  1. How good is a band when it releases an album with Dancing With Mr. D, Heartbreaker, Angie and Star Star, and it’s considered a step back?

  2. ....the first Rush album I listened to in full was Moving Pictures, which was released more or less 40 years ago! I really can't believe that Rush have been around since 1973/4, and I wonder where the hell time went! All those classic albums such as "2112", "Fly By Night", "ATWS" and "PW". All those albums that I used to listen to on my old beat-up Marantz hi-fi system back in the late 70s early 80s, and here we are now some 40 years on and their music still feels relevant and inspiring. What was your first Rush album when you knew this band was something special?

  3. Check it out below. Geddy Lee on the Genius of Neil Peart For those who're prompted with a subscription page on their mobile device, you can read the article/interview from Yahoo here. This is probably part two of what writer Brian Hiatt hinted at with mention in this recent podcast here.

  4. The first album I heard (and indeed purchased) was Caress Of Steel way back in 1975. I knew at that point that this was a special band............ and here we are, still enthusing about them!!! :Alex: :Neil: :geddy:

  6. Such a talented actress and great role model for so many up and coming actors over the years. I too enjoyed her role in Fried Green Tomatoes, I actually got to go to the actual restaurant in Georgia where it was filmed and had fried green tomatoes. ;) She won Emmys and an Oscar besides receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. Bet her book will be worth reading, (was married to Miles Davis for a short time) such a life! RIP :rose:

  7. It was tough to vote against Supertramp. COTC and EITQM were very important albums for me when I was a teenager. DSOTM and COTC are both still top 25 in my collection. Pink Floyd was a band that was easy to listen to but wasn't important when it came to my life lessons. Cool Topic!

  8. How good is a band when it releases an album with Dancing With Mr. D, Heartbreaker, Angie and Star Star, and it’s considered a step back? I think the only real difference is there's a couple songs on Goats Head Soup that I don't like that much, whereas there aren't really any songs like that on Exile, or Sticky Fingers, or Let It Bleed. The highs on Goat's Head Soup are probably just about as high as those on the previous albums.

  10. It may not be 100% accurate but can you think of a better way to gauge the best known tune? Of course best known tune is kinda vague. I imagine there may be regional differences in terms of best known tune. What song do they close with live? I'm not saying chart position is completely divorced from "best known," but there are a lot of bands that have a signature song (or two) that aren't necessarily the highest charting one(s). Take albums for a moment. Ballbreaker charted higher than Back in Black. Which would you say AC/DC is better known for?

  12. My older cousin has a M.F.A. in classical piano performance and has cut several albums and built a career in music. I grew up idolizing his musical skill and my earliest memories include attending his piano recitals. He taught me keys for about a year when I was seven. Anyways, when I turned 15, his career was in full swing, and for my birthday he gave me three CDs. "You're ready for the best music now," he said. "So here, these are for you." I looked at them in my hands. "Number one is the best jazz ever made - Oscar Peterson, The Trio." "Number two is the best classical ever made - Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto." "Number three is the best rock ever made - Moving Pictures by Rush." I was off to the races. I bought Presto and 2112 in the next month. All three remain my favorite overall Rush albums. I still listen to Peterson and the Rach 2 as well. He was right about all of them.

  14. A bit of challenging poll to say the least. The only thing I can do is rank them in order of my favs... 1: Supertramp - Crime of the Century 2: Pink Floyd - Animals 3: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 4: Supertramp - Breakfast in America 5: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon 6: Pink Floyd - The Wall 7: Supertramp - Even in the Quietest Moments 8: Supertramp - Crisis, What Crisis? I might put Breakfast at the top of that list.

  16. For me, it was Grace Under Pressure. I liked "Distant Early Warning" on MTV, I remembered "New World Man" from one of those K-Tel collections I already had, so my mom bought GUP for me on a trip to Kmart. I loved it right away, and the rest is history.

  19. An interesting set of options as there are merits for both bands. In the first poll I have chosen DSOTM and WYWH. Much as I like both the Supertramp albums, the two Floyd ones are just stronger. In the second poll I have chosen Animals and Breakfast In America. Animals is a masterpiece. I was never that fussed on The Wall whereas I love Breakfast In America which contains some cracking songs. In the third poll much as I like Supertramp, the vote has to go to Floyd.

  20. Super tough choices - in a couple of cases, it's "just barely" - I love Crime of the Century, but Dark Side has to take that one. And Fool's Overture is in my top ten songs of all time, but Animals is pretty much a joy straight through.

  25. I don't post in this part of the forum much because most of my Rush conversations have been exhausted. But, I have a reason to start a thread in here. Two days ago I became a grandfather for the third time! Baby and my daughter-in-law are doing great. My son is a big rush fan and he showed me this which I thought was hilarious. My newborn grandson loves it!

  28. Freaks And Geeks is on Hulu and the songs used on the show are added back. Apparently, they weren't on the Netflix streamed episodes I got into 2-3 years ago and I didn't watch the show when it premiered in my first year of college. Already, they have Running With The Devil and I'm Alright in the pilot. Bad Reputation by Joan Jett at the opening credits is still there, though.

  30. I thought she was in her 70s. Had no idea she was that age. Saw Fried Green Tomatoes for the first time recently on Showtime and it's one of the better movies that gets the "chick flick" label thrown on it. Great performances especially with that hilarious scene with Kathy Bates. "I"m older and I have more insurance!" RIP

  39. They were constantly evolving from record to record. Rush couldn't have done Closer To The Heart on their debut any more than they could've done The Big Money on Signals. It was an album by album progression through a variety of different styles.

  40. A classic "that guy" actor. Seen him a million times, never really knew his name. You left a good body of work, sir! Thank you and enjoy the peace. Isn't that how it is with every character actor? As soon as you see them you think "hey, that guy". Always know their faces but never their names. Good gig to have since there always seems to be a job for them somewhere.
