oghond2112
Given how good friends the members of RUSH are in real life, I'm pretty shocked that Neil hasn't written a song regarding platonic relationships yet. (Well, there's "Entre Nous," but that can be interpreted romantically, too.) Or am I missing something?
Ancient Ways
Al and GED are clearly great friends. Are they really that good of friends with Neil? I’m not so sure.

edhunter
Since Neil didn't write a lurrv song till Cold Fire I consider all his lyrics to be platonic. It was long after midnight, when we got to unconditional love.... I can only imagine what Geddy thought when he read that for the first time. Neil doesn't do sex well. goose
Since Neil didn't write a lurrv song till Cold Fire I consider all his lyrics to be platonic.Neil love songs...hmmm. Being hyper-analytical, he writes relationship songs more than love songs. Entre Nous, Chemistry, Ghost of a Chance, and Cold Fire come to mind. Also Alien Shore and - :gads: - Speed of Love. Fridge
What about Tears?...it's quite clearly a romantic ballad about love and loss, particularly the "my body was weak, for you...the truth" line.

Are they really that good of friends with Neil? I’m not so sure. i think that all three were probably closer friends in the earlier days but then they grew apart especially as neil started to lose interest in music and regard it more as a way of making money than a calling while meanwhile al and ged were still just as passionate about music as they ever had been. Alph Seeker
As fans we know quite well that Rush songs go over the heads of mere mortals and the unwashed. As such, to gain even deeper understanding, a true fan must dig even deeper and be capable of gaining insight from the nuances of what is NOT written in order to find platonic references in Rush songs. This is why it's: Leave that thing alone, not: Leave my thing alone.
JARG
How could Neil ever hope to improve on the genius lyrics in Take A Friend? I dunno, maybe he tried, and when he submitted the lyrics, Ged and Al thought back to the debut album and said "Been there, done that".

Lucas
On a related note, and at the risk of beating a dead horse 'cause I say this all the time, but I feel that Geddy wrote Different Strings about his relationship with Alex I would have loved to see Dan Rather whip that question out .. not that Geddy would have given a straight answer . . LeaveMyThingAlone
Since Neil didn't write a lurrv song till Cold Fire I consider all his lyrics to be platonic. It was long after midnight, when we got to unconditional love.... I can only imagine what Geddy thought when he read that for the first time. Neil doesn't do sex well. No, no he doesn't. But I also wouldn't expect him to just because he had been married so long and I'd guess was probably faithful or very close. And I can attest to the fact that when your marriage gets into double digits, "getting to unconditional love after Midnight" is about as steamy as it gets at that point in a marriage.

I've been married 13+years. There is absolutely no unconditional love after about 10pm or so...
