I feel they should only use strings for songs that have strings already on them. Leave the other songs in tact.

If they do this, then I'd be 100% behind it.

Completely with you on this.

Agreed. My biggest concern is that once they start preparing to work with the string section they'll over-do it and start using it on more and more tracks.

I truly feel its the only way it would pass by us RUSH-fans. If it has strings, by all means add strings...IF not Leave that Thing alone!

I think people should give it a chance - I bet it will sound really cool! yes.gif

And besides, they've been playing with strings since the very beginning - they were just on their guitars and basses. wink.gif

Somebody released an album of RUSH songs that was strictly played by a string section.....Incredible stuff! I have it but cannot find it at this moment....Xanadu was the best song from this record....Now I want to find it.....

I think they are going to blow this thing up! If they keep it low then fine but I am there to hear the THREE not more...I do not want to be distracted and the strings section could do that if they let it...

Old classics I want to hear with the live string section:

Losing It
Manhattan Project
Marathon

Of course, The Garden has to be the main force justifying the strings.

You know, I wouldn't actually mind Tears either. To be honest, I love that song. It's such a beautiful song.

Tears used a Mellotron. The first live string section was on Manhattan Project. Losing It would be great to hear live. I would tend to doubt that one, but who knows? Any one of many songs could get this treatment.

That was the Vitamin String Quartet and they only did 2112, I think.

IMO, as much as I love orchestrated stuff, it would not give Xanadu justice.

Oh my gosh. If I heard Manhattan Project live with strings, that'd be amazing. My dad and I are massive fans of that song.

Hmmm...I guess I'm in the minority on this topic. I think adding the strings to some older songs could be great. Think about it, we're all for the most part sick of some of the same songs that we know they will be playing, like Tom Sawyer. This could give those songs a much needed spicing up. I'm not saying every song, but I think strings on Tom Sawyer at least would be interesting.

Also, maybe just to use as a fake intro, say on TSOR, strings playing that intro riff at a slower tempo for a while, then cut out and Alex rips it at full speed to kick it off.

Point is, I'm sure Rush will be creative with it and not make any songs cheesy because of it.

Yeah, and most of the songs are a pretty close match the Exit . . . Stage Left versions. So, you sing along and airdrum like it's an orchestral karaoke when you're driving down the road.

Of all of the Rush concert standards, Tom Sawyer is the one song I will never tire of hearing live (also Subdivisions) and the one song I would not want strings on.

For me, Tom Sawyer is baseline Rush, the essence of Rush. Hearing it live kind of resets everything, making all well in the Universe for me. It is sort of like the ritual part of a Rush show that everyone is 100% connected by.

Subdivisions is similar for me but in a more personal way. It brings me back to when I first really connected with Rush music and I imagine it's the same for a lot of other people.

In fact, I imagine this is precisely why there are a handful of core songs that they stick to with all tours: almost as a sign of respect to fans.

Their regular reintroduction of old deep cuts is another sign of respect for their fans as well.

I also think that most fans probably give the benefit of the doubt to Rush for trying new things like string arrangements and wait to see how well they work but are also their toughest critics when it doesn't work.
