Turbine Freight Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 Crystal Ball was a single but I don't think it was a hit. I'll pick that if it qualifies. 2
Entre_Perpetuo Posted July 9, 2024 Author Posted July 9, 2024 For the sake of argument, I’d qualify anything on Styx’s greatest hits album as a hit, considering I’ve definitely heard every song from it on classic rock radio in my life. 1

Also they had a tonne of songs stand out in a time when a minor rock hit would be the equivalent of the biggest rock hit of the decade today lol 2

Tinwoodsman Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 They have so many good songs, it is difficult to pick. They have a decent discography. There was a plethora of songs that did not become hits. Tough to pick. Thanks for the thread. 2

bluefox4000 Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 I literally never was able to understand older rock/metal fans aversion to ballads. it's a weird rule they have.o lol Mick 1

When i am not in the mood for Styx its generally because i cant tolerate his style at that given moment. The hard rockers? Always up for them. I think it's just how hallads fit into the bands general style, because sometimes ballads cone off like an attempt to reach a bigger audience, not to further progress their own special qualities as a band. Extreme's More Than Words comes to mind (and I was shocked when I listened to more from them...).
goose Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Tommy Shaw's stuff tops my list of Styx songs, followed by Drnnis DeYoung. Not much of a fan of James' stuff, or his voice

Not much of a fan of James' stuff, or his voice it's funny if you listen to early albums JY is way more promoted as the lead guy. he has a lot of leads. in that way i'm glad dennis stepped up more. He's a GREAT guitarist but his leads are often the low spots on the albums for me. Mick 1
Entre_Perpetuo Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 Here’s how I’d rank everything on the greatest hits album, off the top of my head, best to worst: Come Sail Away Fooling Yourself Blue Collar Man Renegade The Grand Illusion Too Much Time On My Hands The Best Of Times Mr. Roboto Crystal Ball Lorelei Babe Lady Miss America Suite Madame Blue Don’t Let It End Show Me The Way I don’t have anything against ballads, and I think Styx were amazing balladeers, but they played that card maybe a few too many times imo, and they start to run together after Paradise Theater. 1
laughedatbytime Posted July 10, 2024 Posted July 10, 2024 Not a hit, but Heavy Metal Poisoning is always a fun listen. 1
