Beastie Boys Co-Founder Adam Yauch Dead at 47

Adam Yauch, one-third of the pioneering hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, has died at the age of 47, Rolling Stone has learned. Yauch, also known as MCA, had been in treatment for cancer since 2009. The rapper was diagnosed in 2009 after discovering a tumor in his salivary gland.

Yauch sat out the Beastie Boys' induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, and his treatments delayed the release of the group's most recent album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. The Beastie Boys had not performed live since the summer of 2009, and Yauch's illness prevented the group from appearing in music videos for Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2.

Yauch co-founded the Beastie Boys with Mike "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horowitz in 1979. The band started off as a hardcore punk group, but soon began experimenting with hip-hop. The band broke big with their first proper album, Licensed to Ill, in 1986, and further albums Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication cemented the band as a true superstar act.

In addition to his career with the Beastie Boys, Yauch was heavily involved in the movement to free Tibet and co-organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts of the late Nineties. In 2002, he launched the film production company Oscilloscope Laboratories.

Holy Crap! I saw the Beastie Boys back in 1987 with Murphys Law and Fishbone. What a show!

I was 6 years and started kindergarten when Licensed To Ill came out. It was the 1st album I ever owned at that time. Gonna listen to their albums chronologically. I own all except 5 Boroughs. He's lucky he got to see himself inducted. God, I f-cking hate cancer.

Never was a huge listener of the Beastie Boys but I have tons of respect for them and the contributions they've made. It's always sad and painful to see a big contributor to the music world to pass away at a young age. RIP MCA rose.gif

He also deserves some respect for his activism regarding those "Free Tibet" concerts in the 90s and he also created his own film company called Oscillocsope which distributed the Oscar nominated Messenger which Woody Harrelson was nominated for.

Rest In Peace MCA...

...thank you for making the world a better place.

Not just through music, but also through your activism.

Very sad, I just played Licensed to Ill yesterday and listening to it again now.

Very sad, indeed.

Love the Beasties. Have a fairly decent collection in my music catalog.

So whatcha whatcha whatcha want?

They had an impressive style and beat. I think everyone should check them out. Everyone's bound to like at least one song.

I was in this bar one time and the most unreal thing happened. These guys come in right? I heard gunfire, and one of them yelled "Stick 'em up!". And then another one of them punched the piano player! They demanded all our cash and jewelry. Someone calling himself Mike D took the money, and this guy you're talking about here? MCA? He grabbed the gold. The third one made off with two girls and a beer.

Man, what a night.

RIP, MCA.
