  4. A beautiful song! Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance Everybody thinks it's true You know this song reminds me of a friend who was a vagabond...homeless and loved it. He would travel the country staying at different shelters during certain times of the year. During the winter, he would migrate to TN and SC, then to Florida. During the summers he hopped trains to make it to Montana, where he lived out of a make shift shelter next to a lake. He would fish and hunt for food, even plant a small garden. Well, one thing that sticks in my head from our friendship was his departures. I asked him how he knew which trains to board to get to his destination. He said "I can tell where the trains a-goin by the sound of the horn"...reminded me of this song—thanks for that

I was photographing a brand new library on their Centennial campus and figured I'd snap this "shadow shot" because I thought it would be cool. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v312/kellyparis/profilepic.jpg

  6. I ended up pulling out liner notes because the question drove me nuts. David Hood played bass on There Goes Rhymin' Simon on Loves Me Like A Rock . Anthony Jackson did Slip Sliding Away and Hearts and Bones, and Tony Levin did Late in The Evening. Whew, I'm glad I got that settled. Paul's band has always been one of the best around. Here's my entry today. (A great Robben Ford cover of this song was pointed out to me by a fellow TRFer, btw) :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_wetJO7SkMs

  12. Here's a qoute from his former love Carrie Fisher: ex-wife Carrie Fisher says in her autobiography Wishful Drinking that the song "She Moves On" is about her. It's one of several she claims, followed by the line, "If you can get Paul Simon to write a song about you, do it. Because he is so brilliant at it." [20] Thanks Carrie...too bad you blew with Paul. He's seems like a blast at parties and other social functions yep- you sure don't hear any complaints from Edie about Paul!

  16. There's a sincerity to his poetry that really gets down in your bones. Simple truths that can really help you reach a "eureka" moment in life. Paul Simon's music just radiates that honesty

  17. Have to say that is a very unusual pair of song to choose as favorites! The first one says a LOT about the times they were in (and still even applies today). The second one is just ridiculously catchy and clever. Well, the first one the boy commits suicide. But then again as I think about it now I guess the boy in 2112 does too and I never held it against that song. The second one, well, S&G had a few songs about being a criminal and frankly S&G were not very convincing at being part of the hood or what ever :P see, i NEVER interpreted the first song being about suicide. he jumps, but then "he flew away" followed by the "oh my grace, I got no hiding place" repeated a few times. i always thought it was as if he was going to jump, but then something magical and unexplained happened. to me the song is about youth and trying a new way of doing things versus an old entrenched view and resisting change. him flying away i interpret as those unwilling to move forward having a very hard time when they realize the old way of doing things isn't working, that something they can't understand is going on, and that the times truly are changing. for the second song, i don't look at as them singing autobiographically or giving the appearance even of it being some part of their psyche, as obviously they're way too harmless to be that person. i look at as more of a short story, as them telling a character's story that they created from the character's perspective. in that respect, it's believable and clever. Your interpretation is much more pleasant then mine. So don't read mine, but I am writing it anyways! To me "Save the Life of my child" depicts a macabre and dark scene, of a boy who has climbed up on the ledge of a building and is threatening to jump. A crowd of people gathers around at the base of the building and a 'freaky carnival atmosphere" develops with people excitedly taliking about what is going on instead of helping him. And he jumps at the end... You're taking the song far too literally IMHO. The key to the song being metaphorical is the line "what's becoming of the children, people asking each other." When the song came out in early 1968, lots of kids were running away, either to San Francisco or elsewhere to get away from the more rigid way of thinking 50's mentality of the older generation towards a life with more freedom and experimentation - there were drugs, the sexual revolution, the anti-war movement, civil rights riots, etc. The older generation was very concerned about what was going on with young people in the country. "Save the life of my child" was about far more than a fictional depiction of some random kid committing suicide. If you want to hear something REALLLLLY cool, listen carefully to the song from 1:18 to 1:26 and you'll hear something that for some reason most people usually miss. I listened to the song many, many times before I discovered it, but once I heard it, I hear it every time now. I don't know why people don't hear it as it isn't even disguised very well, but somehow the way it's mixed makes it initially elusive. It's only one of the elements that make the song so cool. Here it is again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=diNi6F4usCM

  29. OK, so it is time to resurrect this thread... I've begun another Alice Cooper listening marathon. (listening to his albums, studio/live/compilations) start to finish in chronological order. So, I've just finished with the Alice Cooper Group era and am absolutely astonished at the collection of music they made together in just a few short years. The first two albums "Pretties for You" and "Easy Action" were more Psychedelic/Acid Rock in nature and were released on Frank Zappa's Straight label. Bob Ezrin then took a hold of the band and they hit it big...in a big way. They (The Alice Cooper Group) released 5 albums (Love it to Death; Killer; School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies & Muscle of Love) between the years of 1971 and 1974. Four went platinum and the 5th (Muscle of Love, produced by Jack Douglas) went gold. These albums are simply amazing...if you haven't heard them start to finish, you really owe it to yourself to check them out. Up next for me, is more Alice Cooper as he goes solo with the classic, "Welcome to My Nightmare". ~Cheers, RGLT http://www.travellersintime.com/UniversalWheels/SchoolsOutImage.jpg

  36. Jesus Christ, he's 60! He's still—and always will be—a monster. Not to mention that his lifestyle on the road is physically and mentally hard, by choice. I actually he's better (not necessarily faster or more manic) now than ever. Wanna know what worries me? Never his playing or intensity—it's the motorcycling. I wouldn't worry about the riding. Motorcycling gets a bad rap basically because of riders doing dumb things or just not paying attention. That's usually what causes accidents. The 5% of riders that I know who have been in accidents are the same guys who ride like idiots. Of course, anything can happen, but Neil rides ATGATT and is a very safe rider. Regardless, IMO Neil is definitely "weakest link" in the Rush tour chain. I really believe that they'll stop touring when HE has had enough. That being said, the couple of times I saw him offstage last leg, he seemed to be in pretty good spirits - even smiling a little bit! It was... well, it was weird, but also encouraging to see that at least for now, he's not completely miserable on the road.

  38. Yeah, I agree with your accessment though "All Good Things" and "A Fistfull of Datas" are some of my favorites. I'm pretty sure A fistfull of datas was either the 6th or 7th season hmm. But they had some real stinkers too- The one where the crew devolved into amphibians or whatever Deanna Troi turned into was stupid. The one with the Masks was pretty shit too. By contrast, I can only think of one bad DS9 episode in the entire run offhand (though I'm sure there were a couple more). Remember that one where the crew went to Risa on vacation and Vanessa Willams was in it? Terrible! I couldn't believe it was the same show that gave us episodes like "Duet" and "In the Pale Moonlight". Thankfully the terrible-ness didn't last long. And damn, I can't wait for this new Trek movie to come out. LET'S GO, MAY! That's funny. Series 6 and 7 of TNG are my favourite. The only episodes I don't enjoy are Lessons and Sub Rosa. I love both Genesis and Masks. And there are so many other of my favourite episodes, like the Chain of Command 2 parter, Tapestry, Frame of Mind, Phantasms, Dark Page, Parellels, Eye of the Beholder etc Good episodes! THERE.. ARE.... FOUR... LIGHTS!!!

  40. Poor Geddy and his voice. I wish touring could be easier for him. Well, actually, what could make things a little easier would be... ...to have a tour with little singing! :o I don't know about you guys, but I could go for this: lots of tasty instru-medleys, encompassing lots of 70s stuff, interspersed with 'easier to sing' songs. Geddy's vocals are defintely Rush's fourth instrument, but if worse comes to worst, I would certainly settle for more music and less singing, if it's a matter of this or no touring at all! I wonder how many people might be interested in a mostly-musical (or even all-music) Rush concert? I would find it too intriguing to not check out! :)

  41. In "A Few Good Men" terms, these are the facts and they are indisputable: 1. They're not retiring any time soon. 2. They love playing and they love working together. 3. They want a nice break after this tour ends. 4. They're old and they have limited time to keep doing this before they can't anymore 5. R40 is a great marketing opportunity Can't say whether that translates into a tour in late 2014 or something in 2015. They probably don't even know yet. My gut says an R40 tour with a few new songs like on Time Machine that either begins late 2014 or gets pushed off till Spring 2015. Either way we will see them again and it won't be multiple years before we do. They know they have a small window at this point in their career and lives.

  45. We were "high school sweethearts". We had been together since we were 15 and 16. When we got married we were 20 and 21. our 5 year anniversary is a month away. We didn't really plan on getting married any time soon when we did. We were engaged, and things* happened, so we were like "eff it, let's do it." We had a small wedding, small reception. No biggie. Neither of us thought it was a big deal. Nothing has changed. We have always been best friends and we still are. This is why it works. We put each other before anyone else. *Things doesn't mean a pregnancy or anything like that. Living arrangements at the time, as well as my need for his insurance kind of made us do it quicker. Also, our best man was headed to Afghanistan.
