  1. I listen to plenty of music and have gone to tons of shows over the last 20 something years and yes, Rush's show is as good as you think it is. The only other band I've seen that's right up there with them is Iron Maiden. And no, not every band plays 3 hours like they do. That's another thing that makes their shows so special and that's why all their tours since 1996 are marketed as "An Evening With RUSH". Most other tours you go to you will at least have to sit through a couple openers. If you're going to a festival that has a bunch of bands on it then you'll be sitting through multiple bands before the headliner even comes on if you choose to spend the whole day at one of those concerts. The usual set time for most headlining bands if they have enough material to play is about 90-120 minutes. There's no intermission during these headlining sets, the band just plays right through. There are also several other issues that can unfortunately cut into a headlining bands set time. There could be technical issues with setting up or taking down one of the opening bands equipment or even issues with the headlining bands stage setup. Venues also have curfews and if something goes wrong and the headliner gets on late then they may have to cut their set short in order not to be fined for going over the curfew. These issues don't happen that often but they do happen enough for you to know what's going on if you've been to enough shows. That's the beauty of seeing Rush live. No openers means that their equipment is up and read to go. You don't have to worry about anything since they're the only band playing so you know you're gonna get a full show. Even if they show up a little late, the curfew at most places is 11pm so you don't have to worry about them cutting their show short unless it's outdoors and there's bad weather or something. Rush is the only band off the top of my head I can think of who consistently does the "evening with" format. Not too many other bands take on that challenge. Rush does and they complete the task masterfully at every show. Their concerts are special because they do the one thing that makes it special, they give the fans nothing but Rush for three hours.

  2. Was thinking the other day that Ive got tons of slides and negatives sitting in my basement from various rush shows I attended back in the 70s and 80s. These pictures have never been seen by anybody by myself, so I thought it was about time I shared them. Hope you enjoy! Ill add pics as I dig them up and scan them, but for now here is a set that were taken over two nights at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto during the Moving Pictures tour I believe. I believe the dates were March 23 & 24, 1981. http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH040_zpsf9a043e5.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH039_zpsb347694a.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH034_zps8131cfa4.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH031_zpseb56fecf.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH033_zpsae655ed5.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH016_zps0af3d33a.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH012_zpsc53d41c9.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH001_zps74c7b16c.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH024_zps9661066d.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH006_zps38708026.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH005_zps78d2358c.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH002_zpsed85a8f2.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH004_zpsfdc2246f.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH010_zps34f15304.jpg

  6. Alright, ladies! I've finally got my concert photos organized. I'm going to post a bunch of 'em! And, just FYI: the battery died in my zoomy camera during the first set (:(), but luckily I had my now-old camera as back-up, so this explains the differences in zoom. And also for anyone interested, these photos were taken from pretty much centre of the 14th row on the floor (with lots of heads and body parts blocking a lot of my view). Here goes: http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g454/GoddessMika/Rush/Vancouver%202013-07-26/Vancouver%20130726/DSCN0709_zps7d58029d.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g454/GoddessMika/Rush/Vancouver%202013-07-26/Vancouver%20130726/DSCN0713_zpscb0d440a.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g454/GoddessMika/Rush/Vancouver%202013-07-26/Vancouver%20130726/DSCN0716_zps22d5d287.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g454/GoddessMika/Rush/Vancouver%202013-07-26/Vancouver%20130726/DSCN0717_zpsff86e732.jpg http://i1102.photobucket.com/albums/g454/GoddessMika/Rush/Vancouver%202013-07-26/Vancouver%20130726/DSCN0744_zps2c39923f.jpg

  9. Next stop on the Time Machine Tour is September 2nd 1979 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. This was a weird show for the band as it seemed to be put together pretty hastily, and the fact that they were playing a University football field instead of one of the larger arenas or stadiums was a little odd. Also, Permanent Waves was nowhere near release, so the tour really wasn't in support of anything. What made this show interesting was that the weather was not very cooperative. It didn't rain during the show as I recall, the natural turf on the field was very wet, and was soon being hurled around as "sod bombs". The entire field would need to be replaced, and that show was the last ever at that venue. Also, wind and the threat of storms forced the band to scale back on their set up. No video screen were used, the dry ice just blew away, and their was no pyro. Even Howard's light show suffered as the usual "audience smoke" just blew away, leaving nothing for his lights to reflect off of. So the show was pretty basic, reminding me of a club show. Anyway, enjoy the pics :) Aforementioned "Sod Bomb" http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH140_zps40439585.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH130_zpsdac487f9.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH143_zps34676677.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH145_zps262f6427.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH137_zps14b804de.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH135_zps47ba7dc5.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH134_zpsc9d878f4.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH133_zpse4cbeba8.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH132_zps50a8ac47.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH127_zps12d5ab2f.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH139_zps68910c66.jpg http://i761.photobucket.com/albums/xx257/andreww1962/RUSH144_zpsa42e74ab.jpg

  15. Yeah, but the problem is everyone has different ideas as to what the "expendable" songs are. I'd keep almost every tune you listed and jettison other tracks. If Rush had cut these albums down before releasing them, I bet they'd have chosen to dump some tracks that I really like. They were disappointed with how Emotion Detector turned out, and that's my favorite tune on Power Windows—wouldn't want to imagine the album without that one.

