Turbine Freight
wow some people think humor is a bad thing, interesting i started liking rush more when i realized they had a sense of humor! A sense of humour is fine, commendable really. Only Rush are about as funny as Victorian infant mortality rates.

Disk98
I don't know, but I love it! I've done it at all three shows I attended. It's like a tradition.
ytserush
Audience participation appears to have fully taken hold sometime during the Signals tour when they moved Overture to near the end of the set for the first time ever.
78jazz
I have read some suggestions by those who went that it may have started on the Hemispheres tour. I *thought* it was the next tour, but I would have to dig out a boot to check. I think ytse is correct; if it had not started by then, certainly Signals shows indicate it was happening then. Geddy's Soul Patch
In terms of Rush show traditions, it pales in comparison to the TSOR "Oh Yeeeaahhhhhhhh!"
Lorraine
I always enjoyed Geddy's heys in The Weapon. If you have the bootlegs, you know what I mean.
Self-Indulgence
We didn't do it on the 1980 tour. My next Rush concert was Power Windows('86). WE DID IT!

What about the part after he sings "concert hall" and the crowd cheers loudly...I can see everyone doing that from Day 1. :D

Tony R
wow some people think humor is a bad thing, interesting i started liking rush more when i realized they had a sense of humor! They always had a sense of humour. Lucas is not saying humour is a bad thing merely that Rush's humour is idiosyncratic at best and cringe-inducing at worst. By your rationale any person that didn't think a particular joke was funny would automatically lack a sense of humour. If you think Rush's sketches are humorous well good for you but one isn't being disloyal by not liking them.

Todem
Judging by bootlegs i think it was the HYF tour. Possibly earlier. if i'm remembering correct. it's been a while since i've listened. Mick Exactly the first tour I started hearing and doing it along with the rest of our clubhouse. And if you think it's corny get a life. Geeking up at a Rush show is platinum. We have fun doing it. Rush is corny to begin with......or did you not know that? Slim
I think they were doing it as long ago as 1978. Certainly by the Permanent Waves tour. But I don't remember it happening on the '77 tour.
Grover
They did not play Overture on the Grace Under Pressure tour. The ' hey' was not done in the Moving Pictures shows in Toronto but was done in the Signals shows. I think it was the band that started it. They pause for a fraction of a second which gives the impetus to respond. Also. A guy in my highschool recorded one of the Toronto shows that I was at, and it sounded to me as if there was a bit of canned noise being triggered along with the 'hey- from the crowd. I'm not sure if any drum triggers existed yet, but the boot I heard sounded like there was a short burst of synthesized crowd noise being triggered. PolarizeMe
Didn't even participate in the R40 show. Just sat there.I gave a half-assed "Hey!" with a half-assed fist pump on cue with the "Hey!" on the R40 Tour. The last three times I saw then I was really enthusiastic in doing it cause I was closer to the stage on previous tours, but since I sat far back this time, I didn't feel like using a lot my energy in doing it. I did give a good cheer at the very end of the show though.

gypsy muse
Hard to tell because by the time they started it, they were pretty much done in my book ... safe to say I never liked the HEYs And truth be told, the comedic **** they did onstage later on was another nail for me The roasting chickens, the attempts at humor in the videos, the witch in Witch Hunt - not good I like my Rush like I like my women - odd, articulate, and from outer spaceI didn't like the roasting chickens either. MMCXII
I think the "hey" started when 2112 first arrived at the record company. They said,"HEY! What the fukk is this shit again.."
