Studio album number 8, the Ocho! How time flies; The Raven still feels new to me and that's now 12 years old. It's cool that he's returning to a new space themed concept album with two epic tracks. He's turning back to prog but I imagine it'll have a bit of electronic stuff he's had in his last two albums.

Tracklist:

1. OBJECTS OUTLIVE US (23.17)

2. THE OVERVIEW (18.27)

A little bummed he changed the album cover from the original concept:

The new cover looks more like a back cover than a proper album cover.

Yeah, you're right about that . . .

Which version have you ordered?

I ordered a CD + Black LP copy off Amazon. I'd buy the red vinyl from Townsend but I've seen them muck up a lot of their releases. Plus the Amazon LP appears mispriced at $15 USD atm. I've been picking up a lot of new vinyl when it fits neatly on one LP vs spreading out a 50 minute album across two discs.

Hopefully (from my perspective) more emphasis on the 'Proggier' side of things!

The trailers are pretty promising. I can't imagine he'll be dropping any singles for this:

Looking forward to this. I appreciate him putting out two albums in 18 months, seems like a rarity now

I didn't hate The Future Bites and liked a lot of parts of the songs, but overall it felt more like an experiment than a success. The Harmony Codex was for me, a 10/10 album and the best thing he'd done since Hand Cannot Erase. I'm jazzed for this new album.

i wasn't huge on TFB i thought his no guitar mandate was......as a fan........dumb.

Harmony Codex immediatly brought back the guitars.  they weren't all over but they were there.  It felt like the Steven Wilson i became a fan of.

I'm not against him wanting to experiment without guitars. He said if Porcupine Tree were to make more music, he'd hope it sounds like Walk The Plank. I'd fully welcome an experimental album like that.

No guitars wasn't my main problem with TFB, which again I can generally enjoy.

I didn't like how R&B/poppy he got on stuff like Eminent Sleaze or King Ghost. I loved what he did with the electronic effects in general and some of the other songs like Personal Shopper or 12 Things I Forgot had some really good parts.

Walk The Plank was a really interesting one. Barbieri always has the magic touch.

The B-sides are the tracks that really shined and they went even further into electronica. A pity those never made the final cut.

I recently listened to a Barbieri solo album (Lumen). It showed me just how much integral Barbieri is to PT's sound. It almost tricked me into thinking I was listening to their earlier material.

Those first 2 albums were pretty good.  The mid 80's were so much fun....

I've got those first two and the others on vinyl but no CD versions of the other three. Jason Becker plays guitar on the 1991 album.

I'm hoping with this new album SW will turn this thread into the new hard rock and heavy metal area of the forum, where all the denim and leather clad TRFers reside, giving voice to their heavy metal prayers and proverbs.

Super Deluxe ordered. Headphones ready for lift off.

Dissappointed he ignored Floirda yet again.

Porcupine Tree needs to tour again and be a lot more extensive. He has legions of fans in the South.

Loved The Harmony Codex and it was a return to form after his last solo electronic album fell real flat with me.

Sad to see it's just two epics to be honest. Grace For Drowning was almost 2 hours long for reference (OK, I guess including the Raider II demo in that is cheating - but all the other outtakes are just as good as the first two album parts) :)

Excited not only that it's a return to Prog, but to space rock - Up The Downstair anyone? Yeah, I know it'll be completely different...

All else fails, just a couple more years until we have fully convincing AI generated music for all our once-favorite musicians.

This is pretty good, almost there:

Holy cow this a beast. I'm working my way through the second playthrough and this is a wonderful continuation of the stuff he was exploring on The Harmony Codex

Not 100% sure how much I like it yet. Seems to me he’s trying to make DSOTM for the 21st Century.