  17. Take 'Everyday Glory' off Counterparts? Are you nuts?! :P But seriously. I don't like breaking Rush songs into 'killer' and 'filler', as it were; I think every song has something to offer. I would be very bereft without some of the songs you mentioned, most notably 'EG'. This is one of the songs that really sold me on Rush, and is among probably the top five Rush songs nearest and dearest to my heart. I understand the thinking of condensing albums, but back in the day when albums were shorter... well, albums were shorter. Just think how things might have been different if records held the 80 minutes that cds do; can you picture a few more songs added to 'Moving Pictures'? Would they have been filler, I wonder, or would they have been classics as the album is generally regarded as being? Some of the songs you mentioned are kind of at the bottom in my opinion, but I don't think I would want to remove them - I've developed a strong liking for some albums and couldn't picture them being the same with a few songs missing. Of course, if I didn't know they were there in the first place, if the albums had originally been recorded without those songs and they never existed.... I guess we get used to what we know, and it's hard to picture things altered. Interesting notion, though. But negative points for being mean to 'Everyday Glory'! :P :P

  19. Some think there are a few/most on this list that are mediocre to bad songs. And there's a vice-versa to that argument. I feel the soul and passion in every one of these songs is there. It's a different strokes for different folks. So they're not for nothing. In other words: No.

  21. I know exactly what you are saying. I love the guys and think they are probably still the best working band on the planet, but I will say that they are not the same band that they were back in the 70's and early 80s. As far as I'm concerned the peaked at about the time of ESL. In those days you could see how hard they worked on stage. Double neck guitars, Taurus pedals, synths, all played at the same time using hands, feet, elbows, and even Geddy's nose at times. After ESL the technology had developed enough that allowed them to use guitar effects instead of doublenecks, sequenced sounds triggered by touching a synth key. The band sounds better, but a lot of the magic was in that dance that they did to create those sounds. They are still a 10 out of 10 band, but back then they were a 12 out of 10 :)

  24. Apologies if this has already been addressed, but I was curious to know what everyone does for a living. I personally would like to contribute to the forum more but I'm always busy with work or raising my daughter that will be 2 next Wednesday and preparing for my son's arrival in mid-August. I am an active-duty Marine and have been since October 2002. It's been interesting so far, and I'm over the hump so in less than 10 years I can start collecting a decent pension and hopefully get a good job with a logistics company. What about everyone else?

  25. Why is Vapor Trails considered a weaker album, production values aside? I believe that VT is just as strong as Clockwork Angels—and Geddy's vocals are outstanding in every track. Ghost Rider, Vapor Trails, Sweet Miracle, How it is, Ceiling Unlimited, Freeze—seriously this album is awesome! Why the hate?

Good to see that Mr. My-Opinions-are-Facts Rushgoober has found this thread. I'm only too happy to oblige. :P Goober, you are really starting to worry me! How can you say that Roll the Bones is a Mediocre or Bad album when it holds songs like: Dreamline, Bravado, Roll the Bones, Where's My Thing? and Ghost of a Chance. In your defense, you did mention all the songs that have SOME merit. All the songs you didn't mention are complete garbage. Dreamline is admittedly excellent. A top notch amazing Rush song. Bravado is OK. I used to like it a little more than that, but it just never really grabbed me like it grabs a lot of people. I feel the same way about Available Light. Just kind of meh for me, decent, nothing earth shattering. Roll the Bones - absolutely destroyed by the horrendous rap. Where's My Thing - well, the best thing I can say about it is there are no lyrics to botch the song up. Other than that, it's decent. It's completely blown away by 2112 Overture, La Villa, YYZ and the three instrumentals from S&A, however. Nice, but nothing special that I'd go out of my way to hear. Ghost of a Chance - a very pretty sounding song and very melodic, I just disagree with it philosophically to such a large degree that it's hard for me to really enjoy it or want to sing along with it. Really, RTB is all about Dreamline for me. There are other OK songs, a few truly bad ones. Not a great Rush album by any stretch... I agree its not a great Rush Album, but its not mediocre either. It just a good album and I'll leave it at that. :codger: I wouldn't call it mediocre either. Presto is mediocre. RTB is generally just a pretty bad album. I feel like this is the proper response to 95% of all of RushGoober's posts.

  42. Okay, the time machine is going back three years, almost to the day. Its March 25, 1978 and I was a 15 year old kid on vacation with his family in Fort Lauderdale Florida. 44. To me it's a classic case of lyric lines being too long and not at all meeting up with the melody. Plus the lyrical content is goofy...still not sure how Ged sang them with conviction. Interesting musical moments: Alex's acoustic work, Neil's choked splash cymbal. It's just seems like such a contrived song overall. Pretty much agree. The repetitive chorus goes on too long at the end. Don't hate this or any Rush song though.

  45. 'Faithless' could have been written for me. On an album full of outstanding material this one still does it for me every time. One of the best songs by anyone, ever.

  46. Counterparts tour was my 2nd favorite behind Power Windows. Hemispheres/Prelude was Awsome.

  48. The Hemispheres segment especially. So what if it was only four and a half minutes long? I just about lost it, totally. I get to re-live it every time I watch the Auburn Hills DVD, which was only two days before I saw them in Cincinnati.
