Poll is incomplete.

It's not epic because Rush has much better songs. To be epic (to me) it would have to be in the top 1% of songs in my library.

It's not AN epic because it isn't a hero's story song.

It is, however, a very good song by a band still creating great music.

To the detractors:

HF is AN epic- the storyline however is not explicitly given in the lyrics. Instead, the bombastic music and refrain should invoke the epic nature of your own life experiences.  If you are having difficulty filling in the blanks with regards to personal epic experiences, that is a different problem all together and not the fault of the song itself.

Sorry...but that doesn't make much sense to me.

Why can't everyone that state that it's a kick ass song that rocks? Why does it HAVE to be given the definition of an 'Epic'??

If a song is not an 'Epic', does it then suck? I don't get it. They written a shit-load of songs over their careers that are far from epics, and yet, kick so much ass.

Freewill, Tom Sawyer, Limelight, etc. Headlong Flight is just another spoke on the wheel...it rocks, and that's all that matters!

I guess my attempt at humor was an epic fail laugh.gif

Not only is it "Epic" it is "F@cking Epic". You know The "F" word is the most epic of all the cus words, so from now on I'm replacing the "F" word with EPIC. So now "F" off will be "Epic Off" WTF will be WTE and "F" no will be "Epic No" . Do we understand each other? If not you can Epic Off you slumbering Epic, I don't Epicin care anymore. What the Epic, do you need to do to get your point across? "Headlong Flight" is Epicing Epic you Epicing Epics.

No.

Exactly.

Epic works don't work that way. If they did, I'd be able to write an epic story with two sentences:

"In the beginning, someone was born. Then, at the end, that person died."

If you can't fill in the rest with an epic story based on your life experiences, that's not the fault of the story, it's your fault for not having a good enough life. eyesre4.gif

I myself am starting to favor the death penalty for people who use that word in reference to anything other than the works of Homer, Virgil, and the Venerable Bede.

Oh it's epic, alright, it's just not an epic.

^BINGO.

I've said this in the other threads, but simply put, there isn't enough of an actual story within those 7 minutes to really constitute an epic.

This song is part of a bigger story...the CA story. But the song itself is nothing more than a chapter really.

An epic to me, tells a story from start to finish, which HF does not. But again, the song itself kicks ass. 1022.gif

This.

Also, it's just not adventurous enough with enough variety and changes and different sections in it, etc. to be AN EPIC. I have no problem with anyone thinking it's epic because of the song length or quality (even though I think it falls a bit short of that description personally), but in terms of it being AN epic. no.gif

Exactly, while it may be a part of a larger story. On it's own there is none. Therefore it is epic, but not an epic.

If however, the CA suite does in fact form a coherent story, then I believe that it would likely be called a concept album.

I think 7 minutes is too short for an epic. To me, if something is 10 minutes or longer, then it's an epic. Everything else is just an extended piece wink.gif

That being said, the song itself is pretty damn epic. 1022.gif

Here's the question I always ask. If the song has some sort of over-the-topness to it. Weather it's instrumentation or lyrics, does it evoke that ridiculous over-the-top feeling. If it does, then it's an epic in my book.

Headlong Flight is over-the-top henceforth its EPIC!

Amen! To me an Epic was a longer song that shows what the band was all about, in this case, there unmatched musicianship.

I don't even think an epic song has to be exceptionally long, but it has to tell a story or have some sort of time element. I don't consider HL to be "epic".

good song - yes

good musicianship - yes

long enough - yes

epic - no
