Well, this is the first time that I'm not going crazy over their new material. I think its good, but not great.

I find nothing that makes me drop my jaw on these two new songs.

I have been a freak since 1981, and I'm sad to feel this way.

You people are silly calling him a teenager....most of the people who TRULY grew up in the 90's are in their 20s now. Still might be young to a lot of you, but I grew up in the 90s and I'm no teenager biggrin.gif

As for this guy's theory, I guess I could agree with him to some extent...I think people do make uneducated statements and opinions about new music (or any music really) without even giving it a chance. That being said, if you don't like a certain genre of music or don't like a certain time period, it is not always because you're "uneducated" about that certain type of music, it could just be that (GASP) you don't like it! Everyone has different likes and tastes. For some reason this is hard for most people to accept. confused13.gif

As for everyone's theory about you like what music you grew up with: no.gif

Not for me. I grew up in the 90s...hate 90s music. Can't stand it. There are a handful of 90s bands that I listen to.

I like many of today's bands and many 70s and 80s bands.

Most of the music I listen to is from 1965-1978 or thereabouts. In 1978 I was 9 years old, and the only music I was listening to back then (aside from a little disco on the radio) was Kiss. I still listen to Kiss.

I grew up with 80's music, and in the early and mid 80's I was seriously into contemporary (at the time) hard rock and heavy metal. Once I was introduced to 60's and 70's music, however, I almost completely abandoned what was currently playing that I was growing up with and turned to the older stuff. I've liked a smattering of sub-genres of music in the 90's and beyond, but mostly I've stuck with that. I listen to almost nothing from the era of music I grew up with.

I do think people need to give all eras a chance and see what they truly resonate with. It may or may not be what you grew up with.

In my opinion, 1995 is the year that good music died. Grunge started to fade then and other forms of rock music.

And in their place, all you could see were things like Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, NSync, etc...

Hard rock music of all kinds was no longer upfront and we were treated with the bands I just mentioned above and we have still to be done with that tripe.

There are good rock bands out there today, but they are so hidden, it's almost not worth the effort to try and find them.

Bands like Pink Floyd and Yes were high in the charts back in their day. What would you find now on those same charts?

yes.gif

I have always said that the early to mid 90s scene was the last time we had interesting, cool music that was also mainstream. You could hear bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains on the radio...those bands putting out quality music as well as being popular..much like Pink Floyd, Zep etc..and radio is pretty much a dead format now.

This.

Don't put so much thought into it. It's music. It's meant to be enjoyed. Listen to what you like and don't wonder why. That's the way I look at it. cosmo.gif

I usually don't respond to soapbox blowhard posts like this. I usually just role my eyes and move on but I could not resist.

It blows my mind how some people can be so pretentious and have the nerve (or bravado) to tell others that their opinion is wrong or its due to being uneducated. Everyone approaches music differently and therefore we form different opinions. To put EVERYONE who does not like something into the category of "uneducated" is just wrong. If you believe that they are ALL uneducated then that makes you extremely close-minded and unimaginative because you are unable to conceive of any other possible reasons for their opinion.

It blows my mind how some people can be so pretentious and have the nerve (or bravado) to tell others that their opinion is valid simply because they stated it (or typed it). People can listen to music or watch a movie, that doesn't qualify them to have an educated opinion. Any schmuck can pay $10 to go to a movie--then come out screaming their personal opinion as a qualified artistic criticism.

"That movie sucked."

Why did it suck?

"Because it was long and I didn't get the ending."

Maybe you suck?

"Huh?"

The moral of my little scene -- it's better to say, "That movie wasn't to my liking. I'm sure it was well produced, well edited and directed, but I generally prefer porn with costumes and a story."

If you believe that your critical opinion has validity, then back it up with something that indicates you have a background to make the comment. Be careful though, for if you are a fraud, you will be exposed.

simply put, show me any real band or artist with any longevity that is the same musically that they were then at the last recording?

Elvis, no

Beatles, no

Stones, no

Aerosmith, no

U2, no

songs are written in the present, they reflect the thoughts, emotions and events going on around them at the time they are written and recorded. how many of us are the same person we were 10, 15, 20 or more years ago?

I find that laughable for some reason, but I guess it's to each their own!

Good Lord.  I'm not going to waste any more time on this pointless discussion.  I'm going to do what I should have done when I first saw this thread: roll my eyes and just walk on by.

Christ on a Cracker. I'm not going to waste any more time trying make this guy understand that opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. Educated opinions, however, are like big cocks, we all like to think we have one. I'm going to do what I should have done when I first saw his pithy little rant: roll my eyes and just walk on by.

Why is this laughable to you? Because you don't agree? Do you treat every subject like this? I'm just trying to understand you here. You feel the need to make fun of me because I share different musical tastes than you. Hmmm.

Well here, let me break it down for you.

I don't like Korn. I don't like Nirvana. I don't like Pearl Jam. I don't like Smashing Pumpkins. I don't like The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I don't like Green Day. I just don't like grunge, and the 90s was very grunge-y. The thing about this though, is that I'm not saying those bands "suck" or that they're "bad". Many of those bands are very talented. I just can't get into their music. That's a matter of taste for me. I don't understand why people feel defensive when you say you don't like a certain style/band/time period/whatever that they like. There's nothing to defend. It's not like you're going to change my mind. I gave them a chance. I can't get into them.

A couple 90s exceptions that I absolutely love: The Offspring, Nine Inch Nails, Dream Theater.

You and I think a lot alike. yes.gif I hate all the same bands you do! ohmy.gif

I also harbor an intense hatred of grunge (and I think the lead singer of Green Day sounds as if his nose is plugged with 15 gallons of snot. He sounds terribly congested).

Like you, not saying that these acts aren't talented, or that people who do like them have no taste. It just isn't MY taste.

I spent a lot of the 90's avoiding radio altogether.

I wish I could avoid some of them but my boyfriend is a huge Korn fan so I hear it all the time. I just can't stand Korn. I understand that he loves them, I understand why he loves them, and I even helped him find several Korn albums that he didn't have. But me, just doesn't do anything for me. He understands my Rush so I try to understand his haha.

But I mean, I really find it humorous when people try to fight you over what YOU like. It makes no sense.
