  1. This is from a recent gig. You can probably tell that it was bloody hot on stage, because I'm completely soaked. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad190/TDear_1984/TobiasAshesGig_zpsef4558ac.jpg

  2. I've been in love with this song since shortly after it's release. Luca is a genius. Your first post in this thread and you don't even offer us a few words of encouragement. May you be forced to sleep in a room with no curtains! Oh boy, this thread's going to be a trip to examine, isn't it? :o

  4. I got into Tull after listening to a friend's older brother's copy of M.U. I taped it, and then went out and bought Repeat. That was right around the time Broadsword and the Beast was released. I saw them, backed by a group called Saga if memory serves, in Providence, RI. Great show, and I still think B and the B is criminally underrated.

  5. While it is nearly impossible to narrow this list down to twelve, here goes... The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds - My sister came home from college and gave me her copy of this album (much like the brother and sister in "Almost Famous") and said, "Listen to this. I mean, really listen to this." I was well on my way to being fully addicted to rock and roll. I put the album on and my big ol' head phones and listened to it about three or four times start to finish. I didn't know music could make a person feel that way or sum up how you felt about the world around you. To me, this is the very best album ever produced by any artist or band in music history. The Beatles – Magical Mystery Tour - While it was me Mum's copy of "The Early Beatles" and that started my lifelong love of The Beatles, it was this album that was among the first LPs I ever purchased on my own. I remember getting home, going to my room and putting it on the stereo and taking the booklet apart and putting the pictures all over my wall. This is one of those perfect albums and it truly changed my life. Johnny Cash – At Folsom Prison - My uncle had this album and every time we'd go to his house to visit I would play it over and over. On one such occasion, he said, "Why don't you take that record home with you?" My uncle was a very tough biker and I really looked up to him. He was much like a father figure in my life as it was just me Mum rasing my sisters and I. It was the first random act of generosity that I can recall and the album became an instant prize possession. I cannot even count how many times I have listened to this album over the years. Cheap Trick – Heaven Tonight - I've always said that Cheap Trick was a band all of my own. Up until that point all music was a hand me down of sorts, The Beatles, Roy Orbison & Dylan from me Mum and all of the classic rockers from my older sister. When Cheap Trick burst on the scene, they were my band...I was so in love with this album then, and still am to this day. The album just spoke to where I was at that point in my young life. Alice Cooper – School’s Out - One of the first albums that I purchased with my own money. I was 9 years old and bought the album because I had (and still have) the 45rpm single and just had to hear more! It is where my lifelong love affair with the music of Alice Cooper began. Bob Dylan – Shot of Love - This album is just perfect. It is raw emotion put down on vinyl. I really wasn't going to fit in with the praise and worship crowd, but I really felt the strong call of God to draw near to Him. There is a song on the album entitled, "Property of Jesus" that has the line in it, "Laugh at him behind his back, just like the others do. Remind him of what he used to be when he comes walking though". I was walking the tightrope of a life of faith and the party life. I thought the song summed it up perfectly; I belonged to Jesus and didn't really care what anyone thought of it. Genesis – A Trick of the Tail - I heard this album at a party when I was 14 years old. I had never heard anything like that before in my life. It was 1977 and my main interest in music was Kiss, Queen, Aerosmith, Rush, Zeppelin, etc. I went out the very next day and got this record and was just blown away by the storytelling. Kiss – Destroyer - All I can say are, "you had to be there". When this album came out I was just hooked. Another one of "my bands" it was loud, it was fun and it took the world, including my world, by storm. This is just a perfect little rock and roll record. I was mesmerized by the music, the cover, the whole deal...then I saw them live on the "Spirit of '76 Tour", that was all she wrote. Queen – Sheer Heart Attack - My friend and I rode our bikes up to Spectrum records on the campus of Syracuse University. I bought this album mainly because "Killer Queen" was a big hit on the radio at the time. It was a lot of music for my little 11 year old brain to handle...but handle it I did. From the very opening carnival sounds of "Brighton Rock" I was just hooked. I have been a huge fan of Queen's music ever since. Rush – A Farewell to Kings - My friend John and I skipped school and hitch hiked to Shoppingtown Mall, mainly to meet girls and get into some trouble. We were at the record store and these two, rather pretty girls were looking at what I know now, was the new Rush album. My friend John says, "Man, their singer sounds like a girl!" I happened to be a bit taken with one of the two girls looking at the Rush album, so I bought it. That pretty girl and I kissed for a little while behind the mall and my friend and I went home and listened to this album. That is where my musical journey with Rush began. We went to see Rush on the "Farewell to Kings Tour" and that was pretty much it. Best $6.99 I ever spent. Bruce Springsteen – Darkness of the Edge of Town - It was the summer of 1978. I was 15 years old and crazy for two things...girls and music. This album was the soundtrack for both of these loves. It was a new, fresh sound and really spoke to my working class childhood surroundings. My friend Michael and I took the bus downtown to meet these two girls we had met while working at a summer camp to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on that tour. We had a great time, one of the girls parents picked them up and we walked home singing Bruce songs at the top of our lungs while drinking Old Vienna Splits we talked some guy into buying for us, because we were too young to buy beer. It was the most amazing time to grow up and we had the most amazing music as our soundtrack. The Who – Quadrophenia - We used to hang in my friend Tom's older brother's attic room to get, well, to get, hmm, well, you know. So, we'd play his brothers records. We put this album on one day, which was far more sophisticated than any of us could have realized, but just had a great sound. I read the album liner and looked at the pictures while listening and all I can say is "something just clicked". I just loved this record. I asked me Mum if she would buy it for me for Christmas that year. "It's a two record set, so you don't have to get me anything else, ok?!” I bargained. Over the years the album has meant so much to me for many different reasons. This from the liner notes, "A tough guy, a helpless dancer. A romantic, is it me for a moment? A bloody lunatic, I'll even carry your bags. A beggar, a hypocrite, love reign over me. Schizophrenic? I'm Bleeding Quadrophenic." I sure didn't know what all of that meant during that first listen all those years ago...but I certainly do now.

