Former singer Charlie Dominici died today.

RIP

Very sad. Played that first album into the ground for almost three years thinking it would be the only one. Was lucky enough to see Dream Theater open up for Marillion in '89 not knowing they were the opening band until I turned the corner and saw them on the marquee (Spelled wrong of course.)

His three solo album projects are very ambitious and they're good for what they are but the last two are a bit too "metal" for me.

Very nice guy too. Bought an autographed album flat when he was raising money for a move or a tour or something. Think he was also in Frankie and the Knockouts in the early '80s.

Old school.

I got into DT during the images and words era but did not hear wdadu until later. Would of been cool to have learned of them earlier.

Seeing them open for Morrilton? Sweet

Kind of old news but I didn't see it here so..

Seems to be going as expected so far. A bit surprised that he says there wasn't much discussion about details before the decision was made so hopefully that will work out.  Seems to project the right kind of attitude about it at least.

i don't like it.......it's goner back to a sound of my least fav DT era........SC and BC.......as i feared.

Blech. and why does the production sound like a sock is over each speaker.

It's ok. Pretty much what I expected. Besides The Astonishing, I really liked everything they did with Mangini. So, while I didn't feel like a change was necessary, I totally get why Portnoy was brought back.

to be clear i sounded harsh but i don't hate it.  I don't particulary like it either.

it's just the EXACT song i expected when MP signed back on.  to the note.

oh......knew this part was coming.......that part too.....MP will pull this fill out........NOW, lol

I had to shut it off because I was listening at lunch and my coworkers walked in, but I got most of the way through and honestly really loved it! Didn’t know how much I missed the time permutations of old until they reappeared with Portnoy here, and Rudess and Petrucci were both shredding. Dig James here too, he’s in a comfortable part of his range, and making the best use of it!

You make it sound like your co-workers walked in on a lunchtime wank!

The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Yes, it does have echoes of stuff they did in the past, but at this stage in their careers, they will not do anything groundbreaking. Also, their singles are usually not the best track on their albums. Looking forward to the full release!

I love them to death, and I like the song even if it is kind of long winded.

Hate to say it, but DT might want to look at a Black Album approach. Shorter yet heavy songs.

Have not listened to a note of this and won't until the artbook hits the mailbox in February. My hope was that some envelopes would be pushed but my expectations if there are any are more realistic.

Yeah I don’t see them doing anything envelope pushing for Portnoy’s first album back. I’m sure Mike is doing his best not to be overbearing so he can be sure this reunion works, plus I’m extra sure the rest of the band still remembers The Astonishing.

The first single shows that he is being overbearing though. It sounds exactly like what the band was before he left. They didn't have that vibe at all with Mangini. Portnoy is also doing the setlist again. So yeah, he's back to running things.
