Ladies and gentlemen, I present to year the greatest most consistently incredible year in all of recorded music. I don't think there's a single album on this list not considered one of the best form that particular artist, if not simply the best. And in most cases the artists releasing these albums are considered among the best of all time. If it says 1973 on it, buy it. You can quibble about the indulgence of Tales From Topographic Oceans and A Passion Play, or the perhaps underdeveloped state of some of the debuts here like Queen and Aerosmith, but in my book nothing released this year ever seems to be less than stellar.

I mean look at this list:

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (apart from being part of their classic run, it's also a massive fan favorite and my personal favorite)

DSOTM (enough said)

SEBTP (cited as the second greatest prog album ever at Prog Archives, and not without reason)

APP (I've listened to it three times in two days, my first three times, in fact I'm about to play it again now)

HOTH (No Quarter, Over The Hills And Far Away, The Rain Song, The Ocean, THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME, even Dy'er Mak'r is classic!)

Tres Hombres (often cited as the best ZZ Top album, an opinion I very nearly agree with)

Queen I (one of the greatest debut albums of all time, and one of those bands that knew exactly who they were from album 1, LIAR!)

NTYBOAF (I haven't heard this but I've seen the album cover tied to a lot of rave reviews)

Band On The Run (one of the greatest Beatles solo albums...so basically one of the greatest albums of all time)

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (enough said)

Larks' Tongues In Aspic (often cited as KC's greatest triumph, if not ITCOTCK or Red, the next one on my list of KC records to listen to)

Quadrophenia (this has long been in the running for my second favorite album by anyone ever, enough said)

Aladdin Sane (enough said)

Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy (haven't heard it yet, but can Return To Forever possibly do wrong in the early-mid 70s?)

Vagabonds Of The Western World (some days this feels like my favorite Lizzy album, Eric Bell!)

Who Do We Think We Are (well this one does get some lower reviews, but I'm told it has at least one classic, and Deep Purple sold the most records in the US out of anyone in 73)

Birds Of Fire (legendary)

Billion Dollar Babies (enough said)

In A Glass House (forget Octopus, this thing has the audacity to open with the crashes of breaking glass, and the music that follows is no less audacious or smashing)

Montrose (I just heard this for the first time recently and I was blown away. EVH obviously loved this one based on the guitar tone, and Sammy!)

Light As A Feather (Spain, enough said)

Tyranny And Mutation (I haven't heard it yet, but it's often cited as one of BOC's very very best albums)

Brain Salad Surgery (everything that was great about Tarkus and Trilogy but more of it, probably my fav ELP album)

Tubular Bells (yeah, that Tubular Bells, what other one is there?)

two records from Nazareth (if either of these are half as good as Hair Of The Dog, I'd say Nazareth were having a great 1973)

Aerosmith (Dream On, Mama Kin, enough said)

Crystal Silence (I just looked it up and it only has two credited musicians playing only vibraphone and piano...I'm sure it's mind falteringly incredible)

Spectrum (just looked it up, well AllMusic Guide gives it 5/5 and it seems to be a landmark release for Jazz Fusion)

Goats Head Soup (sure it sits in the shadow of the four that preceded it, but it also has Angie on it....ANGIE, and 100 Years Ago!)

Grinding Stone (I haven't heard it but it's the debut of the one and only Gary Moore and it has a 17 minute long song on it, it's probably great)

Twice Removed From Yesterday (I haven't heard it, but it's another debut of another guitar master of the 70s)

We're An American Band (well it's got the title track on it, it must be awesome!)

TSYDTPYG (anything with a title like that from the inimitable Joe Walsh must be an essential experience)

Heartbreaker (haven't heard it but let's see....opening track has been covered by major artists many times, third straight top 10 affair, precedes Bad Co.'s excellent debut)

Sweet Freedom (haven't heard, but follows the often praised Magician's birthday and reached 33 on the Billboard 200)

Raw Power (enough said)

New York Dolls (haven't heard, but I've heard about it many many times)

EDIT:

Tales From Topographic Oceans (enough said)

The Six Wives Of Henry the VIII (often cited as one of Wakeman's two absolute best albums, if not his best one)

And I'm sure there are many more. This year is just impossible.

Here are more

-The Allman Brothers Band - Brothers And Sisters

haven't heard it but I've seen it sure get a ton of rave reviews)

-Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure

seems to be quite well loved

-Bob Marley - Catch A Fire

often cited as one of his absolute best

-Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park

The Boss' debut, from what I've heard it's nothing to scoff at

-Chicago VI

maybe not at the level of their first few, but still a classic

-Steely Dan - Countdown To Ecstasy

more like countdown to excellence

-Mott The Hoople - Mott

I've read this is one of their best

-Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On

haven't heard it but it must sound familiar for a reason

-The Doobie Brothers - The Captain And Me

seems to be considered a very successful record

-Can - Future Days

Another one I haven't heard but have seen recommended many many times

-The Eagles - Desperado

if it weren't for Hotel California, this would probably have gone down as their best album

-Lynryd Skynyrd - Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd

holy smokes!!

-Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent, And The E Street Shuffle

a classic in its own right, Rosalita!

-ELO 2 and On The Third Day

-Camel self titled

-The Beatles Red and Blue compilation albums, which in the world of greatest hits albums are among the best of all time. I know we're talking studio albums in these threads but these two compilations I'd venture to argue have been just as responsible for making fans out of casual listeners as many of the studio albums have

-Zarathustra - Museo Rosenbach

one of the greatest Italian prog albums of all time

-Styx II

the one with Lady!

-The Joker - The Steve Miller Band

-Welcome - Santana

Santana dives straight into fusion territory, a lot of old fans leave, but pretty well regarded if you like fusion

-REO Speedwagon - Ridin' The Storm Out

-Le Orme - Felona E Sorona

forget just being one of the great Italian prog albums, it's one of the best prog albums of all time, at least in my book

My God, what a choice!

Selling England By The Pound is one of my all time favourite albums by anyone, so that’s where my vote lands.

DSOTM, is awesome too. Obviously.

-Bob Marley - Catch A Fire

often cited as one of his absolute best

Without a doubt for me, this beats everything on the list except Dark Side of the Moon. In terms of greatness and absolute career pinnacle, it’s like Marley’s Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures

Entre Perpetuo has convinced me there's no way to do this and still be right. I'm like Walt Whitman right now: I contain multitudes, and they all want to pick a different album!

DSOTM

Houses of the Holy (in _spite of_ "D'yer M'ker"!)

Passion Play

Brain Salad Surgery

Vagabonds of the Western World

plus Yes, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, on and on

Hell of a year indeed. And I thought 69 and 71 were hard..

Masterpieces from Genesis, Zeppelin, Krimson, The Who (!!!), Elton John, ELP, Billy Cobham... (Tull was a disappointment.)

However, above all: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

I had about 8 of those albums in the original 40 list but that wasn't the end of the process.