  7. I bet if Narpazoid won he would fly west to pick you up personally. He might even scoop up tx on his way... :) Then we could scoop up Goose and Janie, shoot up North and scoop up Mika and Thunder Bay, shoot a bit eastward and scoop up Rush Cannuck, then make a bee line for Toronto. How fun would it be to go as a gaggle of fans to RushCon?! Well, I've sent an email off to a particular family member who I really want to go with. She deserves a vacation, likes Rush and I haven't seen her in forever. We'll see. I'm anxious. I want to start planning this. I'M GOING! Very excited about this! Going to start planning this little Toronto Rush vacation now.

  12. It sounds like you ran into those renegade papal dwarves. H.P.L. would know, but he hasn't visited this thread since he offed himself in one of his Grinder stories a few weeks ago. I guess the task of keeping this thread alive rests solely with us for the time being. I think we should hijack it and change the topic — encourage people to exchange household cleaning tips or something equally exciting. That would breathe new life into it. As usual, my friend, you lack faith! Are you reading too deep into Neal's agnostic lyrics again? What better excuse did I have other than being dead? I mean, Lorraine can play the bum in Toronto and everybody welcomes her back with open arms, I get sacrificed by Julie Delpy and I get the blame?!?! If I didn't know any better I'd be really crossed at you, Substance. But of course, I know it's your nature to be so jolly and sunshine about everything. So here, I'm back. And the Black Dwarf isn't. Lorraine resurfaces after about a month and everyone is falling over themselves to welcome her back, yet we've been toiling away in here for an eternity and our work remains unnoticed and unrewarded. I didn't think anyone read this thread — it turns out they do, but they can't bother to even lift a finger and like any of our posts. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sad055.gif :P Yeah, we are waaay even more underrated than Alex. Tell you what, let them have all their Torontos and Inner City Holimpics. I'm hanging out in Berlin with Greyfriar. The club scene is crazy. You're welcome to join us if you can make it to good old Europe. Before I book my flight from Chicago to Berlin and charge it to the Grinder, I think I should start a poll to find out how people feel about this thread. Maybe something along these lines: Your thoughts about the "TRF Prediction Thread and Roast: Rushgoober's 30,000th post". Do you read it, and aren't H.P.L. and Substancewithoutstyle two of the Grinder's unsung heroes? 1. [ ] I read it every day, but I'm too embarrassed to like any posts in it. 2. [ ] I used to read it until Lorraine left. She was my favorite. 3. [ ] Goober? I didn't notice he was gone. 4. [ ] H.P.L. and Substancewithoutstyle? Who the hell are they? 5. [ ] I wish an admin would lock it and put it out of its misery. 6. [ ] I couldn't care less about that sh*t. Just tossing around some ideas. Feel free to amend these choices and/or add your own.

