I worry that those who still held out hope for a Rush reunion are going to be particularly stricken. Just today I was wondering if something like that could happen since it's been a few years. I figured it would hinge on how Neil was feeling.

New World Kid Posted January 10, 2020 Posted January 10, 2020 (edited) As a young teen growing up in the early 2000's, Rush caught my attention for a lot of reasons. I eventually decided to take up the drums because of Rush and, so, Neil specifically. That eventually lead to me trying to make a career out of music for the first half of my 20s. Playing in bands, giving lessons, etc. Eventually, the economic realities made me give that up. But I never gave up Rush. And what kept me coming back wasn't the drumming. It was the lyrics. They always seemed to resonate with me in ways that no other band does. We're only immortal for a limited time. Neil knew that better than most. I'm 51 and have been listening to Rush, going to a bunch of live shows, drawing inspiration from Neil's lyrics, and reading his books for most of my life. Of course, we were not friends, and I did not know him. But, the grief is real. I have lost a loved on. Hugs all around to you guys, and crank up some of his badass drumming. 9

The cause was brain cancer, which he had been quietly battling for three years, according to Elliott Mintz, a spokesperson for the Peart family. A representative for the band confirmed the news to Rolling Stone. Peart was widely considered one of the best drummers in rock history, with a flamboyant yet utterly precise style. He joined singer-bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson in Rush in 1974, and his virtuosic playing and literate lyrics – which drew on Ayn Rand and science fiction, among other influences – helped make Rush one of the key bands of the classic-rock era. A rigorous autodidact and a gifted writer, he was also the author of numerous books. “Neil is the most air-drummed-to drummer of all time,” former Police drummer Stewart Copeland told Rolling Stone in 2015. “Neil pushes that band, which has a lot of musicality, a lot of ideas crammed into every eight bars — but he keeps the throb, which is the important thing. And he can do that while doing all kinds of cool shit.” Rush finished their final tour in 2015; Peart was done with the road and eager to spend more time with his wife, Carrie Nuttal, and daughter Olivia. Our heros are all going to pass eventually, but I was not ready for this. I'm not even sure what I feel. Stunned...... 2

I can barely imagine what his family is going through. All I can say is, emulate his example. Live life to the fullest. 4

Running Rebel Posted January 10, 2020 Posted January 10, 2020 Been a long time since I was around, but I have many great friends from this forum who I know are sharing my grief at this sad news. For me and many others Neil authored the soundtrack of our lives. It’s added sadness knowing he has a young daughter that he idolized and in which wanted to spend time. I was talking the last few days about him having just bought tickets for the The Rush Project (cover band) in my hometown. I was questioning for a while why he wasn’t writing blogs or books. I am shocked and deeply saddened. If the measure of a life is love and respect, then truly he was the treasure to us all. His influence will live on. 2
