  4. Slim to none What makes you say that? :P I was wondering the same thing. I think he's afraid that government censors are about to impose a media blackout on coverage of the Goober case. :fuckwithadmin: Yeah, he's been threatening them in chat... It all adds up to now. Who is threatening? Yeah, it was quite elliptic. I meant: RG is threatening the admins. Are you serious? If so, I am, once again, speechless. "RG is threatening the admins." Huh? Even as a joke that makes no sense. Huh? Maybe Tombstone will give us all new territories with the coming YBG, territories that do not irk you or established forum members. In the meanwhile, I just felt left in limbo. Not a great feeling. We're coasting into 15,000 hits. If we're irking people they haven't posted to let us know. This is a forum where people aren't afraid to share their opinions. TRFr's read this...there's no other explanation for numbers. The people who comment and join in on the roast aren't malcontents who deserve limbo. This material isn't obscene or worthy of censorship. Even if this thread is stifled it can't stop the creative synergy that exist among it's participants. Quite right, Tombstone! In all honesty, I find it hard to fathom any TRFers who would be offended by this thread, considering it is very obviously all in fun, and also considering some of the stuff that is posted on TRF, most especially in the political section. Hear hear! I'm not offended by this thread - it's the greatest thread ever! :yay:  :yay:  :yay:

  10. Almost made me cry. For such a private man, for him to write like this - out of the three, we know the most about him - isn't that ironic? Not to me, shy people tend to let it out more when they're not face to face with someone. That's why we get so much writing from this guy.. I don't know that he really is that shy. And how many times has he said in interviews that his private life is private, and that the fans don't own him? I just find it odd that he would tell us so much. Too bad he can't tolerate us, because I would love to talk to him. He is well read, obviously very intelligent, and I would love to hear why he thinks the way he thinks about many things. Ya maybe social anxiety is a better description than simple shyness. Ever see him giving a speech or accepting an award? Sometimes he's hard to look at because he's so bloody uncomfortable! I know this feeling and I don't know how he manages to get through it! It's the same kind of anxiety trigger as meeting fans who shower him with praise. He's said it himself. "Extroverts will never understand introverts" this couldn't be truer. Also "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend". He's not just saying he has no time for fans.. He's saying He "CAN'T pretend.." Meaning he just doesn't know how.. It's not that he can't tolerate us, it's that he simply does not know how to tolerate they way we often act.. That said Lorraine, I bet Neil would love to chat with you if you could somehow think of him as an equal. ..Isn't that ironic? ;) Well said. Excellent post I think my real problem with all of it is that, as much as I don't blame Neil one bit for trying to clarify why he's not extroverted, it's hard for me to see him as part of any group that truly faces being misunderstood or disenfranchised. Few people who go through tragedies in life are privileged enough to have the empathy of a mass audience. There are countless people whose entire lives were horror stories, and they had no platform whatsoever. So while I'm sure Neil is a decent person who sees himself as equal, it's society that's guilty of seeing his wealth and status as the only reason why his story matters.

  11. I would be really impressed if they omitted Tom Sawyer. I think they should do it just because they can. Seriously, they don't need to play it....unless they're really interested in pleasing the casual fan who knows only four Rush tunes. I hope they aren't. They've basically said it's permanently in their set. I'm glad about that. There's always first Rush show folks in the crowd. I'm already plotting to take my stepson. It'll be his first Rush show. This is why it's permanent. Quite rightly so.

  13. I love how Geddy's voice has changed over the years! This is one of my favourite things about Rush, how Geddy has so many vocal 'eras' and kind of has something for everyone, whether one prefers his 70's near-shrieking or 80's mellower range or the 'dry' sound of the Presto - Roll the Bones era or the current powerful vocals. While it's true that he doesn't seem to hit high notes (or certain notes, it seems) with as much ease as he has, Geddy has a current vocal sound that is very good and works really well with Rush's recent music. I like that he isn't trying to sing the same way all the time, but is instead trying to do what works best with him. And his tone... he has such a unique, mellow, soothing tone to his voice, which really gets brought out with his lower range. For example, the spoken parts of 'Double Agent'. Listening to that song with headphones on... there's a lot of good Geddyness in that one! :)

