  1. If only there was a television channel that would live up to it's name instead of playing to the lowest class of people with intellectually stimulating programs like Jersey Shore or Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta maybe those bands would be more successful.

  2. DePalma's best and my favorite twist ending in any movie. Die Hard one and two Love how Bedellia triggers "dickless" by being on his plane in part 2. He learned nothing from that punch.

  3. I just think the whole bonus track thing has overstayed it's welcome by many years. When every album has bonus tracks what is special about having them?

  4. Most of the streaming is older music because it's been around for decades and has had many years for people to become familiar with it and like the music. That doesn't mean new music is out of ideas. Bands today don't have radio and MTV to rely on to become huge like bands years ago did. A lot of bands today have to grow organically through consistently releasing good music and touring a lot. It takes bands longer these days for people to become familiar with them. Especially in rock and metal. So of course older, more familiar music is going to get more listeners. But there is still newer music that get really good numbers on the streaming services. But due to times being different people actually may have to put a little bit of effort into finding the new music that is out instead of always falling back on the old reliable stuff.

  5. How are those books? Particularly the second two? After listening to the guys on the Something for Nothing podcast interview him, it really put me off buying them. The guy hates everything from Signals through Test for Echo. It really made me question how he could write an objective history of the band, given that he has no interest in half their albums. (And especially because the albums he hates are the ones I love the most.)

  6. I don't understand bonus tracks. Either put the songs on the album or don't. Absolutely pointless.

  7. Agreed...I enjoyed the early chapters much more as they tended to focus on the importance of the music and what drove him to become the musician he ended up being. His writing about his parents was very poignant also. I think I enjoyed Martin Popoff's books better.

  8. Going for some holiday themed stuff. Listening to The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle (Holmes), and for laughs the Santa Land Diaries (Sedaris) and if I can manage it again A Christmas Carol narrated by Patrick Stewart. I saw him perform this one man rendition in the 90's and I bought the cassettes and listen to it almost every Christmas. Fantastic. Also reading a quick novella Ghosts and Garlands in a time traveling series by Kelley Armstrong. All short stuff so I can hopefully meet my reading challenge for the year.

  9. I get what you're saying, and it wore thin after a while. That said, the early chapters are great.

  10. About 40 percent through now and still on 2112. Seems like a lot of stuff is not going to get covered. Quickly running out of real estate. Actively not reading because I don't want to finish. Rationing myself to a chapter every once in a while. Somebody needs to get their road crew together and write a book.

  11. After picking it up and putting it down for 2 years, I finally finished Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. It's just a collection of diary entries of him reminding himself of the principles of Stoicism as he understands them. It was interesting, but required a lot of flipping to the end notes and back to understand the context.

  12. We're back like a bad rash! Here is the new album on Bandcamp: https://sloppyfootcowboys.bandcamp.com/album/our-naked-problem "Fishtail" is the most serious song ever, as far as songs inspired by Bass Pro Shops go, so be sure to check it out! :P

  14. As far as I know, contemporary interviews and tour books are the only places Neil ever discussed the recording of studio albums. He rarely mentions them in his books and wasn't given to reminiscing later on...

  18. That's fair. I would get sick of wheezy breezy no-powa malaise V8's eventually as well, even if they sound lovely, and give you a lot of time to experience the sound before incurring legal problems. Had my Miata for just shy of five years now. Might sell it around the end of next year or the spring of 2025. I've had enough times in it, and my body is becoming too old-man-ey for a stick. That thing has been from Rapid City to Crescent City, Salmon ID to St. George UT, and everywhere in between.

  27. Worked from homebody (for part of the day - had to take part of the day off to take dad to the do's). So that gave me a chance to open the moving box's up and whatever came out at random was listened to. First out: The Who - Quadrophenia A classic. Next out of the box: Rush - Hemispheres A decent, middle of the pack Rush album. Next out of the box: Rush - AFTK. Very good album. BTW - Why do I call Hemispheres a middle of the pack album? For me it is just that. Mind you, a middle of the pack Rush album is still a very good album. If I was going to rank Rush's 19 original albums it would be some where in the middle. My top albums would be: 1. 2112 2. Power Windows 3. HYF 4. FBN 5. Presto 6. AFTK 7. S&A My bottom albums would be: 19. VT (the remix - the original mix is almost a different album and would rank at 20) 18. CoS 17. T4E 16. CA 15. RTB CoS I don't care for because of the long songs on it - but it has crept up a bit recently so its pushing to move past T4E. T4E has not aged well plus it has Dog Years and Virtuality - both of which are just bad songs. As for CA & RTB they are almost interchangeable. At its best CA is better than RTB but all of CA before Halo Effect I find to be unlistenable. So that knocks it down below RTB. I can at least listen to all of RTB. So that leaves sort of a middle pack of albums (ST, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, MP, Signals, Grace Under Presure and Counterparts). All of them are good but all have some flaws. Better than what is below them but not as good as the 7 gems above them. Will work from home again tomorrow so I may get to listen to some more albums (before taking dad to another doctor's appointment).

  30. You're the best, Derek! With the list done, I can add a final note. Those two spots, #2 & #1, if I'm truly honest, Cygnus II and La Villa don't own them. In good conscience they've got to be filled by Tom Sawyer and Limelight, as they justifiably mark the pinnacle of the band as musicians and song writers. So there you have it.

  31. I'm just about finished with the book. It's a good enough read but, as I expected, the music itself is pretty much glossed over throughout, some albums not really even getting more than a few sentences. I was hoping for a little more insight on the music creation process and maybe some mentioning of moments of when they were inspired musically when coming up with a song. There isn't a whole lot of that. There's a certain "woe is us" tone at times in the book that bothers me a bit coming from a rich rock star. I understand that Geddy and his bandmates made many sacrifices for their careers. Should I feel bad about that? It's something that is necessary for just about everyone over the course of their lives. When I got to the part about the tragedy of Neil's wife and daughter, I couldn't help but think about people who go through similar situations but don't have the means to take years off travelling the world to try to find the inspiration to work again. That is literally all I could think about while reading those passages. Maybe I find the book a little too "lifestyles of the rich and famous" for my taste.

  37. That Hideous Strength, book three in The Space Trilogy. Perelandra was not as interesting to me as Out of the Silent Planet. It has an interesting conceit, but the plot itself isn't complicated and is very drawn out. I enjoyed intellectual exercise, but I thought it could have been accomplished with 1/3 of the words. That Hideous Strength is a much longer book, and so far seems quite complicated, in comparison.

  39. Perelandra by CS Lewis. It is the second book in his space trilogy. I finished the first with my kids about a year ago, but we moved to Star Wars and then a lot of stories where dogs die and built quite a backlog, so I’ve decided to finish the trilogy on my own.

  40. I love audio books, some series are really better in audio (for me) with the right narrator. I use them to make mundane chores go by faster and it has been a lot of fun over the years, I started listening from cassettes checked out from the library . Audio doesn't always work as well as print, especially in complicated plots but I am glad I have had them to listen to. Some recently I bought just because the author was reading them (mostly non-fiction) like Geddy.

  42. And the absence of the mighty Gary Moore from the top 250 is really shocking. They put, for example, Donita Sparks (L7) on the list, but not Gary Moore or Terry Kath or Allan Holdsworth.
