They are like a blend of Clarity era Jimmy and DCFC. Beneath Medicine Tree...if all else fails try the song Coffee.2 points

My fave is Transatlanticism, but like the band Copeland (you will love them) I find Death Cab painfully underrated.2 points

Just back from a week of winter sun in Gran Canaria. I took the book in audible format with us, and the Missus and I listened to it in the evenings, getting through the entire thing. A few comments:- - Having Geddy do the narration (and in places Alex) really brought it to life for me. - The early sections detailing his family's ordeal during the war years was harrowing, but key to the whole book. - The drug taking was unsurprising for the times, but strangely I just didn't expect it from Rush. - The final section detailing detailing Neil's diagnosis and eventual passing, got me real emotional. - Overall a tremendous listen (i've never done an audio book before). But I will also read the hard copy. - I was somewhat underwhelmed with the 'lost demos'. Can't wait for the Wolverhampton gig now!1 point

Yeah, that. Ged and Al wee celebrating a great show and a great run at their party. Their crowd was thinking 'man, is it really over?'. Neil's party was celebrating all of it being over. His crowd was welcoming him back.1 point

Something that I found quite striking, from the later part of the book.1 point

$40 US. I thought about buying one, but decided not to. The book itself is enough for me.1 point

I think that Geddy Lee is famous.1 point

To be clear, I wasn't judging anybody. Just a little surprised.1 point

I have yet to read it...I am the patient sort who is imagining it will show up under the xmas tree...but I've been paying attention to the chatter around it. The coke stuff is surprising to me, too. I will always remember listening to the ESL version of YYZ in the car with a friend on a road trip - totally cranked - and when the band kicked back in after the drum solo, my buddy said "there's no way Geddy didn't just do a line of coke...listen to how intense his playing is right here". I totally shrugged that one off as impossible. Blowing my mind that he may very well have been using those moments to...use.1 point

Proud to be in the 7% along with Mr. Weinrib... 😉1 point

I'm listening to the audiobook and loving it. Biggest surprises: 1) the separate lives that Ged and his wife have lived 2) Neil's drug use (Alex was no surprise) 3) Alex drunkenly destroying the hotel room in England for no reason sounded suspiciously similar to his felony charges at the Florida resort1 point

Finished six chapters. Have to force myself to slow down. (Trying to balance it by reading Romano's Moving Pictures which obviously isn't nearly as good in comparison) More than a quarter of the way through and they just got to the first album. Seems like a lot is going to be left out. (Still want a copy of the 1200 page manuscript.) Love the pictures, didn't realize some of them were color but I finally found them.1 point

After escorting them [the girls] out into the hallway, Gene followed, grabbed me and pushed me against the wall, demanding to know why I’d given them the boot. “Hey, man” I said, “they were bumming everyone out!” He said “Yeah, but….” and he angrily shared with me a few words that could only be described as a lesson in female anatomy. I’ll leave it at that. So effin’ uncool. ——————————————————————————— Don’t leave it at that, Geddy! TELL US EVERYTHING…..1 point

My days in the far north are finished, I'm working closer to home now as a meteorological technician, repairing and calibrating weather instrumentation. It's not as exciting as what I was doing before, but it's a good job and the stability is a nice change!1 point

No flaming, just happy to hear it! You'll enjoy the book. :)1 point

Steve Lillywhite can go f**k himself apparently. LMAO.1 point

To this day he has a long f***ing memory for anyone who's ever mistreated him.1 point

Those people are simply miserable. The popular expression Misery loves company is a true statement. When people are miserable, they often try to make others share their misery. They don't like seeing happy people, so they try their best to make them unhappy.1 point

I saw that today looking around for coverage of interviews. Nice one! It's not just asking a question that folks might already have a general idea about, but hearing Geddy describe his feelings about R40 being the end was really nice. And actually, we already knew about the different feelings between the guys and that it might be over, but Neil feeling "liberated" is a more definitive description of how he must have been growing more excited with each show closer to the end, than the other guys.1 point

I love Neil's style of writing. It's certainly a different style but I'm enjoying Geddy's style too. Interesting to compare the two.1 point

I did the same and immediately listened to three and a half chapters before nodding off to sleep. Today the wife and I have a 15-hr drive from Nevada to the Canada-Washington border, so the audio book will get the full listen. Maybe twice! I agree that it's great hearing Geddy himself tell these stories.1 point

Who are these people? Oh yeah......Trolls.1 point

On Chapter 6 and it’s a fantastic read. I have th audible versions going and love it on my daily commute. Also bought the hardcover of course. I am enjoying this better than any of Neil’s books.....actually far more.1 point

His accents make it come alive, it is great to hear him read this. The sad parts must have been hard to do though, bet there were some extra takes here and there.1 point

Great book! I whipped right through it, even thought it was 500+ pages. In fact, I thought it seemed a little rushed at times. (No pun intended!) Geddy did say that the editors chopped out a lot, maybe there will be an "expanded edition" in the future. Also, it was neat that Geddy mentioned many of his musical influences. For example:1 point

Oh, man…..that chapter was something else. All those little events, the secret acts of kindness by German soldiers, the chance meetings with people who know where your loved ones are…..it’s no wonder people like to say that “Life is a Miracle”.1 point

That's really cool!1 point

I glanced at this topic, thank you Blueschica! But, but... I don't want too many spoiler alerts. For once, and probably the first time, I am not ordering something fresh off the press. It really adds up and I have ordered a tonne of Rush stuff hot off the presses in the last few years. So I thought I would wait a bit for a price drop, but even typing this I feel like an ugly wart on the backside of a lonely frog in a wilderness swamp. Everything has been so positive from what I am reading, from different directions, I really want both the book and audio book. I love the tactile holding and seeing the photos but I also do a lot of road trips. I could listen to Geddy talk for hours - and I will! This weekend I will poke around and make my orders1 point

Hey he answered mine!1 point

Oh my god... listening to Ged describe the VT mixing and mastering sessions made me want to rip my hair out. It confirmed every dark suspicion I've always had: that these idiots (mastering engineers, not the guys in Rush) were deliberately trying to make each album louder than the last, totally aware of what they were doing. Howie Weinberg was using f***ing LIMP BIZKIT as a reference point when mastering VT. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH.1 point

Yep! First we got the Big Beautiful Book of Bass and now we've got the Big Beautiful Book of Bassist!1 point

Are we going to hear new music from you and Alex? CygnusX5 Certainly, there will be new music from Alex and new music from me. Will there be new music from us together? I think it’s likely.1 point
-
Me too. But I guess that’s a bit of naïveté on my part? I mean of course they were taking anything, being on the road so much. Their image was always of being “nice nerds” too - so maybe that crafted imagery influenced the way I looked at the band.1 point
-
Yes, I was impressed he was so open about it. A lot of people would figure it was over with and not worth mentioning. I know Alex has talked about it but didn't know that about Geddy.1 point

Lee says they were open to anything but speed and heroin.1 point

That's the one thing I feel like I'm missing out on by listening to the audiobook. Ged describes a bunch of photos in the text and I'd really love to be able to see them. Ah well, in a month...1 point
