Raise The Red Lantern

When compiling a list of the greatest movies ever, this one would represent the 1990s

Apocalypto, again. After seeing it broadcast on BBC America, I picked up the Dvd from the library. Very interesting side piece included on production and filming, narrated by Mel Gibson and his assisting staff.

Love that movie. I must’ve seen it a dozen times easy.

I can understand that, JB. The movie was fascinating, especially after seeing some of elements of production.

The temple city set used for the sacrficial scenes was built on a scale one of the producers likened to something done by DeMille, or the set for Cleopatra. That sequence involved some 700 extras, of which around 200 involved in the sacrafice scene each had their own make up artist and hair or wig stylist.

Also interesting was the piece by Simon Atherton, armourer and weapons specialist, who Mel Gibson had previously hired for the same work in Braveheart. I've seen Native American flint edged weaponry, and can imagine how an obsidian blade could slice someone up.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Interesting film. The ending was unexpected, which is a plus. Excellent performances by everyone. To be honest, I didn’t come to like any of the characters. I guess they were just too dysfunctional for me.....

"Hostiles", with Christian Bale as an Indian-fighter reaching the end of his career. I really liked it, despite the dark thems and slow pacing. The acting was stellar, start to finish.

It kept my interest start to finish, which really all I need from a film. Some great performances across the board.

Sam Rockwell sure has made a name for himself. He’s played some mighty nasty characters!

Especially in Seven Psychopaths from the same writer director, McDounaugh. He’s my favorite living actor since PS Hoffman died.

Villain

1971, Richard Burton, Ian McShane, Nigel Davenport

Good crime drama elevated by the sheer bizarrenss of Burton's perverse character - which probably wasn;t too far from the man himself

Event Horizon (1997) (8/10)

One of my favourite science fiction movies AND horrors, but a couple of things haven't aged well: some of the CGI (obviously) and the Token Black Guy Used For Comedic Effect really brought the tone down at times. It's still an amazing movie though, really tried to tap into the sense of dread and phycological terror that made so many classic horrors of the seventies so suspenseful and memorable. Great cast too.

The Equalizer ( 2014 )

I'm not even going to look for a picture to post

I guess this is supposed to be an easy transition for the CSI audience .. or people who like the look of television commercials

embarrassing
