"I believe that life is just a ride. And on that ride we get distracted and angry at things that happen along the ride. And occasionally somebody comes along and says, 'hey, don't take it too seriously because it's just a ride.' And we kill those people." -- Bill Hicks

A Priest walks by and the Guy says "Hey can you help me out?"

At the risk of quoting CS Lewis on a Rush forum, I submit the following, which is actually quite libertarian:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

You have my permission to quote C. S. Lewis anytime you like! trink39.gif

Yay, philosophy! Nothing's better than a bunch of depressed guys.

This is technically from Specters of Marx, but I like it in relation to Derrida's final interview, Learning to Live Finally "To live, by definition, is something one learns. Not from oneself, it is not learned from life, taught by life. Only from the other and by death" (14) I could probably quote that entire text (not from memory).

From Entre Nous not by RUSH (hehe!) but by Levinas. tongue.gif "... one hand touches the touching... it as if space were touching through man" (112). "... the essential thing is to approach unity. The essential thing is fusion. We say that love is a fusion, that it triumphs in fusion" (113). And basically the rest of that chapter, especially where he praises the ladies. wink.gif

And...

"I always wanted to be somebody. Now I see that I should have been more specific." -Lily Tomlin, which I happened to have taken out of Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates, which I highly recommend over any other philosophical text any day.

I wonder if a favorite of Neil's is the old Sartre quote:

Hell is other people.

Sometimes I find myself in agreement, though usually not...

I think he's more inspired by Being and Nothingness and Essays in Existentialism.

Wouldn't it be an oxymoron to be inspired by existentialism?

Everything Neil Peart has EVER said.

...Okay, okay, that's pushing it, but in truth I really am inspired by him.

(I pretty much idolize that man.)
