Off the top of my head, here's a list of 10 essential CDs to keep in your car for any mood:

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper*

The Stones - Let it Bleed*

Sabbath - Paranoid

Van Halen - s/t*

AC/DC - Back in Black

Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic

Def Leppard - Pyromania

Nirvana - Nevermind

Rush - Moving Pictures

Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz

*Not my favorite by the band, but the album by them I suppose is more universally beloved than my favorite.

What, No Porcupine Tree?

I do think Rumors is an essential listen. It may not be as heavy as a lot of our preferences, but it’s one of the most important record albums of all time, and with one of the most interesting stories behind it. It’s one of those things you need to hear for context more than anything else.

Rumours is in the same vein as Moving Pictures for me: the most famous and most beloved album by the mainstream that I love from start to finish.

I think Rumours is one of the GREATEST pop/rock albums ever written.

Same with Carole King's Tapestry.

Tapestry kicks ass.  so much ass that i really don't think anything she did after moves the needle at ALL.

Odd how much this album outshone EVERYTHING else she ever did

i mean nothing after is bad but it DEFINITELY feels like she used everything great in her tank on Tapestry.

Can't argue too much with that list. All solid choices. I own 7 of the 10. Great records!

I have six of the ten that are on that list, but I don’t care, really. I agree it’s slanted too heavily in favor of one particular era (even at the same time that I’ll agree the first half of the 1970s had SO much going on, in rock and roll).

8 out of 10, but I hardly listen to any of them any more.

Looks like an idea for a poll . . . what would TRF's top ten essentials be?  Too much math for me, but I'd be interested to see the result.

I'm the same, but which two don't you have?

I'm going to guess The Last Waltz and Sticky Fingers

Can’t be Sticky Fingers. Treeduck bought the whole Rolling Stones discography a couple years ago.

Yeah The Last Waltz is right, but I do have Sticky Fingers, I think I have two different versions in fact.

Yeah it's fun to do that once in a while, but there's not many bands I could do that with now and actually be happy with the final haul.
