Working Man

Anthem

I left out Tom Sawyer, and Spirit Of Radio because of their extended airplay over the years.

Depends. Would you be trying to "break someone in" who wouldn't normally listen to them? .. or just show them what Rush is all about.. Cuz they'd be two different CDs for sure!

greatest hits album with 74-81 stuff. as much as I love the synth era and many of their post-mp records, let's face it - no one jumped on the rush bandwagon after hearing presto and finding it to be a religious experience...

Your certainly right about that!

It would depend on what sort of music the person is into. I'd try to include songs that I think they'll like. But for "all-purpose" discs, I'd just give them the Spirit of Radio greatest hits comp for early stuff and Retrospective 3 for material released later on.

I would just try to pick about 2 of my favorites from each album. And if they don't like them, then that's fine by me.

i would give them 80 minutes of my favorite songs, which would be from their best era anyway 1974-1987. as it turned out, however, as i whittled down to 80 minutes, it ended up being 1974-1982 only as there just wasn't room for more. i had to make some heartbreaking cuts. always start with the best, then if they like it they'll explore further on their own. i'd go with these, though not necessarily in this order:

xanadu

la villa strangiato

tom sawyer

subdivisions

the spirit of radio

limelight

a farewell to kings

lakeside park

YYZ

red barchetta

the trees

closer to the heart

working man

freewill

damn, that 80 minutes went way too fast! i would have LOVED to have room for:

distant early warning

a passage to bangkok

the big money

prime mover

also would have loved 2112 and hemispheres, but too many songs would have had to bite the dust for the full on 20 minute epics. and still i left out SOOOOO many great songs!

EDITED IN:

damn, i forgot armor and sword! and dreamline! and territories! and nobody's hero! and... oh f*ck it, i did my best...

I would probably give them more than 1 CD, too much to cover, 80 mins is not enough.

Working Man (great intro to the band)

In The End (just a great closing track, probably my fave off FBN right now)

2112 (the song that gave them their breakthrough)

Xanadu (it's RUSH)

Closer to the Heart (a shorter, more commercial side to the band)

Cygnus X-1 (one of the last full-on concept pieces)

Hemispheres (here we get a great feeling from the band at the end of their first/second [depends on who you ask] era)

La Villa Strangiato (just about my second favourite instrumental, it beats Suicide & Redemption, but Orion kicks it's butt)

Spirit Of Radio (certainly their more commercial side coming through)

Natural Science (showing that they don't need to exceed ten minutes to have an epic song)

Tom Sawyer (their money making song)

Limelight (one of their more recognised pieces)

YYZ (another great instrumental, showcases everything great about the band outside of the vocals)

Subdivisions (shows they aren't all fantasy or self-centred by writing about the youth of the time)

Between the Wheels (a song that holds a lot of truth today)

Marathon (I get a great feeling from it)

Time Stand Still (I don't know why, I think it was the biggest song from the album)

Bravado (great song)

Test For Echo (a song showcasing the terrible justice system on TV)

One Little Victory (their triumphant return)

Faithless (one of my all-time faves)

The Garden (a hard hitting track, despite being a ballad. Always tugs at my heart and brings a tear to my eye

Put that together over how many discs

I have a friend who say's he likes Rush, but really does not like Rush. He is just trying to be safe.

There is nothing to change his mind. To him, the Stones are god and the Dead is jesus.

Same here. My friend respects them as musicians, she appreciates and recognizes their talent, but the only songs she really knows are Limelight and Driven. She listens to music from old Broadway plays, so Rush just really isn't her style.

The problem is that Rush are way too diverse for most people. Unless they are music snobs like a lot of us, most people are used to a band having the same sound all the time...Rush freaks mainstream folks out

3 disc set, if they just listen to Spirit of Radio collection that's just not gonna cut it, especially since it's just a condensed form of Retrospectives 1 and 2. This gives the listener a feel of how they've progressed through each era as musicians. I basically made a new Retrospective 1-3 but I had fun with this.

1974-1980

1. Working Man

2. Fly By Night

3. By-Tor and the Snow Dog

4. Lakeside Park

5. 2112 Overture/Temples Of Syrinx

6. Closer To The Heart

7. Xanadu

8. Cygnus X-1 Book I

9. Cygnus X-1 Book II

10. The Trees

11. La Villa Strangiato

12. The Spirit Of Radio

13. Freewill

14. Natural Science

1981-1987

1. Tom Sawyer

2. YYZ

3. Limelight

4. Subdivisions

5. The Analog Kid

6. Countdown

7. Distant Early Warning

8. Red Sector A

9. Between The Wheels

10. The Big Money

11. Marathon

12. Territories

13. Time Stand Still

14. Mission

1989-2012

1. Superconductor (shut up, this song is good)

2. The Pass

3. Dreamline

4. Bravado

5. Animate

6. Stick It Out

7. Cold Fire

8. Test For Echo

9. Time And Motion

10. One Little Victory

11. Secret Touch

12. Far Cry

13. Working Them Angels

14. Clockwork Angels

15. Headlong Flight

16. The Garden

When thinking of giving someone a set of tunes from a band I love I'd likely pass on a disc of tunes I would consider a way of showing why these guys are badass! As well as something I would dig and play myself.

Anthem

Circumstances

Natural Science

YYZ

Analog Kid

Manhattan Project

Stick It Out

Armor And Sword

Headlong Flight

That should work.

My friend fancy's himself as a rock and roll authority. Knows every name in every band and can recall dates like a historian.

Every now and then we go out and get a little tipsy and that ends up at my house with a joint and some music.

Good thing its my house.

The whole time we/I are listening, he always has something to say. Like "You don't have a Grateful Dead DVD's or CD's? Or Stones live concerts?

Nope. I have lots of music and we do have a few things in common. Like beer and pot.

But we are miles apart on music. I am afraid if I were to play anything Yes ever did, he might ask to hear Bad Company instead.

It really is a shame as he could be a very good Rush fan. I think he was turned off by Rush because of Geddy's voice. He did make a comment that once he thought Geddy was a "female".

My wife laughed at him.

Haters gonna hate.

Last cuts: Analog Kid, Earthshine, Far Cry, Witch Hunt, Seven Cities Of Gold, and it does feel somehow wrong not to have Limelight in there, but I can't find a song to cut to make room for it.
