometimes that if I read something I really want to I start to doze off shortly after. It's like if I want to stay awake I fall asleep and vice versa. But sometimes there's nothing to do but wait. Beware of what you eat during the day. Keep sugar to a minimum so your body doesn't have too much energy it needs to burn in the evening.

And if you do have energy to burn it's nothing a little hanky-panky time won't cure.

If you do it too much?

It can never be to much!

go for a walk or watch some boring late night tv

Yep. Works for me. I am up a lot in the middle of the night. Was as a kid, too. I enjoy the quiet time, to be honest.

I know all about NOT watching tv before bed BUT Blade Runner puts me to sleep. I like it but I can't help but get sleepy any time I watch it.

It has that mood to it.

Toymaker, I had mixed results with melatonin - mostly disappointing UNTIL I tried liquid melatonin

Melatonin is not a drug, and it actually had beneficial properties

I use this one, and it works like magic:
