The Analog Cub
The first studio album with Neil. In this album you can definitely hear the hints of the absolute rock monsters they would become over the next few albums. This album's towards the bottom of the list for me, but it has its share of good songs, including the first truly great song they every wrote:
JohnRogers
I listened to it twice today and really liked it more than I remember. Edited February 16, 2015 by JohnRogers

treeduck
How many famous bands released their debut album in 1974??
Powderfinger
Giving it a spin now. Man, I forgot all about Alex's slide-guitar solo in "Making Memories." Good stuff! I tend to forget how I much dig this album.
JARG
An excellent album.
Empty Mindless Spectre
Great album indeed! I completely agree with you guys: By-Tor is the best song, and the slide solo is killer. Plus I'll add that Beneath, Between and Behind was the first glimpse we got of Neil's greatness as a lyricist.

The Analog Cub
How many famous bands released their debut album in 1974?? BAD COMPANY Kiss. One of the first examples that being famous doesn't necessarily make you good...
gudbuytjane
Love this album, it's definitely in the top five for me. Side one is so solid, from that 7/8 intro section to Anthem to the wind chimes at the end of By-Tor. Although the pace doesn't keep up for me on side two Fly By Night and In The End are two Rush classics, and Making Memories is a good rocker. Only Rivendell leaves me feeling flat.

EagleMoon
Damn I'm old. :codger: I was just thinking that too. I listened to FBN today just to celebrate the anniversary and man, that album was good. I miss those guys. :)
circumstantial tree
Fly By Night is my third favorite album in the top five.

YYZumbi
40 years, wow... can´t believe it´s been that long since these guys released Fly By Night. :o
JARG
While the debut album sorts of slinked its way onto the scene with the fade-in riff in Finding My Way, FBN exploded off the turntable with the bombastic opening of Anthem. It must have been hard to believe it was even the same band. "We're Rush, and we're here to kick some ass."
HemiBeers
I prefer the ATWAS recording of Bytor. The studio version is just too dry. You need the live affect of Marshall stacks melting your face and the aromatics in the air.
Lorraine
Look at all of the great songs on that album! I always think it got overshadowed by the albums that came quickly after FBN, one by one.
Disk98
Decent album. Anthem, Fly By Night, and By-Tor are classics.
treeduck
And this is the most important song on the album! They should open with this for the rest of their career!

That One Guy
Still never listened to any cuts from the album except Bytor and the title track. Not intentionally, just because I'm lazy. Also took me years of listening to the band to go "Let's try that Caress Of Steel album the critics hated"
EagleMoon
I listen to it all the time. It's a great album. Never gets old.
Relayer2112
It's funny, but when I first decided to listen to everything that Rush had to offer (early 80's), I was surprised when I found out that Fly By Night came before Caress of Steel. To this day, I think that FBN is a much tighter album both musically and lyrically compared to CoS which is kind of all over the place. I would have expected the "all over the place" on the first album where the band had a new drummer and lyricist.
tas7
Still waiting for my copy, 4 weeks after release, maybe By-Tor has run off with it.
