A $1 billion gift to Johns Hopkins University from billionaire Mike Bloomberg will make medical school free for most students, and increase financial aid for those enrolled in nursing, public health and other graduate programs.

“As the U.S. struggles to recover from a disturbing decline in life expectancy, our country faces a serious shortage of doctors, nurses, and public health professionals — and yet, the high cost of medical, nursing, and graduate school too often bars students from enrolling,” wrote Bloomberg, a 1964 graduate of Johns Hopkins and the founder of the Bloomberg business and financial data and news company. “By reducing the financial barriers to these essential fields, we can free more students to pursue careers they’re passionate about — and enable them to serve more of the families and communities who need them the most.”

Starting this fall, Johns Hopkins will offer medical school students free tuition — normally about $65,000 a year for four years — for those whose families earn less than $300,000 a year.  Students from families earning up to $175,000 a year will have living expenses and fees covered as well.

“It’s a full-ride scholarship,” Hopkins President Ronald J. Daniels said. “We see that as a very significant move to ensure that medical education is available to the best and brightest across the country.”

Completed my patio bench project today.  Mostly completed....some sanding has to be done.

Cedar-toned treated deck boards and 2 x 4's and lots of screws!  Nice and heavy, so the storms won't take it to Kansas.....

Cancelling newspaper subscriptions has become a lot easier.  The phone representatives are not nearly as pushy as they used to be.

I liked subscribing to them, but as they've shut down their commenting forums, it's just not worth it.

I'm in the checkout at the grocery store, and the groceriesof the lady in front of me include 4 bags of Utz chips- one of them in "Mike's hot honey"  flavor.  I asked her how they tasted, and she said, "I don't know, I just grabbed them as the bags are buy two, get two free".  After she finishes checking out to she tells the employee bagging the groceries, " I'm giving these chips to this gentleman", pointing to me.  "Now you can try them out.".  I thanked her profusely, and later " paid it forward" by donating $20 to a group assisting hurricane victims.

My boyfriend’s uncle took us to a nearby local restaurant in Tijuana to get some fish tacos, they were so good.

Not today, but on Saturday I was so blessed to get married with the love of my life. :heart: This journey of nearly twelve years so far has seen a lot of pain, and even more healing, learning and connecting. We are so happy to get to spend the rest of our lives with each other.:heart:

My 5 year old little cousin, who is like a niece to me, and helped me through a very intense fibromyalgia flare up. It was the kind that felt like my bones were on fire; I was in tears and sick to my stomach because of it, but she saw me crying and gave me stuffed animals and a blanket with lots of hugs and told me that she loves me. It made me cry then and I’m crying just thinking about it.

I talked to my twin sister and my little sister on the phone. My mom told me that my brother got a new car! His previous one was totaled back in February, but he was able to walk away with just a broken toe, and the lady who totaled it was at least very honest to the insurance company about what happened.

Reading that Jimmy Carter lived long enough to vote like he'd hoped. If we were all as considerate and nice as he is, the world would be such a better place.

James Earl Carter, Jr., may the people of Earth always remember you with honor, admiration and affection.

I just finished writing my first production quality program in almost 12 years.  It feels f***ing amazing to know that I still have my chops after all these years as a Project Manager.

The guys were struggling, and no one else could have done it. So a little time to shake the rust off..... but I just finished testing the f***ing thing about half an hour ago.   No defects. Just like the f***ing old days.

I even put a quote in the comment header, again, like the old days:
"Each of us as cell of awareness, imperfect and incomplete" --Neil Ellwood Peart. Greatest drummer in the universe. RIP.

I am f***ing amped. I should never have went into project management..programming and solving problems makes me so f***ing happy.

Considering going to my first local horror convention in Ontario,CA this February and the roster looks really good with those like Jason Patric AND Alex "Bill S Preston Esq" Winter from The Lost Boys as well as Jeffrey Combs from Re-Animator among many others.  He's basically 2nd tier Bruce Campbell and I mean it as a huge compliment.

I went to the library and the Asian market with my boyfriend and his mom. I looked at some books about recipes, interior design and decorating, then I checked out Spanish grammar books and a book about 3D modeling with Blender. I also tried Vietnamese iced coffee for the first time, and it was so so good.
