Does Anyone hate the 80's as much as me?

I loved growing up in the 1980s. I attended many great concerts. I remember listening to a wide variety of music. College radio was pushing independent and alternative bands that wouldn't otherwise have an outlet. New Wave, Thrash, Hardcore, Rap, Alternative all blossomed. It was a great decade. It was MY decade. Edited by ReRushed

Some hair bands sucked yes . But I loved players like DeMartini, Lynch,Vivien Campbell,Vandenberg, and the mighty and criminally forgotten Jake E Lee. I was 20 in 86 and by that time I had started to migrate away from metal bands and rediscovered my love for Kansas, I remember liking Zebra a lot too . Nirvana I liked but by the time 1991 or 92 rolled around I was realizing my time enjoying popular music was coming to a end. What I hated most about that era was the ballad. Now don't get me wrong some ballads were great. Cinderella's Don't know what you got was epic goodness. And Queensryche's Silent Lucidity ( radio over-airplay ruined this song for me ) comes to mind also. But it is a copycat business and that is what kills it sometimes.

I was 10-19 in the 80s. Formative years.

Yeah, there was a lot of shit, but also a lot of great stuff, I get where the O.P. is coming from.

As a keyboard player, we were ALWAYS on the outside cause we weren't guitarists! And to be fair, I didn't really like a lot of keyboard playing at the time.

I was a total snob about stuff like Depeche Mode (my loss, really, cause they made some great music which I figured out later). But at the time I just didn't "get it".

My love affair with metal peaked at Master of Puppets, really... after that I got DEEP into 70s music of all kinds. and more into jazz.

There's a lot of 80s music I didn't get into until the 90s or later, since I spent most of the 1987-1990 period immersed in Classic rock, prog, etc... I had a lot of catching up to do :)

I never minded Depeche Mode. Its the Cure I never could stand. Still cant stand. Him and Morrossey.

I confess to being a huge Duran Duran fan in the day.

To me there was a big difference between The Cure and Morrissey despite many people being fans of both. Morrissey bored me but The Cure was interesting stuff.

Depeche Mode I liked for two songs then fell asleep.

Steve Smith, just seen your thread and I think I understand where you're coming from. I lived in Liverpool during the eighties, and think the problem was that we only had dreadful Radio 1 as a major radio station. You guys in the US had/have a gazillion FM stations, what this meant was huge amounts of good music was ignored, only appearing if Tommy Vance played it on the Friday rock show. This one radio station would only play rock if it was awful AOR like Journey, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon etc, and then only their hits. You would have multiple orgasms if Rush ever got played, which they didn't even though Spirit of Radio and Tom Sawyer were hits sort of.

Rock music venues,we used to go to one called Milo's Bar, were full of those big perm, poodle rockers a la Motley Crue and Poison. No where would the places play any classic rock and progressive rock was a no no.

Hello All

Maybe I am being slightly unfair but your years between the ages of 18 and 25 are supposed to be the best of times

I was 14 when the 80's began and 25 when they thankfully ended.

Let me be clear, I HATED the 80's IN THE 80s!!!!!

So much vacous poodle permed rock with absolutely no substance whatsoever.

Bon Jovi, Europe, Skid Row, Poison, Motley Crue, just awful awful

Little girl magazines like Smash Hits running polls like "who has the best hair? Jon bon Tempi or Joey Tempest"

I would go to a rock club where you would be judged by how tight your trousers were and how big your poodle perm was.

Guitar playing was just the same. How much do you know about modes? Lydian, Mixalidian, Lochrian, Aolian, Phrygian, up your own arsealydian. I actually spoke to a lad in a rock from Stoke at the time who told me he was doing serious dissertation about classical metal and was coming to Newcastle to sit and pass exams. I thought about asking him to "examine his arse" but walked away.

It was the most horrible horrible awful time in the UK!!!!!

The most horrible time ever.

Thank goodness that Grunge with bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden came in the late 80's and got rid of all the terrible pretentious useless shit!

I did have long hair in the 80's and was an accomplished player but I just hated all of that crap.

Very sorry for my rant, I wish I had grown up in the 60's or 70's

Steve :-(

The 80s were the best, bite me.

I think the 80's was an era that you could have taken or left.... I saw a LOT of crazy shows in the 80's, including Rush three times....but a bunch of other stuff.

Ozzy Osbourne and Motorhead on the Blizzard of Ozz tour, Rossington Collins Band, LOT'S of metal...Rainbow, Scorpions, Riot, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ted Nugent, Gary Moore, Krokus, Def Leppard,.... I also got to see Pink Floyd, Asia, Emerson, Lake and Powell, Yes, Anderson, Bruford Wakeman and Howe....I thought it was a great time to see live bands!

SEIZE HIM!!!

The 80's were effin great! No one alive then would say otherwise*. I question your authenticity and demand to see your birth certificate.

I had 27 inches of great hair. I had muscle cars. I had cool chicks. I had 5150 in the tape deck!

Just checked out the youtube vid for Don Henley's 'The Boys Of Summer' 1984, just so cool

And yeah so were Duran Duran, The Cure, The Police and god knows how many others. Great new artists were poppin up every 5 mins in those days... Among which, Rush continued to thrive

Let's see

We've got loud bands playing songs with tons of guitar that make you feel like driving 150mph over every neighborhood lawn and chicks

who dress like hookers loving it all

I fail to see the problem here

First half of the '80s were a good time in my life- the second half was really, really not.

But despite a LOT of dreck in the music world, there was some good stuff- Rush was on quite a streak then, and the '80s were also a golden era for heavy metal.

I agree. I think the 90's was poor musically once Grunge came along. Garage band sound became popular and being proficient on an instrument wasn't necessary.

I understand not liking Grunge for its supposed simplicity, but how do Grunge bands lack proficiency on instruments? Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains and Soundgarden seem very proficient to my ears, as does Nirvana.

I didn't say they weren't proficient, I said it wasn't necessary. Like comparing Prog to Grunge is like night and day. Simplistic chord structures, lots of three chord songs. Etc.

Do you mean Permanent Waves?????

It is my favourite album

Please explain????

He's messing with you. We all know PeW is really a 70's album but some of us apparently like to make the argument that since it was released on January 1st of 1980, it must be an eighties album. I just don't see the logic.

;) :P

I LOVE THE FUKKING 80'S!!!!

Graduated in high school in 1986!

I did Motley Crue's "Theatre Of Pain," Rush "Power Windows" and ZZ Top's "Afterburner albums. One in crayon, one in oil paints, one in pencil for art class.

I got Art Student Of The Year and I suck!

That's legitimately epic, Earl. Now I just realized I should really start putting my growing art skills to the test by doing some classic album covers.

My dad will love them.

Duh!

I love RATT, DOKKEN, POISON BLACK N BLUE, AUTOGRAPH, WHITE LION, WHITESNAKE, VANDENBERG, CINDERELLA and MOTLEY CRUE!

Please keep ripping me for my love of hair metal! That genre of music is almost over too!

Life is short.

So says the Narcissist!!! LOL!!!

So funny!

Narcissus was so in love with himself he would gaze into his own reflection every night into a nearby lake. The lake would warn him not to gaze too close into the water.

He was so in love with himself that eventually the fool fell into the lake and drowned because he didn't know how to swim.

Kind of ironic that I am labeled this immature boy.

I swam varsity in the 80's. Butterfly was my best stroke.

Yep all about me. LOL!

Tonight I might just have a stroke typing about nothing.

I thought he was so in love with himself that "Narcissus is turned to a flower"

A flower?
