go2wrk@95974
In 86, I saw RUSH 2 nights in a row in Irvine, Ca. Man, it was f'n AWESOME!!!! They just ROCKED! The opening act was, I believe ,The Fabulous Thunderbirds. They were a decent band, and played a really good set.

mandydog
Best opening band for me was Toto at my first ever Rush show. They were great because they only played 4 songs and then got the hell out of the way for RUSH!!

Did the guitarist loose his only pick?? or....did the drummer toss up the sticks to the atmosphere/heavens/ozone layer, and they FAILED to return?? Underline the word FAILED?? or...They were booooed off the stage? Which one was it?? My guess? the 2nd or last one!! JK! Never heard of a band playing only 4 songs...that's a frickin' fluke. Toto only had their first album out. It was a one-off opening slot. They played "I'll Supply the Love", two songs no one had heard and "Hold The Line". Marillion Sucked! they were pretty much Booed off the stage in Chicago, everyone was cheering "Rush, Rush, Rush" during there set. Someone lit a flame with an aerosal can , It was Great. Power Windows, still my favorite Rush concert. I can verify this. They were a steaming pile of fecal matter. I recall the lead singer in a Kimono saying "I"m so wasted" or somethign like that. He sang that as they are lyrics from a song on misplaced childhood. Idiot. As far as best support act seen-Max Webster at Manchester Apollo 79. Would have loved to see Marillion open for them tho! I agree. What a stupid, ill-informed comment. He's a dope. Misplaced Childhood is an album that still cannot get knocked off it's perch.

Shredder2
Rush walking onto the stage seems like a great opening act, right? The show doesn't start until the first note is played... by Rush.

JohnnyBlaze
QUOTE (Ancient Ways @ Jun 22 2012, 09:16 AM) Jon Butcher Axis Saw them open during the New World Tour...which made them THE very first band I've ever seen play. The audience didn't like them very much so they pelted the band with beach balls and frisbees. I felt sorry for them especially since I didn't think they were that bad at all. robertrobyn
QUOTE (CrimsonE @ Jun 18 2012, 01:55 PM) This question is obviously 15 years out of date, but what the hell. Back when Rush did have opening acts, which one was your favorite? Primus was pretty cool for the CP show, but the one I enjoyed the most was Mr. Big, who opened the Presto and the summer gigs for RtB. One band I thought would be cool to open for them in 1990 was a quasi-supergroup called Bad English, which had John Waite, Neil Schon and Jonathan Cain. Unfortunately, that never happened Im a little partial to Primus since I know Larry the guitar player.
Jaminbenb
QUOTE (losingit2k @ Jun 18 2012, 04:36 PM) Tommy Shaw during HYF, He was simply on fire! Saw him in Philly....they booed him during his solo stuff and cheered like crazy during his Styx stuff...it was a pretty decent opening act. Saw Y&T open on the GuP tour, they weren't too bad. The only detraction was their lead singer kept yelling "ROCK AND F***ING ROLL!!!" in between songs...not very classy at a Rush show. No opening act when I saw them on the Power Windows tour..the rest of the times I saw them it was "An Evening With...."

DonsHorse
Max Webster was perfect for them. They were also a Canadian band and they were fun to watch. I always appreciate a good opening band to set the tone for the show and get you hungry for the main attraction.

They did Working Man intro with Geddy singing off stage Mr. Big was ok... MSG was terrible. I felt bad for them. Must have been an off night, Schenker is usually good. softfilter
Can't really remember Rush opening acts or even some of those early Rush concerts from the early 80's altogether, just fragments here and there. But do remember FM with Ben Mink on his electric violin second night at Richfield Coliseum Moving Pictures tour May 8th 1981 were pretty good..... And Primus CP tour at Richfield I thought were good( Although for some reason Rush had a rare off night they seemed tired and not very enthusiastic, but the crowd was..) Mostly not many really stood out for me to remember at all, didn't pay much attention just wanted the opener to get it done with and get off stage.