  15. Lots of uninformed and outdated generalizations here. First off, who says that all music has to be based on melody to be good? If you are listening to rap for the melody, then yeah you probably aren't going to like it. A lot of rap is fully percussive music. Everything from the drums to the instrumental tracks to the rapper's flow is all working towards a percussive effect. It's sort of like how a good drum solo works, only with voices. Secondly, it's not a rule that in order to make rap music, you must be incapable of playing an instrument. Sure, not every rapper can play an instrument, but nobody ever seems to call out rock lead singers who don't play instruments, and there are plenty of them too. Plenty of rappers are also very skilled record producers who write and perform their own music. The Rza, Dr. Dre, and even guys like Kanye West come to mind. At it's best sampling can be a tool for the creation of new music from existent recordings. The Beastie Boys were particularly good at borrowing elements of other music and making them their own. It's really not all that different from when rock musicians borrow pieces from other compositions *coughlavillastrangiatocough*. And then there are the lyrics. Please tell me more about how nobody from the 60's 70's or 80's rock scenes ever wrote braggadocios music about themselves, their sexual prowess, rampant drug use, or any of those other things that "rappers always talk about". Just like how not every rock band was Whitesnake (the band named after a penis), not every rapper just raps about themselves or how great they are. A lot of rap has very serious spiritual and emotional lyrics. I'm not saying that you or anybody else has to listen to rap or enjoy it. I mean, I'm not really a huge rap guy myself, but I at least respect that there actually is a good deal of artistry that can go into it. Perfect. :) Old school rap is pretty awesome, and has some kickass tunes! There ARE very skilled musicians in the rap game. Not all generalizations apply.

  18. "We want to try and play different material this time," Lifeson says. "I've always wanted to do some rarer Rush material, and this should be a good opportunity to do that. I also think it's going to be a long tour. We just need to stay healthy until then." Please, Geddy and Neil, for once listen to Alex. If Alex made the setlist, I'd be happiest man alive.

  19. make sure to click the link to the actual RS link. Alex says something like "he wants to play more rare songs". We now have a whole, solid year of healthy bickering and speculating! Clem

  21. I feel like some people cut down his voice too much. I think his voice has a perfect blend of that mid 80s sound and a new sound. Yes, he obviously struggles with certain notes, but he still reaches them! Some of his mid range notes, like for example "What I'm hoping to find" from the Analog Kid (live this tour) on almost all the videos I've seen sounds like 80s geddy. He doesn't always sound like that, but when he does it's amazing. I love his current voice/vocal range.

  22. what's weird is he was the one in the band who listened to the most non-metal music! I still don't think he'd allow a turd like that to be released Some may argue that a song like Fade to Black is similar in that it's a slow tempo type ballad thingy, but something about NEM that is just hokey .. fade to black has balls at least I always liked how Fade and Sanitarium used the same formula back then. They're a little dated now but they still have traces of good Met I like. NEM just gives shudders not shivers, as does the mere mention of Bob Rock for that matter.

  23. Now Michael Palin.... always love that guy!!! That was the "Salad Days" sketch right? One of the all-time best (among many) Python sketches! The piano player getting his hands lopped off when the lid slammed shut, then holding up his stumps spurting blood, STILL puts me in stitches every time. Upperclass Twit of the Year is still at the top of my list!!!!! http://www.cardinalfang.net/episodes/season_two/images/spam_waitress.jpg SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM You know that's my fave... re-watched it last night actually. I make some or other reference to that every time the topic of Spam comes up. I wish I had it on video because the look on the man's face was classic, but it was before smartphones. I once re-created the Fish Slapping Dance on my husband. The look on his face was a mixture of disgust (he hates fish) and "jesus, wtf is wrong with this woman - she's lost her mind". And he STILL married me, and still doesn't "get" British humour. :( Though he does think Sit On My Face is funny (who wouldn't)!

  25. Dream Theater was fantastic last night The set is the same but this is the best i've heard the band sound of the six times i've seen them. Strange, Portnoy leaves and the band becomes a tighter unit. Who would've thought? LeBrie sounded great and like I said before, knowing what songs he will be singing each night has helped his vocal performance tremendously. Playing the same set has helped the band to. I never thought I would say these guys couldn't get any better playing together but somehow they have. This was the biggest stage production they've done to. Lots of new lighting and special made videos for a lot of the songs. The crowd was great and very receptive of everything, especially Illumination Theory and the songs in the encore. I could go on all day about the awesomeness that was this show but then it would be the longest post in the history of this forum. Everything flowed so well with the song selection and even though I wanted to hear The Bigger Picture more than anything, I didn't care once the show was over. The band is in such top form right now, you have to see them live to fully appreciate it because my words won't do their performance justice. If you're undecided on weather or not to see them in this North American run, do whatever you can attend a show if possible. These guys just get better live as the years go by.

  33. I believe "ripping off" or "borrowing" or "giving homage" is inherently rock and roll, inherently popular music. Melodies and riffs are constantly being recycled. Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin (and many, many others) ripped off riffs and melodies time and time again. Rap and Hip Hop artists cut to the chase and use samples. Personally, I don't think it's that big a deal. Good music and bad music. It's contained in all popular genres. I loved the Cars when I was a young one. I never cared they blatantly ripped off a Beatles riff. And I never cared about what the Beatles ripped off.

  42. Low Man's Lyric is great! I loved the vibe of the moodier, longer songs from that period. Where The Wild Things Are, Fixxxer, Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, The House That Jack Built, and Low Man's Lyric were all pretty different from their other shit, but still up there with their best material IMO
