micgtr71
QUOTE (ghostworks @ Mar 8 2011, 07:54 PM) how can this thread have gone four pages without someone mentioning Porcupine Tree? I agree they are overrated...although I think they are wonderful.
ColdFireYYZ
Porcupine Tree are far from overrated imo. One of my top 5 bands for sure. They also put on one of the greatest live shows. Lynyrd Skynyrd also aren't overrated. Free Bird, Sweet Home Alabama, etc are overplayed but they have many other great songs. micgtr71
Sign me up for Nirvana as well. I believe that they are only as good as the tragedy that happened to them. Had he continued, they would be mediocre casino players...not a bad thing, but extremely overrated

cfmoran13
QUOTE (laughedatbytime @ Mar 8 2011, 07:51 PM)KISS I have to whole-heartedly disagree. Granted, Gene $immon$ is the biggest whore in the music business and the last 15 years have been a joke for them. However, their impact on rock music cannot be ignored any more than Nirvana's. Hell, Nirvana even covered one of their songs! They may not have been the voice of a generation as Kurt & Co. were. However, their influence on musicians over the past 30+ years is virtually beyond compare. Try finding a band that didn't get their break opening for them (including *cough* Rush) or a guitarist that didn't pick up a guitar because of them. Take "Rock and Roll All Nite" out of the mix (damn, I hate that song!) and their catalog is still pretty impressive. Their double-live album 'Alive!' was one of the first of its kind. They had 4 members who all sang lead vocals. They weren't the most proficient musicians but were all more than capable. Listen to songs like "Black Diamond", "Parasite", "Coming Home", "King Of The Night Time World", "Shock Me", "I Stole Your Love" and "Creatures Of The Night". They were a really good hard rock band. Who cares if some of their fans started listening to them because of their make-up?!? If it wasn't good music, people wouldn't have kept listening to them for as long as they have. This debate has popped up on several threads here at TRF. I agree with you. Kiss has their deserved place in rock history. Look pass the gimmicks and you have a pretty good band. By the way, "Rock and Roll All Nite" is a pretty good song!

The first time I heard Slanted and Enchanted it blew me away. Crooked Rain Crooked Rain was just as good. But after that, they pretty much leveled off and stopped pushing the envelope. I still like them a lot and Slanted and Enchanted is firmly placed in my personal top ten albums of all-time. I don't think they ripped off The Fall as much as some others do... GeddyLeeRoth
TOOL KORN (ok, they aren't too relevant anymore) DAVE MATTHEWS NIRVANA And as far as just about any band in the last ten years that has a lot of notoriety, you can add them to this list too. JohnnyBlaze
QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Mar 9 2011, 09:46 AM) QUOTE (Jaminbenb @ Mar 8 2011, 06:57 PM) Definitely Phish! I can't stand how much they play on the Jam On Channel on XM...they are nothing but Dead wanna be's and their music is BORING! I don't have a problem with the Beatles...If you REALLY dig into what they were doing at the time they were DOING it, you would appreciate, if anything, their contribution to modern recording! Globally....most artists that are "popular" today are grossly overrated due to the cookie cutter sound, they have...everything sounds like the same canned keyboards, and drums, not to mention the vocal "enhancements". Give me a live band any day! Tmd's perception of phish: "Hey guys, the grateful dead made a shitload of cash. Let's do the same!" I like Phish, but don't really like The Grateful Dead. If it were that easy to make cash by replicating the Dead then there'd be a lot more bands out there that are loaded that sound like them. And if Phish sounded more like the Dead [as you guys say] then I'd probably be a deadhead. I think you guys need to listen to a bit more Phish. As far as Jam On Channel, I've never even heard of it. I only know Phish from their cds and a few gigs.
cfmoran13
Mike Patton. I love FNM. But, the projects he's done since then are unlistenable to me. And, people consider him some kind of mad genius. Meh.

I don't think they ripped off The Fall as much as some others do... Pavement is solid! Remember the song "Shady Lane?" The lead singer mentions how he knows Geddy Lee in the song. Very cool! I see a lot of similarities throughout this thread. Sure there is some bullshit arguing going on but it seems a lot of the Rush Forumers are on the same page. Bruce Springsteen is a dead giveaway for me. I love his drummer though Max. I will confess that I liked the first 3 Bon Jovi albums but when "New Jersey" came out I was over them. "Bad Medicine." Bad record. It blows me away that Bon Jovi is more popular than ever now. Didn't they win a Grammy for a country song? It must be a chick thing. I would rather watch Jon act in "U-571" than listen to any of those Bon Jovi records. For me GREEN DAY is the most overrated band in the land. Pure ultra liberal pop wannabe punk junk wankers. A local band from my neck of the woods. They truly are all a bunch of American Idiots.

And, people consider him some kind of mad genius. Meh. I love Mike, but not these days. The last record I bought by Mike was that "Peeping Tom" record. I dumped it. I love Faith No More but you forgot a very important record in his strange canon of music! The first Mr. Bungle album is genius. I saw Mr. Bungle open for Primus on New Year's Eve back in like 1991 or something and him and his band were off the charts. They were all wearing animal masks while playing. Mike was so fukked up that he took off his Converse and pissed in it. THEN HE DRANK HIS OWN URINE! I will never forget that as long as I live. RUSHHEAD666
QUOTE (ALifeson85 @ Mar 8 2011, 07:35 PM) Two words... LYNARD SKYNARD Did you spell "Lynard Skynard" like that on purpose to mean the suck balls? I think Skynyrd was a great band but like Led Zeppelin the fukking radio overplayed them. I can't listen to "Freebird" anymore. It seems certain bands are "overplayed" making them seem like they are "overrated." That's a bummer. I'm like Pat and a few others on here. I don't waste my time listening to the radio. It's the same stuff over and over again. Sad.

softfilter
Big fan of the "overrated" Beatles and U2 (at least most of there catalog )first three albums- Boy, October, War to late 80's Joshua Tree and sporadically after,Actung Baby some of Zooropa, All That you can't Leave Behind last album i bought and liked. I must of been fooled thought they carried heart felt meaning and emotion..... but realize now they suck and are overrated... The Beatles???? really???
