Classic Rock Interview w/ Alex & Geddy

I don't understand why we spend so much damn time debating whether or not it is the end. R40 may very well be the last big tour. There could be smaller tours, there may not be. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best and never expect a definitive answer for this band. Whatever happens will happen and I'll be glad to have been able to experience and enjoy this band, even if for just a short while.

Because we're die-hard Rush fans. It's what we do. :)

Hey, hey. Now that's a reasonable opinion.

Dang voices of reason. :)

Did anyone else here pick up a touch of resentment here and there when it came to Neil?

I know what you mean, but it came across less as resentment and more the gentle frustration of getting older, and things no longer being quite the same as they used to.

Geddy came across as really being saddened to be coming nearer the end of this part of his career, and of course with Neil being ready to settle down now, it must be hard if for him as he still wants to give so much more! That's how I read it, and that makes me so pleased to think that Neil is possibly doing this tour as much for his two buddies as he is his fans.

This is the way I took the interview. You know it's got to be sad for them to be coming to the end of their touring days, no matter how hard it is on them now. They're in show business and to get out and put on a show at their age and the type of music they play has got to be exhausting, no matter what kind of shape they are physically. I'm still surprised that Neil gets out there and puts on that kind of show at his age.

Not at all. Geddy said in this very interview:

"But in the end we decided that we would do a tour, and Neil was fine with that. Once he made that decision, he was one hundred percent there. There's one thing I want to make very clear. There is no bad guy in this scenario."

IMO, Geddy is being a total professional about the status of the band and their touring decisions. It seems to me that they respect each other so much - as professionals and as friends - that once a decision is made, there is no lingering resentment or doubt.

Reading them talking about Neil, I had a little "WTF?" moment... RARELY have we heard Alex and/or Geddy being so upfront about him (They don't really know themselves what's going through his mind, they never see him outisde of Rush, etc....).... I must admit I was in the "Bad Neil" crowd before the tour started... But when I saw his "New Old Kit", the first thing I took from it is that Neil has suddenly loosened up.... He got out of his comfort zone of the last 20 years on drums, which is not a bad thing.... Maybe he might rediscover joy in drumming... Alex hinted as much when Neil apparently said "Hey! I Can't still beat the #### out of those drums!"... It also confirmed what I said about Geddy... He is NOWHERE near ready to stop.... The final thought on this interview is that Alex seems a bit lost and mixed up right now... He seems pretty burned out.... A rest will do him good... I don't hink he's ready to call it quits, but it's evident he needs a break... And I think the fact that Geddy has been so top shape on bass this tour, and that Alex has been struggling (As per our observations on Periscope AND Geddy's comments about it being tough to see Alex struggle that much at rehearsals) might be adding to Big Al's anxiety on stage this tour... He just doesn't seem his normal self... And I haven't seen him inteact with Geddy as much on this tour... Something's up.....

And YES, Geddy has a Grandson... I read or heard him say the "HE is the cutest thing ever!"

I kind of wonder if someof the struggling might partly be due to the amount of different songs they're doing, and all the instrument changes.

After the Clockwork Angels Tour, they took the next 18 months off. Break time is over......

I thought the piece was a very candid look at the band. I don't sense any resentment among the three guys from reading the article--just that they are at different mental and physical places with respect to the desire or ability to carry on with future tours. Perhaps I didn't follow enough pre-tour news but I was surprised to hear that Alex sort of had to be talked into the tour also....but it makes total sense now that I heard has has the arthritis. Sh*&, I get tired from a 2-3 business trip on the road so I can't immagine doing it and playing for 3 hours every other night for 3-4 months. While the fan adulation and joy of playing so well on an instrument must be cool, the grind of city to city, hotel to hotel, etc must be really tough--and multiply that exponentially with arthitis and tendinitis. I am very surprised there is even an inkling of a possible Europe set of gigs....if anything, my bet would have been a very outside shot of a second North American leg of R40. As far as I have read, the shows have garnered much better attandance than I can remember on the last few tours. Only time will tell--but I would see them now if you can get to a show or multiple shows....this might be it.

Yes, Hemispheres. They were also amazing on the PeW tour. For me, the beginning of their decline started with the MP tour.

That's where I was prior to Periscope. I've seen four shows that way now, and I realize how solid this particular tour is, and what seeing RUSH again with friends will mean to me in the long haul.

I'm telling you, they lost their mojo when Alex cut his hair. :)

Specifically in Alex's case...psoriatic arthritis is no joke, especially when it comes to the swelling of the fingers and in particular the fingertips. For a guy with huge hands to begin with, I really feel for him and appreciate him giving what he's got up there.