  16. If I started a list of great beer cooking recipes, it would take the rest of the day and my post would be to long. Beer can take the place of any stock and can take the place of water in many dishes too. I use beer in my kitchen like some use wine. I use way more beer than I do wine. Beer is much more forgiving than wine is. This turned out great and was really easy. The Guinness wasn't too overpowering. A simple, tasty stew. I just saw this dish a few minutes ago. Right here. http://www.discusscooking.com/forums/f51/lamb-and-guinness-stew-89123.html#post1348128 They are making it with lamb though. Not beef. This stew turned out amazing. It will definitely be my go to recipe. In the episode I watched, they went on and on about the best cut of beef to use but I think I would prefer lamb. Think I'll try it that way next time I make it. It's such a perfect cold-weather dish and it made the entire house smell so good!

  26. As a big fan of malapropisms, Archie was always one of my favourites: "A witness shall not bear falsies against thy neighbor." "Last will and tentacle…" "A woman doctor is only good for women’s problems…like your groinocology." "A menstrual show." "the Women’s Lubrication Movement." "That's the kind of luck poor Mr. Lincoln had the night he went to the movies....as he sat in John Wilkes' booth." "It's a proven fact that capital punishment is a well-known detergent to crime." "They just wanna get rid of us old guys over 50 that's all, and put us out to pasture. Well I ain't ready to be pasteurized!" "I ain't got no respect for no religion where the head guy claims he can't make no mistakes. Like he's, waddya call, inflammable." "I've gotta consecrate myself on this newspaper." "two sheeps that pass in the night" "They're gonna keep the ashes around the house in one of them silver urinals" "I just don't want you to do nothing on the sperm of the moment." "The sexual act was never constipated."

  27. Best Rush Show - The VT tour at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Great show. Next day not only were my ears ringing, and I had no voice since I had yelled / song myself horse but my hands actually hurt because I had clapped so long and so hard. I had see Rush once each on the Presto and Counterparts tours and I liked Rush (a lot - they were one of my favorite bands) prior to the show. After the show they were by far my favorite group. Crowed was really into the show. The reaction to Neil's solo - wow. Were I was the crowed reaction was so loud and so long you could not hear them play the next song on the set which was Resist. You knew they were playing something but you could not hear it at all. The crowed finally quieted down enough that you could hear them start the next song, 2112. And man was the crowd into that. The entire show was great. Best non-Rush show - Summer of 1988. Also at SPAC. Judas Priest (Ram it Down tour) with Cinderella opening. I really went to see Cinderella. Huge crowd. Ton of Priest fans. Ton of Cinderella fans. Cinderella had just released their 2nd album "Long Cold Lonely Winter" and were very popular having opened previously for Bon Jovi on his "Slippery When Wet" tour. Cinderella came out and just flaming nailed it. Tremendous set. Even the Priest fans were going nuts. I don't know what they were like normally - only time I ever saw them. But on this night the were just great. Then Priest came out and blew them off the stage. Everybody was going nuts. Incredible show. Made me into a Priest fan, Worst Show? - Also Summer of 1988. Also at SPA. Guns & Roses and Arowsmith. Huge crowd. G & R had its 1st album out and was hot, hot, hot. Smith had "Permanent Vacation" out and was red hot. It was a blazing hot day. Very humid as well. The crowd was electric - just ready to go nuts. G & R came out and was - well, flat. Near the end of the set somebody tossed something up on stage, almost hit Axl and that was the end of the set. Arowsmith came out after a long delay and was just bad. Folks yelling "Play the old stuff". Other folks yelling "Play the new stuff". The crowd wanted to go crazy and the band gave them nothing. Fights all over the place. Would have walked out but I had ridden with some guys who wanted to stay, hoping it would get better - which it did not. Other real great shows? - Summer of either 92 or 93 in Rochester N.Y. Saw Bad Company and 38 Special under a festival tent. Blazing hot but that did not bother anybody. Bad Co was great (yes - thats not normally a word used for them live but on this night it did) and 38 Special blew them off the stage. I was just dripping with sweat after the show and totally horse - but great show. Other great shows - During the mid / late 90's at SPAC I saw The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, The Fab Thunderbirds and 38 Special. I was practically the only person in the ampatheature for The Outlaws and was really into their great set. It was practically a private show with the band just playing to me and appreciating that I was so into their set. Marshall Tucker and 38 Special were both great. The Fab T'bidrds were ok. Still more great shows - Saw Def Leopard & Poison a few years back. Very good. Also, Journey Heart. Also Journey & Night Ranger. Other bad shows? - Tesla with Firehouse opening in the summer of either 92 or 93. Firehouse was great. Just tremendous. Tesla totally sucked and I walked out. They had been good opening for Def Leopard but they were flat big time as headliner. Pity, if they were half as good as Firehouse it would have been a good show. Pity Firehouse came along when they did and never made it bigger than they did. Great live band - at least that one night.

