Do you not read biographies in general, or do you just avoid ones related to music you enjoy?

Ha, good one....

I'm not really a fan of biographies at all come to think of it......

Just finished. VERY enjoyable read and very informative… and yes, the parts that you assumed would be sad, were extremely sad…. But, plenty of cool nuggets and joyous moments.

Finding out that they had “certain” habits and vices that were similar to other Rock bands of the day was a bit like finding out that Santa Claus wasn’t real… but, very honest and human.

That's nice dear.....I still have no intention of buying it...to clarify, I like Rush's music....I have ZERO interest in their lives outside of this.

I got my audio copy free.  Like you, I have no interest in buying a physical copy

Fridge, I was making a general statement about negative and miserable people on many commenting forums, like the football example that snowdog2112 gave.

I was definitely not talking about you.  I've never seen any of your posts as miserable.

Well, I wouldn't go that far

I'm most of the way through this now, up to 1989 and Presto.

I can't overstate what a joy this audiobook has been. It works as a heartfelt, warm, personal memoir but it's also a goldmine of experiences and anecodotes from the Rush touring and recording years. Like others here I was an enthusiastic consumer of those records and tours so to hear these insights, all these years later has been amazing. Geddy covers the whole spectrum, from the consequences of the amount of time he spent on the band to his marriage and how he tried to fix it, to nerd details like why the mixing desk at Trident is better than the one at Advision.

No spoilers here but there's a very humble and sincere reminiscence from Alex, voiced by the man himself on the audiobook, about the recording of Power Windows that's touchingly personal.

Not that he owed it to us, but - this is something like the book we wished Neil had written, though we knew he never would have wanted to. He could have written a brilliant Rush memoir, at least covering 1974 onwards. It would have been massive.

Still - we got one anyway.

Here's a fun fact.

At Geddy's wedding reception, Neil Peart and John Rutsey sat at the same table

Ok, after seeing the reviews and opinions of many others, I am engaging in a humiliating climbdown and have ordered the hardcover....I'll let you know my opinions of it when I read it.

Feel free to let the flaming commence :blast:

Since my copy is coming in December at the Toronto show, I opted for the audiobook rather than buying a second copy of the book.

Folks, the audiobook is so good.  This is actually the first audiobook I've ever listened to, but hearing Geddy tell these stories himself (I haven't gotten to the parts where Al shows up yet) is really special.  He's a great narrator, and I love the Yiddish accents he uses for his family members.  It really brings things to life.

I listened for an hour before work this morning and I can't wait to get back to it...

I finished the book today and would echo these sentiments about the audiobook. Geddy has a wonderful, storyteller's delivery and it's nice to hear him chuckling while telling some of the funnier stories. Plus - Alex has a couple of cameos, as well.

I must say though, the two unreleased MFH outtakes tacked on the end are awful, both really inelegant dirges. But then I don't like MFH at all.

Wow, ancient history!

Last we chatted you were doing some work way up north. Where are you now?

Hey Mike, hope you're well!

I am! The whole family is doing great. My wife and I were in Holland this past spring for her work... hopefully there will be more of that in the future and it will give us a chance to get back to the UK. Have not been there since we met up. Would love to get a cup of tea again. Hope all is good on your end.

I quite enjoyed the songs, but the production was definitely demo quality.  It's a shame they weren't properly recorded.

My days in the far north are finished, I'm working closer to home now as a meteorological technician, repairing and calibrating weather instrumentation.  It's not as exciting as what I was doing before, but it's a good job and the stability is a nice change!

After escorting them [the girls] out into the hallway, Gene followed, grabbed me and pushed me against the wall, demanding to know why I’d given them the boot.

“Hey, man” I said, “they were bumming everyone out!”

He said “Yeah, but….” and he angrily shared with me a few words that could only be described as a lesson in female anatomy.  I’ll leave it at that.  So effin’ uncool.

———————————————————————————

Don’t leave it at that, Geddy!   TELL US EVERYTHING…..

Finished six chapters. Have to force myself to slow down. (Trying to balance it by reading Romano's Moving Pictures which obviously isn't nearly as good in comparison) More than a quarter of the way through and they just got to the first album. Seems like a lot is going to be left out. (Still want a copy of the 1200 page manuscript.) Love the pictures, didn't realize some of them were color but I finally found them.

So, I just HAVE to share this little event. I was just down in Duluth and purchased the hard cover of the book. No audio version so I will still have to get that. After leaving Barnes and Noble, we were driving around and stopped at a pharmacy and got a pop and a couple of things. The cashier noticed the Canuck accent and asked if we were visiting and how was our stay? I said, as I always plug the band whenever I can, that we were down to shop and that I had gotten a copy of Geddy Lee's new book at the mall because it wasn't up in Thunder Bay yet. She gave me a blank look and I said "He's the singer from Rush?"

She politely nodded and said "That'll be $21.12". I chuckled. Then I realised she was being serious!

All my life I notice anything referencing 2112 as I am sure we all do, here on the forums?

I looked at the till and sure enough, the amount owing on the little window was exactly 2112. I made a bookmark out of it and it will stay with the book.

Cool, huh?

:geddy:

Edit: And can I please ask, from where are people purchasing the audio book as a CD/Hard copy? I want the option to use in different devices.

I googled around and there was a copy on Amazon, but there must be an actual official site for purchasing? Rush.com, Geddy this and that, I don't see anything official to get a CD as such?

Thanks for any affirmative suggestions.

Steve Lillywhite can go f**k himself apparently. LMAO.

That's one of the things that really surprised me the most about this autobio. The fact that Geddy really let go of that stereotypical "Canadian politeness" and let his true feelings be known about people, things, and situations that he didn't like. I liked that, I found it to be a really refreshing look into who Ged really is as a person. Sure, he's a sweetheart, but he's just as willing as anybody else to hate people who disrespect him or treat him like shit or take advantage of his kindness. Kinda reminds me of the old saying "Never mistake kindness for weakness."

Another thing that was pretty eye-opening was the fact that Geddy had to deal with his fair share of crazy obsessed stalker fans, like the guy who was convinced that all of the songs on Presto were written about him...And the fact that some kid literally broke into Geddy's house in hopes of meeting him was just insane to read about.

That was the beauty of Presto, it applies to so many lives.

I'm listening to the audiobook and loving it.

Biggest surprises:

1) the separate lives that Ged and his wife have lived

2) Neil's drug use (Alex was no surprise)

3) Alex drunkenly destroying the hotel room in England for no reason sounded suspiciously similar to his felony charges at the Florida resort

I wish the polite Canadian stereotype would just die already. There are plenty of Canadians who are massive dicks. In fact, 93% of the city of Toronto are dicks, along with every single driver on the 401.

Proud to be in the 7% along with Mr. Weinrib...
