Do you consider Beach Boys a rock or pop band?

I am unsure. But many songs by Beach Boys I heard sound more POP to my ears.

There is an unfair stigma attached to the term "pop" or "pop music" as it implies that, because the music might have a broad or universal appeal, it should be disregarded ..

 

Some of the greatest music ever - from Blondie, to The Ramones, ABBA, The Beatles, The Bee Gees or The Bay City Rollers - fall into the "pop" category ..

Both, there's not much of a difference. Pop isn't a very well defined genre, it's usually just the commercialization of some other genre or combination. They'd be filed under pop/rock at Walmart, but I think of them as surf rock for my own purposes.

Since I grew up listening to them on the AM radio, I've never considered them anything other than an AM Top 40's hits band.

Pop is really a sub-genre of rock.

 

Some argue their approach to fusing styles into their unique sound, and impact it had on artists for decades that followed, qualify them as one of the earlier prog influences. Yes, I'm mostly thinking Pet Sounds here.

I always liked their vocal harmonies; they were great. The Beach Boys especially and The Mamas and The Papas also; their harmonies really stood out among other groups.

And apparently there wasn't much separation of the usage of rock and pop until around the late 60s.

 

For what it's worth, Wikipedia labels them an American rock band.