  45. http://i.imgur.com/rMHspqJ.png EXCLUSIVE: YBG REPORTER TELLS ALL Substancewithoutstyle talks candidly about the Goober case, his colleagues, and more. 29 Jan 2014 by Julia Gillard, Times Gossip Reporter It can become rather boring being an entertainment reporter in Brisbane. After all, there are a limited number of footballers and vapid socialites to keep tabs on, so I was delighted when my editor asked me to interview an American celebrity. Since Angelina Jolie is the only one who spends an appreciable amount of time in Queensland, I just assumed it would be her. However, I was a bit crestfallen to learn that my time would be spent in conversation with Substancewithoutstyle, a reporter from the Yukon Blade Grinder, a dubious publication based in a town called Goatnut, Tennessee. My knowledge of Rushgoober and the Neverland Cult was limited, but my editor said it had been a slow week and he needed some page filler. He assured me that it wouldn't take much of my time and would make for some interesting reading, so I reluctantly took the address from him and set off for my meeting with Mr. Style. http://i.imgur.com/UHVHCGP.png The Q1 towers above the beaches (and swamps) of the Gold Coast, Queensland As I asked myself why I was wasting my time on such an obscure figure, I took note of the address on the slip of paper and all second thoughts vanished. I was to meet Style in a posh rental apartment in the Q1 Tower. How could a lowly reporter afford such accommodations? I was intrigued. . . http://i.imgur.com/n54aPl8.png I was filled with anticipation as I knocked on the door to apartment 2112, but when the door opened I was greeted by a curious, geeky, Edward Snowden-like character with glasses. He was no slave to fashion, either. His manner of dress could best be described as Robert Plant circa 1995. Had he changed his style since high school? I had to remind myself that I wasn't there to judge his appearance, so I got down to business. I know this is none of my concern, but how can you afford this place? "Pretty cool, isn't it? This is all courtesy of the Grinder. I got tired of living on the cheap when I came down here, eating at Hungry Jack's and all, so I put this place on the Grinder's tab. After all I've been through I think I deserve a little pampering. Besides, Tombstone never reimbursed me for that Salvatore Ferragamo shirt. I just hope he didn't spend all of his money on hookers at the Soak and Poke." How did you become involved with the Yukon Blade Grinder? "I went to California to protest what I perceived to be the unjust persecution of Goober, but as the facts were revealed it became apparent that the little prick was guilty as sin. The next thing I knew Tombstone had recruited me as some sort of correspondent, making demands about the headers of my articles and such. To make matters worse, we had to go from sunny California to the frozen tundra of Toronto, where my stalker Norman came looking for me. That incident put me over the edge." So you came to Australia? "I had to get away from the chaos of Toronto; Rush are almost unknown here, the weather is beautiful (if you like heat waves), and since I'm familiar with the area it seemed like the perfect getaway. In retrospect, I shouldn't have left the Huguenot without telling someone, but Tombstone should make allowances for odd behaviour considering the stress I've been under." Speaking of Rush, do you think they'll ever come to Australia? "Ha! Are you kidding? There's no profit to be made here. Sure, it would be nice for the smattering of fans they have here if they would play a few clubs in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, but that will never happen. Alex said they once did a show without all the bells and whistles for about 500 people in a club somewhere, but they wouldn't do it again. It's not like they could fill Suncorp Stadium. Coldplay, sure. Rush, pffft. You have your own musical icons, I mean, didn't INXS replace Michael Hutchence after he strangled himself whacking off?" But wouldn't even a small tour provide Neil with material for his blog? "Christ, we don't need that! I'm sure he'd take a cross-country bike tour with his manservant, Michael Mosbach, then proceed to describe every rock and flower he came across in excruciating detail. You can bet it would also be peppered with his half-baked sociopolitical commentary. If Goober read that he'd probably be driven to the brink of suicide." You'll be returning to Toronto? "I suppose I'll head back to the Huguenot Motel. I do feel guilty for leaving because H.P.L. has been doing all of the reporting by himself from his end, traipsing off to all sorts of exotic and strange locales, and never complaining a bit. I should do more to pull my weight; maybe look for more of Alex and Geddy's old haunts. I never know what interesting characters I'll run into." Any final thoughts about Goober? "He should freeze his balls off up there in that cage. If he hadn't been such a vicious little troll at TRF I wouldn't have had to go through all this. I hope Mayor Ford sells him to a vivisectionist." * * * * * As I drove back to my office at the Times, I couldn't help but think how lucky we were that Rush never became popular in Australia. I could only imagine arenas full of air-drumming geeks and nerds, not to mention the fact that Goober could have ended up in a cage suspended from the Sydney Harbour Bridge. How pathetic would that have been?
