So where are all those people that said the whole thing was a hoax designed to get Trump out and it would miraculously disappear after the election?

Busy preparing statements on how the pandemic is a socialist power grab conspiracy bigger than anti-Trumpism.

This all makes me think of the Dogers' Turnet and the outrage towards him. Each player and coach made a coach to engage in a team sport, a high-risk behavior that all but guarantees the spread of COVID. Outrage towards young, healthy people weighing the risks seems misplaced to me, when my frustration is at an organization that would allow an elderly cancer survivor to put himself in harm's way.

Alarmist, my ass. Read this article and tell me it's alarmist, I dare you.

https://www.theatlan...workers/617091/

There are 3600 new cases a day in Iowa. That's more than double the number in Ontario at the moment, and Iowa has one-fifth the population. That's f***ed. (In the Canadian context, Ontario is doing a really shit job right now.)

If things keep going the way they're going, the American healthcare system is going to collapse sometime around Christmas. There won't be enough nurses and doctors still capable of working by that point to take care of the coming wave of sick people.

I don't believe that to be true at all. We knew that the number of cases would skyrocket as daylight grew short and temperatures dropped (aka "flu season"). The vast number of infected will have little to no symptoms, and fatalities will once again likely be concentrated in communal living facilities.

You didn't even read a word of that article, did you? I shouldn't have expected better...

I guess that makes it the exception that proves your omniscience.

I read the whole thing. Funny that you argue against the premise that the media promote alarmism by linking an article whose content is 90% that very thing. In the middle of the piece, if you stick with it, a reader can get some straight info. Specially, that we know much more about COVID than we did, and that it is much more treatable and manageable at the institutional level. And at the individual level it's fairly simple: Keep distant, keep your hands to yourself, use a mask when in congested public spaces, and if you are high risk, isolate.

Quick useless info update: because of it's microscopic size the total volume of covid-19, that has infected 53 million people, is just a mere 8 ml or 0.2 fluid ounces, about a tea spoon full.

Interesting. Seems like something that small might make it's way through a standard cloth mask, but I'm no scientist.

The director where I work has said that employees may no longer wear cloth masks at work. Either the typical, 3 layer surgical mask or N95 if necessary. There are people I work with who think their god will protect them (their words) or it's not nearly as important as it's being made out to be. There's also at least one person who believes the Chinese developed and spread Corona on purpose.

Guess who they supported for President?

Holy shet, Michigan is almost at 75,000 deaths from covid

From or with?

Here's a link to the CDC with info describing the comorbidities for deaths that have been listed as COVID deaths (confirmed or presumed).

https://www.cdc.gov/...m#Comorbidities

Something else interesting pops up in this link. The CDC advises that because of differences in reporting methods, "Death counts should not be compared across states." If comparisons among states within the same country are invalid, how valid would that make the comparisons being made among different nations altogether?

I certainly hope you aren't implying that we can't trust the numbers coming out of China.

You don't need to travel nearly that far. :)

I see the press still hasn't shifted out of alarmist mode. Another record!!!!!

:eyeroll:

In your opinion, at what point does a newspaper, country, whatever become “alarmist”?

When the tone is absurdly hysterical and intended to spread fear rather than information.

"We need a national mask mandate!!!!"

No, we don't. Governors are quite capable of issuing COVID restrictions and are in fact empowered to do so by law.

I don’t disagree with no national mask mandate. There’s not one here because nearly everyone automatically puts one on. If you don’t then you end up looking like a dick. And sticking out like a sore thumb here isn’t something people generally do. But in the states, how do you get people to wear masks when they need to? Have people been following covid restrictions there? From what I hear from family and friends there, it seems to be “yeah pretty much” or “it’s patchy”.

I did a TRF poll about 6 months ago and the people wearing masks group was at 50% give or take 2% (can’t remember exactly).

I wear them in public indoor places (supermarkets, restaurants till seated, etc). I am also very careful to be distanced and to avoid contact. Other people I know aren't, and they get COVID.

Do you feel that the majority of people are doing what you do?

A majority? Yes. But a minority can spread a virus pretty easily.

I think “majority” wasn’t what I wanted to say as I assumed at least 51% have been doing the things you have. I guess I wanted to ask “What percent do you think...?” In any case, yeah a very small minority can wreak havoc.

Sounds like you read a completely different article than I did, since you completely missed the central premise: treatable and manageable as it may be, a serious case still requires up to two weeks in an ICU bed, and numerous states are running out of ICU beds. Even a non-scientist such as yourself should be able to understand the implications of that.

Seeing as they are all still alive, obviously not Biden.

We're running out of beds!!!!

That's not alarmism?

How come you even included the first two sentences? They ruined a perfect, complete non sequitur!

At my physical recently, I asked my doctor about the efficacy of masks. I was wearing a cloth one, he was wearing a more "diesel" one. He said that the one I was wearing does nothing. Which raises the question of why require that people wear a face covering if so many people are wearing something that is not effective.

"One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel

And the next it's rolling over me . . . ."

My daughter and her spouse are both showing symptoms of active covid infection- fevers, loss of taste, luckily no breathing problems, knock wood. Of course the Dr. said go get tested immediately. Testing is still so spotty here in PA that they had to drive to MARYLAND (only 45 minutes but still) to get a test administered today. The results won't be back for 48 hours. This could have been, and should be, much different than the way things are running now.

Are you tempted to wear a Catwoman mask?

Lol! I have like 10 of them but not a Catwoman mask! You can call them Stevie Nicks masks. Her wardrobe mistress when they go on tour went to my high school. I didn't really know her well but when Fleetwood Mac had their tour cancelled this woman started making masks like crazy and mailing them to everyone for a donation. She made hundreds for Texas first responders, it was awesome. They are pretty cool fabrics and designs. Better than those Pennywise clown masks that are so creepy!
